They're putting more time into Torchlight and making at a better game. It's not a game I'm interested in but I hope that more developers start a trend of releasing games when they're actually done instead of the bullshit we have now.
I think that games these days are insanely overpriced. Paying $70 for a game just seems a bit much for most games. Unless the title is amazing, I find it to be a rip off. I'm very selective when it comes to the new games I buy, but look at games like "Halo: Combat Anniversary" or "The Cursed Crusade". They are for consoles and brand new are only $40...WITH DLC.
I think the DLC is fine, and if you don't wanna pay full price...you still get the full game but no extras, at least you save a lot.
SOPA is absolutely ridiculous. That you americans even let it come this far speaks volumes about how corroded and undermined your government has become. If stuff like this ever comes up here in germany and makes it past constitutional court I'll be leaving here instantly.
SOPa isn't just about copyright. It's about lobby-controlled governments effectively taking away your freedom and free speech.
I believe that personal game sale over websites like ebay or craigslist are amazing, but GameStop is, as you said, making a KILLING off used game sales. With personal sale, the seller gets more money than he/she would have gotten from GameStop, and the buyer pays LESS than what they would have paid for the used game at GameStop. Everybody wins. I digress...
As far as this launch DLC goes...Its a load of crap. People have the right to sell their belongings, full gaming experience. The end.
@Stewiethebig The DLC is a free bonus. They are giving you added content that other people have to pay for. "It's my property" is fine, but it is a free bonus. They never said you can't resell, because you paid for it. But added bonus wasn't paid for. The people who think it's crap cause they want more for less are the same ones pirating software. If you want it, pay for it. The people who buy the games used are too cheap to pay for the full experience so they should GET WHAT THEY PAY FOR!
@BigJL5288 You make a good point, but those who are too cheap? Not everyone can afford 60-70 dollars for the brand new game, and I would be okay if there was some method to pay the developers directly for the DLC, just so that everyone could have this DLC. Doesn't seem like too much to ask for.
And as for pirates, efforts to stop piracy have always been at the expense of loyal customers. I do agree that piracy is a problem, but we need better ways to deal.
No Force: New media industry has switched from the physical good and the so called "propety" to a service provider: They don't give you the music/film/game but they are giving you the opportunity to play it.
And for those that will come with the car analogy, let me say that's absolutly irrelevant: Car manufacturer sells you the set of part and the added-value of putting them together. Hence the car. However, they don't give you their intellectual propety like plans or process.
The DLC protected content is a perfect way to protect "intellectual property" to increase its value for buying directly from manufacturer and not "illegally". That is what is in the license agreement. We don't need laws or US Firewalls.
developers have already raised the price of a new game from 50$ to 60$. This is just a case of the gaming industry trying to milk more money from the market. I am in college and I do not have a steady job so I only buy used. The one time only DLC will cause me to possibly not even want to buy the game in the first place.
It's foolish to delay Torchlight II. Diablo 3 and Star Wars Old Republic will combine to slaughter Torchlight. I like the Torchlight series, but there's no way that it will compete with these two.
By "buying" software you're only buying a licensed copy of it. License-trading is an issue not exclusively affecting the software industry. Games are usually bought with license-inclusive with you - the buyer - at that point of time being anonymous. The license is valid the moment you buy the DVD. Hence once a license is unlocked aka recognized you could do whatever you want with it like resell it as you are not the explicite license owner. It is difficult to combat. So...DLCs are convenient.
I'm all for DLC at launch. It gives people who really wanted the game something extra for their money and those who didn't really want it can just get the experience they wanted (campaign, online multiplayer, etc.) without having to pay full price. Also, a lot of game companies allow you to buy that DLC code if you bought a used copy, so they still make some money back anyway. I've noticed that it's gone as far as paying for an online code just for multiplayer (Homefront).
@buto29 Piracy means that they didn't even get the initial sale (new). It also means that you probably can't sell it, so places like Game Stop miss out on the resale of a used game also.
@buto29 From the developers standpoint, a used sale means there was a new sale to begin with. I see where you're trying to go but you can't focus on just one aspect of the situation. Piracy hurts everyone, not just developers, because not only do developers get nothing for their work but they drive up prices for the rest of us so that they can still meet the profit margin they've set.
@buto29 piracy means 0 dollars and used sale means you already had sold for 60 dollars. Were you sleeping in math class? What the dude that gave you 60 dollars does with the game is no more of your business... how can people defend corporations and their right to milk people is beyond me...
