It's not actually the background. The brain is the one telling you how you should see them in contrast to the background. A software for image detection would have no problem in realizing that the cilinder figures are identical. A human brain would have problems.

its based on contrast, the difference between light and value of an image or object. place something on a gradient, no matter what the object is, its always going to look darker on the lighter side of the gradient. its better when u have the some of one object to display on a gradient like this example
