As I recall, he used to work at George's in Toronto on occasion and one of our teachers got to know him. She invited him to our school to sit in with our stage band. From what i remember (30 some yrs ago) he wasn't a very big guy but he had a huge sound. He was very pleasant to talk to and had an ego a mile wide but not offensive at all. He's always been one of my favourite players.
I was a shy tenor player of 16yrs old, played the solo on In The Mood with Illinois sitting beside me at my high school stage band....he says, son if you dont think you're good nobody else will, then he proceeded to blow everyone away with his own version. Great guy and a great player.
Man that was NICE!!! I've got a compilation called TENOR TITANS and Illinois is amazing on it. His phrasing, intensity, soul, humor, and musicianship is par excellance and second to none!! Get it!!
God damn, that's pork, potatoes and gravy. ooo-wee!