I personally don't really care about DLC so this doesn't effect me, but I agree that game companies have the right to try and make more money. That's the way they choose to keep up their business. If you have a problem with the way the companies publish their games, then don't buy the game.
Launch DLC is a scam. DLC that comes out within 90 days of a launch is a scam. But we've already fed the machine. They know now if they pull this shit that we fall for it, so its only going to get worse.
If a company wants to add extra incentive to purchase the game brand new, then more power to 'em. It's not a scam, and if you think it is then there's this wonderful thing called freedom. A game company doesn't force you to deal with them. If you don't like their product or business practice, then don't deal with them. That simple.
@Soupflakez Your logic is very sound Soup and I dont disagree with you. My main point is basically we as consumers have empowered the game company's to do this regularly. They know if they dangle the worm, we are going to bite! (most people anyways.) So they see $ signs. Cant blame them, but doesn't mean I have to like it. Had we not bought into most of the BS DLC, it may not be as rampant as it is. HL2 had a good model for DLC, now everyone has spun that into easy money.
I don't mind DLC coming for new games only, because if I buy used I'm likely planning to return the game within 7 days to get my money back. What I REALLY do not like though, is when you can't play multiplayer because multiplayer is the "dlc" you're talking about. I don't mind "mint condition" bonuses for new games, but to literally screw the customer out of half of your game is retarded.
i say YAY for DCL you should get the bonus DLC if you pay the new price for it, if you but it used just like anything else you buy used you are buying 2nd hand
I think the DLC at launch is a good idea, but you should be able to buy the DLC, so in that way you can still get the game for a lower price and not miss out on anything. And since the DLC is re-bought the game company is still getting some money from it!
Imo, torchlight stands no chance vs anything blizzard, when blizzard releases something, its bug-perfect, take sc2 for example. Also, torchlight likely has a far smaller player base...
Diablo 3 is going to conqour the rpg industry for a while, mostly cause of gems, runes and gear.
I believe that the release DLC is a good thing. The used game market takes chunks of money away from the developers. Now why is this a bad thing in my eyes. It forces the companies to take less risk when developing games. This in turn leads to more sequels, and less new IP's. Games these days are evolving rather slowly in terms of concept, but sometimes you come across some gems in the indie market, like minecraft. It also makes sure new game companies have a really hard time.
its not ok that they feel like selling or buying used games its wrong, whether or not its affecting them, players can do whatever the flux they want with their games, its a pretty greedy move, but i have to admit its a good one, cuz it will increase the income, theyre being greedy but smart.
The pushback of Torchlight II is a good thing, I'd rather buy a polished game than a rushed game that is filled with bugs. I'm not even going to buy Diablo III because of how greedy Blizzard is.
@TheRealVivle At least Blizzard Isn't making a new game every year like Activision does. They are the same company with different names but I think different people run the Blizzard side of things
I'm fine with used games being sold at GameStop. Video stores like Blockbuster have sold used movies for decades. DLC limited to those who buy only new games is kind of a low blow to gamers. Those should be limited to cosmetic items only, like a special outfit or weapon skin, and a separate DLC code which offers the same bonus should at least be made available. If I sell a used pair of jeans on ebay, I don't send a percentage to Diesel. Same thing.
lol COD getting denial of service cause they didnt anticipate users. STUPID. You would think from presales and traffic history from previous CODs would have given them a clue about the volume. FAIL
There are legal issues with the DLC issue. In Canada, when I buy music or a game, I am not only buying the right to use the content, I am buying the content itself. I know this is not the case in the States, but here, it is a clear infringement on my consumer rights.
If gaming companies want to make money off of used games they better start getting some locations where they buy their games back giving a little more money for them and selling them cheaper then their rivals. If not, then deal with it. I mostly buy used games when I do buy them. (minus skyrim, that was a new one for me lol) I would think people who can wait for the used games probably don't care for some extra content.
I think the two main reasons why this will hurt TL2's sales is that it's missing Holiday sales and is too close D3 launch.
I plan on playing both D3 and TL2, but I'll be buying D3 at launch and will wait to buy TL2, maybe on a Steam deal now. Otherwise I would have played and beat TL2 before D3. People on a tight budget might only be able to buy one of them, now they have to decide D3 or TL2. Before they could have got TL2 for Christmas and D3 a couple months later (lets hope only a couple)
@coolintruddle Bought it for a friend? Doesn't count. Lost the CD? Your own fault. I've bought Diablo 2 twice, but I would definitely feel bad about downloading Diablo 3.
