I was a home health aid for a person in Oregon and I saw the paper work. Amongst the choices my client could make were long term use of feeding tubes and other care wile in a vegetative state. She decided for herself she wanted to pass at home. It was all up to her till the end.
I think what's important to remember is that all of this is voluntary, so if your grandma doesn't want end of life counseling then she can simply tell her doctor to stfu and that should solve the problem. It's not like the gov. is rounding up old people in carts every 5 years for their "how to kill yourself" lesson, lol.
My father is 83, he is a farmer, STILL farms. I can not imagine him being hauled in every 5 years to talk about his end of life. If someone doesn't want to live any more & chooses to end their life THAT should be their decision. I don't want a series of questions put to them as though they are a financial burden on the country or their families. In your condition is life worth living? I work in a hospital & I watch people lose their dignity as they die. Some of my patients have been in the hospital for 3 yrs or more. Most of those are mentally gone, on ventilators, with foley catheters & anal tubes. It's bad. They have no dignity. If they were mentally present I believe quite a few would want to go but they can't. Their wishes are not known and their families are keeping them artifically alive even though they are brain dead & in one case rotting from inside out.

Of course Insurance companies review cost/beneft. Since it's a company, it minimizes "risk". So you, a human being, can represent a too high "risk", so you get eliminated. This happens now. Know anyone with Alzheimers? No one cares for them, other than their own families. Most need assisted living, no insurance, including Medicare, covers it. That's they way it is now. I'm speaking from personal experience, not from a set of "talking points".
Why doesn't market competition create the lowest price & best service? Because the product is care. Some problems are small & easy to fix, others are catastrophic & ongoing. I know a thousand pages is a lot to get through, but there are provisions for panels that will be set up to decide what treatments will be allowed for people at what ages. So how will the public option be any different than private insurance, other than the fact taxpayers will be asked to foot the bill? At least with private insurance, you have a choice and know what you're getting into ahead of time.
More committees, more wasted money, more control. That is what is happening. Private insurance is flawed because of one primary reason. Malpractice insurance, and out of proportion law suits against doctors. It is not as much the insurance companies that are flawed, but the system that the doctors have to deal with because of the courts.
No, the government is not going to 'force' anyone to use doctor assisted suicide, but what could/will happen is that the gov will decide that the six months worth of palliative care or hospice care aren't worth it for grandma. So, the gov will tell them that they won't cover it, but they will cover a doctor assisted suicide pill, if legal in the state.
In other words, the same problems we have with insurance companies will still be a problem with gov.
It isn't though. It is already happening in Oregon, where someone is denied treatment by insurance companies, but given the suicide pill instead.

The Republicans are scaring people into thinking that the government will be setting up death panels.
The Democrats are responding by stating the fact that Euthanasia is not in the health care reform bill.

Get some perspective- as a UK citizen I've grown up with the NHS, there's nothing sinister about it, all it is the RIGHT to LIFE that all humans deserve, being supported by a government YOU pay your taxes to. To reduce the cost of healthcare: 1) Limit the amount that lawyers can sue for to $250K, they have this law in CA, then doctors don't have to order any unnecessary MRIs, or write unnecessary prescriptions to cover themselves, 2) Have a co-payment for all visits of $10 or $25 to reduce recreational visits, 3) No free healthcare for illegals. They need to apply for citizenship, learn the language, & become an American . . . this won't happen though because the reform isn't about reducing costs.

They get a cold and go to the emergency room, an $80 visit without insurance, and the hospital rings up $300. Let's focus on the irresponsibility of the Mexican government. Guess what idiot? We pay for illegals now under the current system. That's right...if one has a heart attack & needs urgent medical care, the hospital is required by law to give it to them. And of course they have no insurance & thus no way to pay so the hospital eats the bill. So to make up for these cases (over $300 billion/year in unpaid hospital bills), doctors/hospitals/etc charge more for their services. That means insurance companies premiums go up.
If we insure them, we break...

I work in a hospital & I watch people lose their dignity as they die. Some of my patients have been in the hospital for 3 yrs or more. Most of those are mentally gone, on ventilators, with foley catheters & anal tubes. It's bad. They have no dignity. If they were mentally present I believe quite a few would want to go but they can't. Their wishes are not known and their families are keeping them artifically alive even though they are brain dead & in one case rotting from inside out.

