  • How nice to see and hear news as it was meant to be- not like the stand up comedians we have as anchorpersons today who are a disgrace to their profession

  • Wow... the way reporters and anchors read/spoke the news to the audience back then was so different... very straight-forward... very formal... perhaps even a little stiff-sounding at times. Nowadays, it's so... well... different.

  • Was this really live? There's no kinescope. It was on videotape.

  • 4:00 Did that GOP leader just get out of the bar?

  • Notice how much substance in this report compared to the garbage all the local stations spew these days... what a shame.

If a real unbiased local news station were to fire up today they would capture 90% of the market. Yes thats how bad it is in 2011, after watching the news the only thing I've learned is the weather, which has turned into 50% of the entire broadcast... pathetic!

    Greetings from California!

  • @1Guitarslayer ...I would agree with that..

  • I want to see Grimsby actually anchoring the News at KGO-TV in San Francisco. I noticed Grimsby coined the Happy Talk Format of ABC O&O's like KGO and WABC as Kickers Guts and Orgasms standing for his criticism of KGO's Management before Van Amburg took over his San Francisco Spot. and ABC moved Grimsby to WABC. By the way who did Grimsby replace at WABC when he got there?

  • @recto89 - Believe it or not, his future "Eyewitness News" co-anchor Bill Beutel. In his first year at WABC, Grimsby only anchored the 11 P.M. newscast (John Schubeck handled the early-evening news report, through April 1969). And prior to Beutel being returned to co-anchor with Grimsby, the latter's prior co-anchor was Tom Dunn (no relation to Bob).

  • @wmbrown6 You mean John Schubeck in LA that roger replaced?

  • @recto89 - Schubeck was at WABC from 1967 to '71; in his last two years there, he was drama critic (replacing ABC staff announcer Allan Jefferys in that capacity). Schubeck then went to sister station KABC in L.A. where he remained to 1974 when he rejoined KNBC where he stayed until '83 (I say "rejoined" because he'd been at KNBC before, from 1965 to '67).

  • @wmbrown6 Wow I had no idea Schubeck time at WABC was a lot like Don Sanchez on KGO. Anchors who became Movie and drama critics

  • Wow I had no idea Schubeck had 2 stints at KNBC like Paul Moyer did along with with KABC in the middle of their careers. Its like Pete Wilson working 2 stints at KGO and Wendy Tokuda working 2 stints at KPIX but with KRon in the middle of their careers and both leaving KRON due to station mismanagement.

  • No faking these great old broadcasts thanks!

  • Bob Dunn? pre happy talk. Lester Mattux...evil.

  • yep its still a bet boring news lol

  • I like the music for the News Theme Song.

  • Old local newscasts have always fascinated me. Thanks for adding these.

  • Yea, well I grew up in Oakland also. High School grad in '66. Draft age for me was a reality in '68. Finally got the call in '69. What with Vietnam, all the peaceniks, anti war protests etc. it was a tad fouled up!! Not a whole lot of good news on the TV back then, or in newspapers.

  • These are awesome! Do you have anymore from the 60s?

  • Remarkable!

  • It's really sad that there's no real news reporting today like they had years ago. All we have today is celebrity stories, junk news and liberal propaganda.

  • @kataisa3 Gee, if Lester Maddox were alive today, I wonder what political party (and movement) he would belong to. . .

    Hmm. . . .

  • @rayjr62 prolly the same one he belonged to when he was alive: the Democratic Party

  • Was Peter Jennings already in his first stint as ABC's evening news anchor??

If so, the report he did from Atlanta might have also aired on his newscast (which might have originated from there that night), and his going to Atlanta might have been partly to promote his new status as anchorman.

  • Political arguing aside, this was very, very nice to see vintage videotape from one of ABC's flagship stations and the one serving my hometown (Oakland). My mom graduated from high school in Oakland in 1965 and I came along almost five years later. This is the station my family watched before and after I was born, and Channels 7 and 5 (CBS) were the main go-to stations for news when I was a kid.

  • When persons are suffering from irreparable psychosis, it is unhealthy to allow one's self to engage in their pathological sagacity. This is for the benefit of my "Liberal" compatriots.

  • all liars as we now know same with iraq and afganistan,,,,,,,,,do we have to wait another 30 years too know the truth???

  • some 5 minutes into the video, there is a commercial about Chevrolet cars that features one suited guy and some typewriters with absolutely no cars!!!

  • peter jennings reporting at 8:48

  • The days of innocence, jeez. But also the day USA was still free and strong. Now, Obama ruined it :(

  • @jargainjones Don't blame Obama for ruining anything. It's the American people who must be blamed. That includes you. Americans boast about freedom but Americans abuse it so America will loose it.