@WNxManiacMan lol dont care. its free to torrent, you get games before release date, no time spent waiting in line or driving to a store. did I mention its free? anytime retard
@RumbleM0NKEY Yeah it's free to torrent, just as free and illegal as it is to steal. I doubt that you don't care about the games you play. If everyone downloads there won't be any games, and if most of us downloads the games will suck because of low budgets.
@WNxManiacMan In reality, that will never happen. Big business companies will never lose. So your argument is invalid. Just keep spending your money and leave the smart downloaders alone. Thanks.
the difference between a used car and a used game is that the used game is exactly the same to a new game (even if it has scratches those are easy to fix, game stop refunds you the money if it doesn't work) a used car has its millage up, and overall is in worse standards then a new car. diablo 3 over torchlight every time.
I don't buy too many games, so I'm not impacted by this as strongly, but I would be actually okay when a developer makes it completely impossible to resell a game.
If you wanna play a game you should pay for it. If you bought a game and played it then you've got your moneys worth right there.
@LeonardLew While I think it's debatable whether the statement "you bought a game and played it = you got your money's worth right there)" is true, I think the point we're discussing is whether it's true of the developer that "you made the game and sold it = you got your compensation right there." Do developers have a "fair" claim to further dividends resulting in the continued resale of that product? Answering yes seems to also commit you to agreeing they should just charge more upfront.
I jst want to comment that (the force feed) is a great addition to your channel, but you could really use a playlist for it, couldn't even find them till I went to uploads instead of playlists.
Drop the price down to $50 even and offer the game completely as a download (they save money no printing) or have a cd key with the disk that when you enter is locked on your account and only way to play it is to have that key, so we have to shell out less for a game and only way to buy it is new
Most of the time, when you purchase a Used game that has First Owner Content, such as Dead Space 2 and Batman: Arkham City, you can purchase a code from the Xbox Live Marketplace, or Playstation Store; that gives you a code which you can then use o access the First Owner Content. I'm not positive, but it only makes sense that the money people spend on these codes very likely goes to the developers, or at least a large percentage of it. I totally agree with this, as long as you have the option.
Some of these game companies should step up the quality of their games. Perhaps stop coming out with the same game in a sequel with different maps (cough COD, assassins creed, etc.) once a year or more. If they bump the quality perhaps players wont feel the need to sell their copy so quickly and keep the game to purchase DLC that expands or improves the game.
Developers are not losing any money from resales of their game in the used game market, rather they now want a slice of the used market pie. They created a product, set a retail value, and released it for purchase. If some gamers decide that product is not worth the initial price tag and would rather wait to buy it used, that's just a reality of a supply and demand. Is adding DLC going force more people to buy a new copy of the game (instead of used) or lead more people to not buy it at all?
@casteroc DLC has never made me buy new. However, it has made me wait till the GotY Edition with all the DLC.
Publishers don't make a penny on used games. With DLC they can. They are making higher budgeted games and need to pay them off, this is how they decided to do it. Also greed is involved for some.
I'll buy a complete feeling game at launch. If DLC completes them, I won't.
I'm careful buying used now. If I see a $10 game I make sure I'm not going to pay $10 more just to play it.
I'm definitely not okay with publishers trying to make claims on games that already cost $60. On that note Gamestop can go to hell. I've bought a few games in the past and tried to sell them back the week I've gotten them and was offered way below value. Sell on craigslist! You'll make way more in the long run with only a minimal amount of effort.
@olfan92 yeah probably not a viable option, lol. craigslist > selling it to gamestop. I was selling games a few bucks under what gamestop was charging.
@haufbraus trading games to stores is the same everywhere its never worth it nomatter what store you use. if you really wanna sell games use like Ebay or such.
@olfan92 Isn't that what I've already said and my whole point? Ebay isn't a good idea either because you have to pay Paypal for the transaction. I use Craigslist to advertise my games. Not sure why you said this...
@haufbraus i use Tradera or Blocket in sweden, great sites i made a 300$ profit on my Wii i sold it on Tradera. Tradera is like the swedish ebay. its free to use and the people you sell it to puts money onto your bankaccount then you send the stuff :) works great
@haufbraus Naturally they are not going to buy back on equal value, they did that once before and wisely stopped the practice. Essentially be like renting a game new.
@1a2b3c4d5e2427 ah, you see in the modern world we dont need computers the size of dog houses :). cut the sarcasm, if thats a computer then force seems like hes living in the 1960s, or its a server, or a printer. he can get all the computing power he needs and more in a standard sized computer, theres no need to have such a mammopth in his front room
