Files are high carbon steel and so are strikers, I make my strikers from files by forging them, also springs are high carbon steel but a bit awkward to hold, good video mate and you dont need to talk cause as its visually explained
It's hard to find a piece of flint in the wilds. Easy to find a piece of quartz. Use a carbon steel knife blade, not stainless it won't work, and scrap the quartz. You got sparks. Find a pine tree, easy they are everywhere in the wilds, and collect some pine resin. Resin is full of terpines, flamable stuff. Resin, dried pine needles, scrap some sparks on it, and you got fire. Not just fire, but really hot fire from the terpines. Be careful as the terpines drip hot flames.
@BKMillMan That's right, however the point was that the stone needs to be able to maintain a sharp edge in order to shave the steel, hence things like sandstone wouldn't work. Thanks for the input tho.
Celeran1 There is flint everywhere if you go out to a clearing with many rocks flint will have a colorful glass apearance indians used flint to make arrowheads google flint to see what it looks like and just go searching you might find an arrowhead on the way there.
But you can buy "commercial flint and steel kits" in military shops which isnt really a flint and steel, but it works the same way. And you dont have to search
flint/magnesium $6 wal mart.Use dryer lint to start a fire I have a video where we start a fire using lint dipped in wax this is a good preparation b/c it is waterproof and keeps your lint dry for when you need it the wax gives you plenty time to build a great fire. I take a coffee filter place some lint in it seal it with a bread wrapper drop them in melted wax do this 2x to waterproof. When you need it cut it open and spark.
The idea was to show people that you can make sparks with a cheap 50 cent file, and that expensive fire steels are nice but not necessary. If you look at the flint striking vid I posted, you'll see how much faster it is to strike the flint with the steel.

It's flint stone.
bradwjensen 3 years ago 5
@bradwjensen It's onondaga chert. To be honest, you can get a spark out of any dense stone with an edge on it provided your steel is good.
antagonizerr 10 months ago
@antagonizerr The spark doesn't come from the stone, it comes from the metal shavings and friction from the file hitting the stone.