  • @sheltv100 Not really. Every superpower rises and falls. Obama just wants us to fall faster.

  • @jargainjones That's not true. Obama is just elected president. Obama does not even run the USA, and neither do the people. The USA is run by millionares and billionares who own big buisness, and are exempt from the IRS. It's these rich guys that run the USA to tell the government their interests and formulate policies to suit their needs and not the needs of the people. And most American people are way too blind to see this truth. That is what is causing the USA to fall.

  • @sheltv100 Shell I have watched countless vids on that kinda stuff. Nobody knows the truth, but we do know just one thing. No other president until now has done as much damage to one country in such a short amount of time. The billionaires, if they were running our country seem like they go a nice slow steady speed (if the conspiracy is true). Unfortunately, what Obama and his retard administration has done exceeds all of our thoughts and expectations of how a socialistic country is formed.

  • @jargainjones Nobody in America knows the truth because most Americans do not read for themselves. They just follow what others say and most don't even think for themselves. The truth is, America is going from Freedom to Facism.

In 1967 Martin Luther King once said, that if American does not change her ways, God will rise up and break the backbone of America's power and pass it on to someone else. Guess what? That is happening now, so don't just blame Obama for it. China is rising.

  • @sheltv100 You don't have to tell me Shell. I work from home, and have Fox and CNN streaming all day long. I get more news and information in a day than most people do in a couple weeks. Only reason, again, is because I am able to, given I work from home. I see exactly where the Country is heading, however we could turn it around. The teaparty forces are in full effect, and they are doing a pretty good job (just check the latest primary's)

  • @jargainjones The tea party movement can't do nothing to turn it around, they don't know that they can never run the country, only rich white billionares run and own the USA, not Obama, and not the citizens.

And besides FOX news is nothing but a total propaganda machine. I would rather watch BBC world because they give news in a subjective manner than the objective manner used in America.

  • @sheltv100 I believe you have fox confused with CNN. Sorry.

  • @jargainjones I know the difference between the two and I am not even an American. CNN is liberal and FOX is right wing fascist. CNN is known for it's pro-American propaganda, but in a liberal way. The CNN I get here in Asia is more international. But no news agency can give subjective, and international news with good professionalism other than BBC World or Al-Gazeera English.

  • @sheltv100 Fox is the only one who lives up to their name of fair and balanced. Most liberals will refuse to come on Fox to discuss the matter at hand, however, every last conservative / repub /libertarian / etc will go on CNN for any interview. Fox gives the news and lets you decide, whereas CNN and nearly every other major news outlet including the ones you mentioned, are partisan to issues and make it known. Good day.

  • @jargainjones FOX news is the worst news agency ever to exist. They don't have professionalism in their journalism. FOX news is incapable of feeding the intelligent mind. They have invited liberals on their new shows and they try to impose right wing propaganda on liberals. You would never see that on BBC or Al-Gazeera English because they feed the intelligent mind. FOX news on the other hand is made for an audience of children trapped in adults bodies. (Thanks to America's bad education system)

  • @sheltv100 On the contrary. FOX is very capable of everything you said it was incapable of. It surpassed CNN in 2002 because of this. Just think about it, you had CNN running the media. It was just CNN, until FOX came around circa 95. In 7 short years, it surpassed CNN rating to become #1. What it did is woke people up from their unintelligent, imbecilic slumber; the very slumber from which you lay now. Everybody has a chance to awaken, your time will come too if you allow it.

  • @jargainjones That was 2002, We are in 2010. I doubt that FOX news is number 1 in the world right now. In fact most people around the world do not even watch FOX news because FOX news is total right wing American propaganda telling lies about the world and also Americans lying about themselves. Besides, have you ever traveled outside of America before? I've been to 17 different countries, how about you?

  • @sheltv100 Shelltv it is number 1, that is what I am trying to explain to you. I know it is hard to take in, but it has been number 1 since 2002.. Let me write that one more time just to ascertain that it is cemented in your noggin. Since 2002, FOX has been the #1 most watched news channel by a long shot; by huge numbers. Now that you are a little bit better educated, perhaps you can go back and rethink your flawed agenda?

  • @jargainjones I have no flawed agenda. You think that just because I do not accept the typical American thinking that I have a flawed agenda. The problem is FOX news does not reflect the views of the global community. If you express opinions that people like Bill O'Reily or that bitch Michelle Malkin disagrees with, they like other typical Americans will impose their views on you like as if you have no freedom of expression. FOX news is not subjective, that is why I will never support FOX news.

  • @sheltv100 No you are wrong, lol. It is not the O'reilly's and Sean Hannity's and Glen Becks that push anything on you. It is the liberals that do. If you ever try to argue with a liberal, even if you show them facts, they will tell you that you are wrong and they are right. Nobody on FOX does that. On FOX they request that you prove them wrong, if they are wrong. You see, the major difference between FOX and every other news outlet is FOX is actually fair, and admit if they are wrong.