publishers and dev teams need to make money they are not trying to force you to buy a new copy, or exclude anyone from content ea has the best means to comabt this issue with the online passes if you buy it new you get it free if you buy it used you have to buy the pass for i think it 15 bucks. if i spent years of my life to making a game to then not make anything off the later sales because of used sales i would be pissed off much like they are.
He is right tho I was planning to get it this year...but next year won't be a sure buy, Darksiders II, Kingdoms of Amulur, Daiblo III and Prototype.. will make me strapped for cash as it is even at 20$
On Torchlight 2: It depends on the polishing they are doing. If it's little things to make it look better, they can always add it later. If it's major graphic bugs and the like. Then it's fine
DLC at launch? no. That gives the companies an exuse to bascailly make a watered down game and then sell the "extras" for greater profits.
Other companies already have DLC that have "use once" types of codes that register them to accounts made online. EA does this for Dragon Age and a few other games.
Im alright with DLC at launch. Game companies have to make money somehow and soo many people would rather buy a game used or online for cheaper if its available, which gives the makers of the game NO money. How is that fair for them?
@gdoggcasey Game companies have to make money somehow? How about charging 60 dollars for a freakin game?! Every used game out there was purchased at retail price once. You think Toyota should get a cut when you sell your 10 year old used Corolla? Launch DLC is BS. They're just trying to soak more money out of the gaming public.
@gdoggcasey Game companies have to make money somehow? What's the price sticker on the case represent? That's how they make their money. Releasing quality DLC extends the life of the game and makes them more money. Squashing the used game market doesn't make them money, it stops other companies (Gamestop) from making money, and, in my opinion, hurts the gaming community as a whole.
BF3's battlelog had very few problems on release despite over 10 million units sold first day. Clearly they had done their homework to make sure their system was robust and clearly that hasn't been thought through for CoD Elite.
DLC at launch... nah.. they might have problems selling their stuff compared to used games.. but as you said your self when you buy the game you are the owner no matter who you are buying it from, if the games company dont want that.. then they shouldnt sell the game to places like gamestop :o
I don't mind new copy dlc if it's cosmetic like a Xbox avatar or a gun skin, I am not ok with day release dlc where even new buyers need to buy such as fora 4 car packs
It is always good to have quality > money. After all it is about game not money. As long as they don't go bankrupt, it is always good to have game developers that will not release some half baked crap only to gain more money faster.
i think the DLC is a good idea but i dont think it will solve the problem that gamestop and other companies cause by selling games. if 20 dollars is the difference between a weapon or a map or something minor, im not really going to be looking to get that one item im missing just to pay a large, or even sometimes small higher fee to buy the game. i mean i like the idea, i get more stuff when i buy used games. woohoo! but at the same time i would like to be able to actually sell my games....!!!!!
If you buy a new 60$ game you get the game, pretty good deal and the publisher get X amount of money from the store that sold it.
If you buy a 30$ game you get the exact same thing as the guy who payed 60$ The publisher gets nothing, and the game store gets all the profits.
so yeah I'm fine with them adding DLC too the 60$ price tag they get more new copies sold, you get DLC for free, and those who want to buy it for 30$ have the extra money to spend on DLC.
I will tell you something, Just because a Lancer is gold or i get a new helmet in halo, If i dont want the game when it comes out i will not get the game until its fairly priced.
These days no where sells used PC games where I live and the same will probably start to happen with the PS3 and 360. Although there are some fairly old games out there on PC which can still be activated off-line, these are becomming rarer.
It's an obvious attempt to make more money for the games companies and stick two fingers up at independant stores which struggle as it is to survive with games being downloadable now.
I used to work in a computer games store and I think it's discusting what's happening to the used games market. On one hand it's great to have DLC but the other thing about it is that the game cannot actually be resold once it's binded to an online account. Someone else wont be able to buy that used game and then use it as they will get an error like saying "Already binded to another account" etc.
I would buy T2 so it keeps me busy untill D3 comes out and hey,it's a nice game i would spend 40% of my gaming time while 60% would go to D3 later on.But maybe many people will be disappointed from D3 2-3 months after its release and will be looking for similar games...so only time will tell .
I used to work for gamestop and I personally hated the used game racket they have going on, I much prefer the old gamestop where the shelves had new games. I am ok with the devs trying to promote new sales, its good for the industry because more money for them means more money that people will want to invest in developers for new games or to just innovate. Also even with my EBdiscount and staff discount i still only purchased 1 used game in all the games I bought there anyways.
