Alot of people don't like Abe because he was the leader of the Union Army and the south wanted things to stay the same, i.e. slavery. Read Lincoln's 2nd inaugral address. It pretty concisely explains why the war was inevitable and why so much blood on both sides had had to be shed. I think he came to this reasoning only very slowly--after trying to be pragmatic about slaver.y. Lincoln seems to have grasped a conviction that God would not allow the war to end until slavery was ended in the US. Lincoln tabled the Emancipation Act to his cabinet and said "I want no discussion of this. I have made a promise to my creator."

@hungarygator The founders were cowards and hypocrites, they cried convincingly enough for "Freedom" while they themselves had slaves, NONE Of them had the courage to end the peculiar institution as Jefferson called it, (what I find more peculiar is how a man who slept with his 15 year old slave like Jefferson did is so admired) But beside the point, lincoln had the courage and wherewithal to do what the founding fathers didn't and left to future generations, millions were freed by his courage

@nappyweed111 Firstly there is no proof that Jefferson slept with Sally Hemmings as you claim. Secondly, Lincoln was hardly "courageous" in ending slavery. He did so as a cynical war measure - nothing more. He was a flaming racist himself and wanted to deport all blacks which he said publicly and repeatedly.

What the US should have done is implement a compensated emancipation scheme like everybody else did...but the northern states opposed that-they didn't want to pay.