  • @jargainjones You say that liberal news stations push their ideologies on viewers. Sure. You also say that FOX News reporting is fair and balanced. Definitely not. Unfortunately, most American networks don't offer objectivity. All of the major networks including FOX are under enormous pressure and influence from the political realm. A VP at FOX is guilty of handing down internal memos to newscasters to push a right wing agenda. So please, don't ignore that FOX does have a conservative bias.

  • @jargainjones So you support a news agency with a right-wing agenda that supports neo-cons with their racial stereotypes about black people and stereotypes about muslims. OK then, suppose I tell you that the apartheid that used to exist in South Africa was inspired by the USA Jim Crow laws. Or that some slave ships were owned by Jewish buisnessmen, or that Iraqi women were raped in the war in Iraq by US soldiers?

  • @sheltv100 If you want to discuss other countries politics, we can do that here or somewhere else. While you curtail the truth, I will keep bringing it to you until you face it, and question it, and then in turn become one with it. Remember this. Liberals argue everything, even fact with their very own opinion. If I were to tell a liberal the sky is blue, they would argue it is not. They don't care who is right or wrong, just as long as they get the last word in. Don't become a liberal.

  • @jargainjones You have no damn right telling me not to be a liberal. I have every right to be a liberal all I want. I have my reasons to be a liberal. (A political liberal that is). One is because I am black, I'm not rich, and I am open minded. You have no right telling me what you want me to be. I am not afraid to be what I want to be, it's my damn right to think how I want to think as long as it is critical and open minded. If you ask me American conservatives are the most closed minded people

  • @sheltv100 There are a lot of smart black folks who would agree with 100% of what I am saying. Just because you are black and not rich doesn't mean you have to follow the liberal mindset. If you truly wanted to make your own path, you would simply be a free thinker (which ranges on conservatism) and live life, rather than following another groups ideologies. It is like religion. Why do I have to follow a religion? Why not just believe in God. Think about it.

  • @jargainjones OK, I agree that being a free thinker is cool, but I don't see anything liberal or conservative about that. And yes I believe in God. I have a right to my own religious beliefs and political beliefs (they both must remain separate). So to each his own and let it be that way.

  • Great tape...! Wonder if any WABC-TV newscasts from the 60's

    are out there....

  • @noahf67 Or any other ABC O&O's in the 1960's I would love to see Grimsby anchoring the KGO News before we went to NYC on WABC7

  • @recto89 How about some of those announcer-n-slide

newscasts that opened the day on WABC-7 back in the

early 1970s....? Would love to see one or two of them again.

There must be some tape of them lying around..

  • Good one

  • Wow, Everett Dirksen looked like an old drunken fool who had just gotten out of bed.

What am I saying? They all look like that nowadays! :-)

  • It was Diem JFK had overthrown, not Thieu.

  • We lost the confidence of the South Vietnmaese when JFK ordered the overthrow of Theiu.

  • Watching these propagandists spread their disinformation reminds me how much I despise being lied to.

  • big ears...

  • You got that right. I can't remember a single good thing he did for Georgia

  • Bob Dunn was later at KNXT for many years... there had been a clip posted of the intro to a 1976 (?) newscast that had a split second of him at the end.

So was that electronic sign outside KGO's building (seen in the opening slide) actually used as a news "zipper" a la Times Square?

By 1965 standards, this is a well-polished newscast, even if it is mostly rehash from the previous night's network news. The clip of the McNamara news conference is the only part that really begins to drag on

  • Where was Grimsby at in 1965. I thought Grimsby was supposed to be the Main Anchor at KGO at this time. Did grimsby have the Day off in this clip?

  • @dinfg6 This was a morning newscast.

  • So Grimsby was the evening anchor at this time? How Come Bob Dunn Said that "Travis Air Force Base is North of San Francisco" at 2:12. Nowadays Fairfield is counted as the Bay Area in some cases.

  • I've heard of the Vietnamese, but who are the Vietnam-Ease?

  • the graphics are sick

  • Wow Wasn't Roger Grimsby here on KGO in 1965 before he went to WABC in 1968. Also I Never knew this is an early use of the ABC7 Logo.

  • That particular design dates as far back as when the familiar ABC logo made its debut back in '62.

  • @recto89 Every other ABC station is Channel 7.

  • This is great. Post more if you have it!

  • Ah...my birth year.

  • Nothing happened in San Francisco that morning?

  • How did you find this old treasure after 40 some odd years?

  • a friend sent it along a few years back

  • @dgendvil Make that 45 years.