diablo 3 is going to butt mangle this game's sales. its pretty dang tough to compete with blizzard, specially if the game looks to be essentially the same
@ForceSC2strategy I like what you are doing here with the feed force. I can tell that you put a lot of time and effort into the show. Keep it up! If I could make one suggestion it would be to have some sort of graphical transition between cuts. It's not that big of a deal...but I can tell that you want to run your show at the highest quality as possible. Keep it comming Force!!
Saying that all DLC that is released or annouced at launch is greedy is just ignorant. The certification process and the distribution leaves them with months with nothing to do. Maybe they want to crank out some more content when they're still fresh in work.
Its a case by case basis, I think everyone can tell when a company is just pulling content from the game to release seperately.
@Kilraan1701 That was most people was expecting and thats why lots of people say they will just lose money. And those telling Diablo 3 is similar to Torchlight 2 you realy need to take a care look on both, beause you are mistaken! It may be the same gender of game, but the aspects in each one are way diferent. Just compare the companies, or even the time spent making both games and you see the diference.
I could see someone opting to buy a used copy of a game if all they were missing out on was some sort of DLC such as a gun in a FPS. However, some games such as EA Sports MMA come with the one time use code for online multiplayer access. That seems like a much bigger deal. If game developers want to make sure they are getting enough money for their product they should focus more on making one that wont be sold back to the store in the first place or release DLC to boost their revenue.
Bravo Force... I think that if it is clearly stated in the eula that the extra DLC is NOT part of purchased game but rather a 'gift' from the developer for you buying the game, then that model is ok... But for the person who then buys the game 2nd hand, there should be something in place for them to also obtain the DLC
If someone buys a car, uses it daily, keeps it in good repair then becomes tired of it. Do they have the right to resell it? And if someone buys this used car, does the seller have to forfeit a portion of the profit to the original manufacturer? No. Game publishers have absolute control, you never own the game thanks to EULA and that tiny fine print on the back of your manual spouting legal jargon. At least gamestop/eb is giving someone a chance to buy the same game for a lower price.
instead of worrying about the used game market they need to figure out a real solution to pirating. 3 of the 6 friends I know who are currently playing skyrim have pirated it.
I'm fine with the DLC being attached to the game like this. It's not really a question of rights because you still own the game and can play the game in its current state.
I think it's only a problem if the DLC is required, or creates game-balance issues.
I would think of this as a free coupon with purchase. If you bought an item with a coupon and resole the item, you can't resell the coupon if you already reused it. Any product that comes with a free add-on is like this.
unless the games DLC was about 20$ no 1 will care if they buy a game for 40 and have to pay 10$ for other DLC. its not really worth it for ppl to buy new games just based on a roughly 10$ DLC
You don't actually own the game though, you own a licence to play it. You don't own the files on the game, otherwise you'd be allowed to redistribute them as you want. It's why filesharing is illegal, I don't see why you should be able to do it with the physical disc either, you're letting people play who didn't pay for it to the licenser.
@tidenburg actually, you should have the right to re-sell whatever you bought. while you technically don't hold the copyright to the game, this right is an exception that most countries recognise. if you didn't have this exception, ebay wouldn't even exist. the problem here is not whether the used game market is illegal, but rather is it a good direction for game developers to incorporate ways to force gamers to purchase only new copies. imagine if we had no used car or book market!
@Schlamp96 ... because you actually own the car. With a game you just own a license to play. @caderz, sure it's kind of something that governments allow, but technically it's not right. Publishers are only recently really catching on about it. They actually are in the right though. |:
trouble is when you buy games you re actually buying the right to play their property, the game rights still belongs to them and that is why they see the used game market as being a big loss. From their point of view, it is the same as piracy because some are making money on it without the rights holders getting anything and with our current law system they are right on that. If not, anyone could make a mario or starcraft game after buying the game from any shop.
The open market will determine the pros and cons of the launch DLC maneuvers by the game companies. If their customers are willing to dance to that tune, and pay for a new game in order to get that extra content, then the companies will be proven right. If not, then the used games market will continue to exist. IMHO, the used games market will persist, so long as physically-transferable games exist. If games go to a non-physical format, it's a whole, new paradigm. ='[.]'=