My father met with his" death tribunal" that tribunal consisted of......him my mom my siblings and his doctor He was at the end of treatments for bone cancer he was 81 he was on medicare His wish? No hospitals, no nursing homes he asked to die at home in his own bed. We took care of him with wonderful care from Hospice and a visiting nurse He passed away 3 wks later with mom by his side, her hand on his heart It was the saddest and most honorable thing I ever did for him

Of course Insurance companies review cost/beneft. Since it's a company, it minimizes "risk". So you, a human being, can represent a too high "risk", so you get eliminated. This happens now. Know anyone with Alzheimers? No one cares for them, other than their own families. Most need assisted living, no insurance, including Medicare, covers it. That's they way it is now. I'm speaking from personal experience, not from a set of "talking points".

Why doesn't market competition create the lowest price & best service? Because the product is care. Some problems are small & easy to fix, others are catastrophic & ongoing. The market can handle the small problems the way you think - so, what about long term care, like for those with Alzheimers, cancer, or becoming a quadraplegic. Even though I am a conservative and in general, I do not care for this health care reform in its current state, this is one thing that I do find offensive from the right. How many of you complaining on this point have even drafted your own will? Let alone got "your house in order" in case the inevitable appointment with death should come sooner than you expect? Is anyone else bothered by the White House putting out propaganda videos. Imagine if Bush would have made streaming videos that aimed at garnering support for the war with Iraq or the Patriot Act.

I somewhat agree, but it's best to hear both sides of the case before making your decision, even if you think they're lying to you. I don't think they're trying to be deceptive or cold-hearted, I just think this direction leads to bad things. A person doesn't become a liberal politician to be a bad person, but I think the political climate corrupts people in both parties.

end of life matters involve whether a person once brain dead wants 2 be kept alive on a ventilator. or, if they want a feeding tube if swallowing causes aspiration pneumonia...etc not euthenasia, which is a capital offense in the USA...duh...

Euthanasia is not a capital offense in the USA. It is legal in Oregon, and Washington. It is not specified in the bill that end of life matters involve those things. It does specify terminal illnesses though...

I know a thousand pages is a lot to get through, but there are provisions for panels that will be set up to decide what treatments will be allowed for people at what ages. So how will the public option be any different than private insurance, other than the fact taxpayers will be asked to foot the bill? At least with private insurance, you have a choice and know what you're getting into ahead of time.

More committees, more wasted money, more control. That is what is happening. Private insurance is flawed because of one primary reason. Malpractice insurance, and out of proportion law suits against doctors. It is not as much the insurance companies that are flawed, but the system that the doctors have to deal with because of the courts.

First of all, that woman was part robot.
No, the government is not going to 'force' anyone to use doctor assisted suicide, but what could/will happen is that the gov will decide that the six months worth of palliative care or hospice care aren't worth it for grandma. So, the gov will tell them that they won't cover it, but they will cover a doctor assisted suicide pill, if legal in the state.
In other words, the same problems we have with insurance companies will still be a problem with gov.

It isn't though. It is already happening in Oregon, where someone is denied treatment by insurance companies, but given the suicide pill instead.
I'm not sure what the solution to this is. I'm just saying what it is not, and it is not government care. We won't be better off at all... we'll just be paying a lot more.

Just read the Oregon and Washington State Laws regarding Dr. Assisted Suicide. Then read the horror stories about what happens when a government dictates what type of care is appropriate for sick individuals.

Excuse me... I should clarify. Much of the problem is not government. Insurance companies ARE a problem... but to think that government will not be susceptible to the same temptations is fanciful. That is what I'm arguing.

Thank you for saying that insurance companies are the issue. I don't think government had anything to do with the incident you mentioned. It was probably a problem with the medical treatment is not being covered by the insurance provider. That to me is a crime that should be stopped.

A problem with Youtube is that it's often hard to tell who's replying to whom. I mean, 'they' could be the government or the corporations that oppose healthcare reform. Or the illuminati. Or aliens.
But regardless of which 'side' you're on, I'd rather discuss the merits of the bill and the rumors surrounding it than accusing someone of not owning their own thoughts and words. It's paranoid, destructive and doesn't do anyone any good.
