Hey egghead, stop lying to UC students. Thanks to you and your Regent idiots, I cannot get into a single politics or science class. Thank you for opening my eyes and allowing me to get involved in politics. Maybe we could fix this situation if we sent you idiots to prison and let the prisoners get an education.
Current Threats to University of California Dont Come From the Outside - $3 Million Extravagant Spending by UC President Yudof for University of California Berkeley Chancellor Birgeneau to Hire Consultants - When Work Can Be Done Internally & Impartially
During the days of the Great Recession, every dollar in higher education counts.
remember how just a few months ago, UCSF and another UC hired new chancellors? Remember how the the people at the top decided to offer those new chancellors increased salaries from what the previous chancellors were being paid (at those respective schools)? that was in the summer of 2009. HOW ABOUT RETHINKING STUPID STUFF LIKE THAT?!
There ain't any jobs in California. Its so dam hard to get a minimum wage down here its pathetic. Reinvesting in the educational system in California is pathetic as well b/c there ain't jack solutions to it. Just more spending and mad dough for these institutions (like the UC's) that cling to student's money and zero opportunities after you graduate.
The primary reason that we spend so much on prisons is because we send far too many people to jail for minor infractions. It increases the likelihood that they return to crime and costs California more than if they were put in a University instead. I know drug offenders that could have been thrown in prison, but instead are now productive tax paying citizens instead because they were not thrown in prison.
Pathetic. Stop whining about money. Raise tuition or cut spending - join the world in which the rest of us live.
California has the highest state taxes in the nation. We just had the largest tax increase in the history of the nation. In LA, our sales tax has increased from 8.25% to 10.25%.
STOP STEALING MY MONEY. I have a family to feed and a retirement for which to save.
Oh really... pathetic? Sounds like you left college before the budget crisis and now that you have yours, you couldn't care less about others after you. And you're concerned about feeding your family? Try feeding your family AND sending your kids to college. Raise tuition and cut back spending? Good one, alumni.
Here's an idea... instead of each prison having their own guards waiting for a riot, why not have fewer geographic emergency centers where officers can be flown in by helicopter at a moment's notice.
Unfortunately, Schwarzenegger's solution for providing money for higher ed is to privatize the prisons. This results in sub-standard conditions for prisoners. This is not an accepable tradoff.
Yudoff is an idiot! During these hard times they penalize the faculty, staff and students by reaching into their already strained pockets for "Bailout money." At the same time he lent California 200 million and gave the top UC executives huge raises and bonuses. He is no better than the CEOs of the banking industry! Impeach his A**!
UC raised $199.8 million through sale of short-term commercial paper and purchased a state bond, enabling the state to resume funding of the voter-approved projects.
In March, Regents approved more restrictions on bonuses and incentive pay, on top of the senior-level salary freeze and bonus restrictions adopted in January.
For every federal dollar Californians send to Washington, we only get back 78 cents. Other states get back more than they put in, for example, New Mexico gets $2.00. Maine students get free laptops. This extra 22 cents could ease a lot of our problems.
What's with the busy hands? I'm guessing he's not much of a public speaker or doesn't have a coach. If you fast forward it, its sorta a cool music video.
I have an AS from a CCC, a BS and graduate degree from UC; work/ed for UC (with mandatory furloughs) in a variety of positions; and currently have kids at UC and CSU (with fee raises this year.)
For those of you who think UC is spending "most of UC's money on the elite," that new funds will "increase the number of administrators" or be used on activities which are not mission central in some way, or that there is no "financial transparency," stop listening to shallow sound bites and get real.
To Mr. Yudof: I think you may be underestimating the effect that the student strikes had on Schwartzenegger's decision. I am a UCLA staff member who was already underpaid when I got hit with the furloughs this year. I took heart in the idea that if I took a hit it would keep tuition from having to go up. Well, they went up anyway-- the biggest increase in the history of the university. Please Mr. Yudof, thank your students for making this budget crisis national news by lowering their fees.
Why don't we quit paying inflated salaries to the office of the president, and Yudof's $10,000 monthly rent for his humble abode in oakland? The answer to maintaining the UC's reputation is hiring better professors, spending more money on research, and providing students with a good education. I don't see how cutting campus services, increasing tuition, and laying off professors is going to help.
His $10,000 compensation isnt the root of the problem. What would getting rid of that do? Make my fees 1 cent lower? California voters need to stop voting for tax reductions, it's making everything worse (and not just UC, our roads are bad now too). If people didnt complain about paying taxes we would be much better off.
One problem is that this legislation does nothing to deal with how universities spend the money they get from the state. It is possible that the universities would use the new funds to simply increase the number of administrators. Without tying funding to fiscal accountability measures, new money may just be funneled into old priorities, and the UC has shown that it has no problem using increased funding to support activities unrelated to the universitys core mission.
That's a bit cynical. It's not really Yudof's fault. It's all about tax money. I'm okay with taxing individuals that make more than a quarter million. They deserve their salary but it wouldn't be without the people "below" them. They should help out and give some back. We're all in this together.
The legislature shouldn't just hand over more money. It should come with accountability measures that prevent UC administrators from continuing to spend most of UC's money on the elite. I'd post a link to more info if youtube allowed it...
More money for Universities and less for prisons? What a novel idea. Why are we spending 12k/year on average more per inmate than per child in our public school systems in California anyway? Do we really have our heads screwed on that far backwards?
This is a bit hopeful, for the first time in a while. But what is not addressed here is that the fundamental problem with UC and UC budgets is the dysfunctionality of the Legislature and CA politics. Without fundamental reform of these (including removing the 60%+ majority needed for a budget which gives the Neanderthal "no taxes; cut crucial services instead" faction veto power), all fixes for UC are band-aids but not real solutions.
ummm... why so much gesticulating? does it enhance your legitimacy?

They tell us to go onto YouTube in order to watch the video, but then again they don't allow UCSD computers to onto YouTube (blocked).
That figures!! Maybe they should spend some money on someone with a brain. Joe M.