Make a good game so you don't have to worry about people selling it. This sounds like pure greed trying to stop used sales.

@Stewiethebig The DLC is a free bonus. They are giving you added content that other people have to pay for. "It's my property" is fine, but it is a free bonus.

Dussalve 3 months ago
The DLC protected content is a perfect way to protect "intellectual property" to increase its value for buying directly from manufacturer and not "illegally". That is what is in the license agreement. We don't need laws or US Firewalls.

I dont think Torchlight II will get stomped, it has a very dedicated fanbase and its gonna be a very cheap and customizable alternative to Diablo 3.

@Zitaloc It was confirmed at PAX that the price will be 20$ at launched
Zitaloc 3 months ago
developers have already raised the price of a new game from 50$ to 60$. This is just a case of the gaming industry trying to milk more money from the market. I am in college and I do not have a steady job so I only buy used. The one time only DLC will cause me to possibly not even want to buy the game in the first place.
tie233 3 months ago

So...DLCs are convenient.
rvnbld 3 months ago
I'm all for DLC at launch. It gives people who really wanted the game something extra for their money and those who didn't really want it can just get the experience they wanted (campaign, online multiplayer, etc.) without having to pay full price. Also, a lot of game companies allow you to buy that DLC code if you bought a used copy, so they still make some money back anyway. I've noticed that it's gone as far as paying for an online code just for multiplayer (Homefront).

