Actually i love the tau. Its my favorite race just because they have that more "noble" attitude and they are more calm. In addition to most other races that are fanatics over smth and barbarians when it comes to war

In a sense you can take it that those gods that they took part as a link to, willed their mass suicide to save their souls from being eaten after death instead of reincarnating again as many, to ensure their survival as one superior being.

Actually, it does with the Imperium. Don't look for Imperial Tech advancement, it comes once every hundred years if you're lucky. The Eldar, Orks, and Necrons don't advance much either. The only race that it doesn't fit is the Tau, but since when has the Tau ever fit into W40K?
@ImperatorDominatus I've never understood how the Tau didn't fit, maybe because I'm very new the universe? They are a counter-part to the utter survivalist tendencies of the other "orderly" races in their desire to integrate other species for "The Greater Good" , like communism, and it could be their downfall, like how loyalist humans did in Dark Crusade. And their tech is advanced because they develop it freely, but it's no means perfect, and the Imperium still has its numbers and Space Marines

Their technology is polished in itself, but fact is the Imperium once had far greater tech, and some of it is still seen and can dominate the Tau.. the only reason the Imperium hasn't wiped them out was luck, the arrival of a Hive Fleet? without him then the ships cant travel through the warp and conquer more worlds
the emperor is seen as the most important person in the imperial, as a god though he doesnt want to be known as a god
if the emperor dies, then the space marines loses hope and chaos will seep to every man in the imperial, even the most loyal ones
thats why the emperor sits on the throne, to control the warp, prevent chaos

Ah, The lines in the video were from the little "prologue" that comes along with every Black Library Novel. However, I do agree that the "by the will of the gods" bit was a rather poor choice of words.

I don't know where that came from, but I'm guessing the Witch Hunters Codex.

The quote is in many books but i know for certain it is in "The KIlling Ground" by Graham McNeil and it is probably in the Witch Hunters and Deamon Hunters Codexes. Any other questions about the imperium ill see if i can help just ask
