If there's one reason to see the film it's simply to hear what the pathetic FBI intelligence team has to say about the case. "I wish their had been an informant in 9/11" ahahha funny, idiots. They train the informant, brain wash the shift out of him and then say - we know these kids were going to commit "violent crimes" against "innocent people". oh god, you have to hear it for yourselves.
Also, there needs to be some kind of referendum on sentencing laws in America. The rest of the western world has been decreasing the severity of its punishment on its citizens as a mechanism of progressive correction and societal integration in recent decades. Whereas America seems unwilling to relinquish its parochial methodology and brutish mentality.
Not to mention this seemingly new and all but unchallenged legality to prosecute people for crimes they have not yet committed. Precrime?
Just watched this. My feeling is, the real problem is the growing police state and the corruption of ideas with which the "justice" system is permitted to manipulate issues in their own favor. Mostly, this looked like a pissing contest, and the feds wanna be the ones with the biggest dicks. Pardon that vulgarity, but that's what the attitude of the FBI seemed to be. Not routing terrorism, but rather typecasting individuals as terrorists as an excuse to penalize civil disobedience.
9/11 was an inside job. Given our government murdered over 3,000, I'm pretty sure the adversaries of our government are excusable, so long as their body count is lower.
I encourage you to see the movie. Your analysis is clearly based on a trailer that is a bit over a minute long, rather than the larger context the film presents. Its in festivals around the country and on national tv Sept. 6. Try to catch it one way or the other. Can't imagine that seeing it won't change your perspective...
@balloonknot . . . were victims of a dubious system. Ok, so what? Do we pardon them for Megalomaniacal ideas of "changing the world". How noble . . . and unrealistic. Before you cast me as a cynical rollover, please know that I've, for years, rolled up my sleeves and helped areas of a pretty fucked up world - through contributions of sweat, tears and time. Presenting these two "innocents" in a light of misunderstood intentions only enables their victimhood.
@balloonknot . . . In the film, these two guys spoke the language of victims. "They don't want to hear the truth, they don't want to even acknowledge the truth." So, these guys are definers AND defenders of "the" truth. This is a BS justification. The parents - one uses the word snitch. Snitch is a convict word, used by convicts. Sure it's common vernacular, but it's purpose in this context it to mark a victim for the purposes of the film. And that's the message of the filmakers: these 2 . . .
@ballloonknot71 Ok, 1st, I am far, far from right wing anything. 2nd, this case and the circumstances leading up to it doesn't seem to hold water. Did the feds run some kind of entrapment game? Maybe. Most folks though live lives that are far removed from any such experience . . . these two were playing with fire. So, there were consequences. I've seen people get more time for less severe crimes (e.g. unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, crossing state lines). The feds don't play . . .
Even though I know the lunatic fringe right wing loves its bogeymen -- the lack of connection in so much right wing cultural "criticism" with anything... well... intelligent. Or grounded in anything vaguely resembling reality, continues to astound on a daily basis. See the movie, y'all. Oh, wait -- that would undoubtedly challenge, ever so slightly, your sad, impoverished, dug in views of the world. The irony of your critique of the left is that you are exactly what you say you hate.
These two did make decisions, and did or are still suffering for them. This isn't about smearing the FBI at all. These two have always practiced non-violent means of protest until Darby decided to use his influence to convince them to use force. If your mentor suddenly spawned a more extreme plan of action for you to take I doubt you'd argue. Darby had ulterior motives to incriminate those that truly want to change this world. Not to mention each man took responsibility for the actions 100%
@LSDballerina It's called personal responsibility. How does throwing molotov cocktails and destroying property change the world? The directors completely distorted the timeline, story, and used an array of emotional tactics such as distraught family member interviews in order to smear Darby.
@jackel15 Believe me, they took responsibility-the only reason they weren't sentenced to more years in prison. They had no plans to throw the cocktails, and were in fact surprised to discover that they had been taken on the trip to Minnesota. I haven't seen the film in its entirety yet but as far as timeline goes, I'm sure their's is accurate. They don't need to smear Darby he does it to himself with all the lies he's told about being informant/why he turned. family members were used to display
It is pathetic where we've ended up as a nation. We glorify nearly every form of terrorism by lifting these sorts of twits into the spot lights as heroes somehow. Smear Brandon Darby and the FBI for doing their jobs --- trying to protect life -- and raise up these two nitwits as heroes. The producers of this film, as well as SXSW ought to be ashamed of themselves, as well as anyone who touts this film.
There will be consequences for our actions as a society in supporting this sort of nonsense
These two made decisions that led to consequences. There is no defense for these decisions. It is unfortunate that/if they were exploited by federal law enforcement entities. It is careless and irresponsible for the film makers here to continue to do so.Only when these young men let go of any and all aspects of "being right" will they cease to be victims. And not a minute before. Yet another choice.
@stymie50 I don't understand the comment "it is careless and irresponsible for the film makers here to continue to do so." To do what? Curious what you mean to talk about...
Oh, I get it. When caught plotting a terrorist act pretend YOU are the victim. Groovy.

Domestic disturbance. I always thought, that the terrorists was outside the US. We need an expansion of guantanamo in the states..;)