Tell me what is the differens between piracy and used sales for the develpers?
buto29 3 months ago in playlist Flere videoer fra ForceSC2strategy
@buto29 Piracy means that they didn't even get the initial sale (new). It also means that you probably can't sell it, so places like Game Stop miss out on the resale of a used game also.
chaff5 3 months ago
@chaff5 I know the differens. But for the develeper it's the same they don't get any money if you pirate or if you buy it uses. Do you get my point?
buto29 3 months ago
@buto29 From the developers standpoint, a used sale means there was a new sale to begin with. I see where you're trying to go but you can't focus on just one aspect of the situation. Piracy hurts everyone, not just developers, because not only do developers get nothing for their work but they drive up prices for the rest of us so that they can still meet the profit margin they've set.
chaff5 3 months ago
@buto29 piracy means 0 dollars and used sale means you already had sold for 60 dollars. Were you sleeping in math class? What the dude that gave you 60 dollars does with the game is no more of your business... how can people defend corporations and their right to milk people is beyond me...
sinekonata 3 months ago
I personally don't really care about DLC so this doesn't effect me, but I agree that game companies have the right to try and make more money. That's the way they choose to keep up their business. If you have a problem with the way the companies publish their games, then don't buy the game.

Launch DLC is a scam. DLC that comes out within 90 days of a launch is a scam. But we've already fed the machine. They know now if they pull this shit that we fall for it, so its only going to get worse.
fryedegg 3 months ago
@fryedegg
If a company wants to add extra incentive to purchase the game brand new, then more power to 'em. It's not a scam, and if you think it is then there's this wonderful thing called freedom. A game company doesn't force you to deal with them. If you don't like their product or business practice, then don't deal with them. That simple.
Soupflakez 3 months ago
@Soupflakez Your logic is very sound Soup and I dont disagree with you. My main point is basically we as consumers have empowered the game company's to do this regularly. They know if they dangle the worm, we are going to bite! (most people anyways.) So they see $ signs. Cant blame them, but doesn't mean I have to like it. Had we not bought into most of the BS DLC, it may not be as rampant as it is. HL2 had a good model for DLC, now everyone has spun that into easy money.
My 2 cents.

Same thing.

If gaming companies want to make money off of used games they better start getting some locations where they buy their games back giving a little more money for them and selling them cheaper then their rivals. If not, then deal with it. I mostly buy used games when I do buy them. (minus skyrim, that was a new one for me lol) I would think people who can wait for the used games probably don't care for some extra content.
moety2 3 months ago
I think the two main reasons why this will hurt TL2's sales is that it's missing Holiday sales and is too close D3 launch.
I plan on playing both D3 and TL2, but I'll be buying D3 at launch and will wait to buy TL2, maybe on a Steam deal now. Otherwise I would have played and beat TL2 before D3. People on a tight budget might only be able to buy one of them, now they have to decide D3 or TL2. Before they could have got TL2 for Christmas and D3 a couple months later (lets hope only a couple)

I don't buy too many games, so I'm not impacted by this as strongly, but I would be actually okay when a developer makes it completely impossible to resell a game.
If you wanna play a game you should pay for it. If you bought a game and played it then you've got your moneys worth right there.
LeonardLew 3 months ago
@LeonardLew While I think it's debatable whether the statement "you bought a game and played it = you got your money's worth right there)" is true, I think the point we're discussing is whether it's true of the developer that "you made the game and sold it = you got your compensation right there." Do developers have a "fair" claim to further dividends resulting in the continued resale of that product? Answering yes seems to also commit you to agreeing they should just charge more upfront.

Drop the price down to $50 even and offer the game completely as a download (they save money no printing) or have a cd key with the disk that when you enter is locked on your account and only way to play it is to have that key, so we have to shell out less for a game and only way to buy it is new
NIKG3tBODi3d 3 months ago 2
Most of the time, when you purchase a Used game that has First Owner Content, such as Dead Space 2 and Batman: Arkham City, you can purchase a code from the Xbox Live Marketplace, or Playstation Store; that gives you a code which you can then use o access the First Owner Content. I'm not positive, but it only makes sense that the money people spend on these codes very likely goes to the developers, or at least a large percentage of it. I totally agree with this, as long as you have the option.
Bubba9078 3 months ago

S3v3n11a 3 months ago
Some of these game companies should step up the quality of their games. Perhaps stop coming out with the same game in a sequel with different maps (cough COD, assassins creed, etc.) once a year or more. If they bump the quality perhaps players wont feel the need to sell their copy so quickly and keep the game to purchase DLC that expands or improves the game.
fazzmanic 3 months ago
Developers are not losing any money from resales of their game in the used game market, rather they now want a slice of the used market pie. They created a product, set a retail value, and released it for purchase. If some gamers decide that product is not worth the initial price tag and would rather wait to buy it used, that's just a reality of a supply and demand. Is adding DLC going force more people to buy a new copy of the game (instead of used) or lead more people to not buy it at all?
casteroc 3 months ago
@casteroc DLC has never made me buy new. However, it has made me wait till the GotY Edition with all the DLC.
Publishers don't make a penny on used games. With DLC they can. They are making higher budgeted games and need to pay them off, this is how they decided to do it. Also greed is involved for some.
I'll buy a complete feeling game at launch. If DLC completes them, I won't.
I'm careful buying used now. If I see a $10 game I make sure I'm not going to pay $10 more just to play it.
Kuvter 3 months ago
I'm definitely not okay with publishers trying to make claims on games that already cost $60. On that note Gamestop can go to hell. I've bought a few games in the past and tried to sell them back the week I've gotten them and was offered way below value. Sell on craigslist! You'll make way more in the long run with only a minimal amount of effort.

publishers and dev teams need to make money they are not trying to force you to buy a new copy, or exclude anyone from content ea has the best means to comabt this issue with the online passes if you buy it new you get it free if you buy it used you have to buy the pass for i think it 15 bucks. if i spent years of my life to making a game to then not make anything off the later sales because of used sales i would be pissed off much like they are.

EA does this for Dragon Age and a few other games.
denrizza 3 months ago
Im alright with DLC at launch. Game companies have to make money somehow and soo many people would rather buy a game used or online for cheaper if its available, which gives the makers of the game NO money. How is that fair for them?
gdoggcasey 3 months ago
@gdoggcasey Game companies have to make money somehow? How about charging 60 dollars for a freakin game?! Every used game out there was purchased at retail price once. You think Toyota should get a cut when you sell your 10 year old used Corolla? Launch DLC is BS. They're just trying to soak more money out of the gaming public.
woeskwee 3 months ago
@gdoggcasey Game companies have to make money somehow? What's the price sticker on the case represent? That's how they make their money. Releasing quality DLC extends the life of the game and makes them more money. Squashing the used game market doesn't make them money, it stops other companies (Gamestop) from making money, and, in my opinion, hurts the gaming community as a whole.

i think the DLC is a good idea but i dont think it will solve the problem that gamestop and other companies cause by selling games. if 20 dollars is the difference between a weapon or a map or something minor, im not really going to be looking to get that one item im missing just to pay a large, or even sometimes small higher fee to buy the game. i mean i like the idea, i get more stuff when i buy used games. woohoo! but at the same time i would like to be able to actually sell my games....!!!!!
theroge007 3 months ago
If you buy a new 60$ game you get the game, pretty good deal and the publisher get X amount of money from the store that sold it.
If you buy a 30$ game you get the exact same thing as the guy who payed 60$ The publisher gets nothing, and the game store gets all the profits.
so yeah I'm fine with them adding DLC too the 60$ price tag they get more new copies sold, you get DLC for free, and those who want to buy it for 30$ have the extra money to spend on DLC.

It's an obvious attempt to make more money for the games companies and stick two fingers up at independant stores which struggle as it is to survive with games being downloadable now.

I used to work in a computer games store and I think it's discusting what's happening to the used games market.

DoYouDontYou89 3 months ago

@tidenburg Why should u be able to resell a car then?
Schlamp96 3 months ago

Would it just cost them more money to keep the machines running to make new copies?

The open market will determine the pros and cons of the launch DLC maneuvers by the game companies. If their customers are willing to dance to that tune, and pay for a new game in order to get that extra content, then the companies will be proven right. If not, then the used games market will continue to exist. IMHO, the used games market will persist, so long as physically-transferable games exist. If games go to a non-physical format, it's a whole, new paradigm. ='[.]'=
