GNOME 3.0's overlay usage is probably the best-thought-out software I have ever seen, besides the button-method for navigating a folder tree (which windows stole from Linux with the release of Vista)
you have no sense of what software's original intent was supposed to be--to work FOR humans, instead of making humans work for software. KDE isn't quite there yet. It needs some help.
Yeah, the MacOSX bar is really IMPEDING "power" users . . . So is spotlight . . . So is exposé . . . DAMN, IF YOU ARE GONNA BITCH AT INNOVATION AT LEAST TRY TO BITCH AT SOMETHING THAT'S NOT PROVEN ALL OVER.
God, everybody is a f**king retard.
Cheers, vineuser.
Let's hope good and creative programmers keep it up in spite of jerks everywhere.
The other two... no I agree it's nice to have, and it's really cool to see Gnome improving and making some real steps towards an incarnation of Gnome 3!
Is it really "moving forward". Looks more like sideways/backwards from this video. How many people for example actually use multiple desktops? They are not switched on now by default in ubuntu 10.04 and I suspect most people don't use them
i use multiple desktops. I enabled 4 just for the compiz effect after i got bored of staring at the cube i just left 2 enabled. That's about as many as I need (2) to be honest. It comes in handy becuase when I do audio editing it takes up the whole screen (several plugins gui, jack, ardour, audacity[to edit/playback audio files via jack] and so much more). On the next desktop i might open up Chrome to look up guides or chek msgs. So you see multiple desktops are a + with me. :)
I've been using this for weeks in my work computer.
It's amazing.
First of all, it's amazingly intuitive.
The sidebar only appears when you touch the upper-left corner with the mouse pointer.
You can drag and drop windows all around your desktops, everything's amazingly fluid, and, you can open recent files, recent apps and places with a click.

That's cool, but KDE already won. Ubuntu project should switch to KDE as the official desktop. On my desktop machine, KDE4.3 is much faster than Gnome and looks gorgeous. And utilizes Qt4 :)
Of course I've heard of (and used) Kubuntu. But it's just an unofficial community fork of Ubuntu and so the desktop integration to the base system is more or less buggy. I've for example always experienced some problems with WLAN on Kubuntu, but not on Ubuntu. One must usually log in to Gnome to do something that just doesn't work on KDE.
I think desktop users new to Linux will appreciate finding the virtual desktop function easily. Although I'm not fond of the sidebar as it stands, I think this can easily be improved.
On the other hand, I can see this being the bane of laptop users everywhere.
I'd like to thank the developers who work on Free Software for their efforts, and I don't want to be ungrateful. Even so, I've got a bad feeling about GNOME3, and the state of modern desktops in general.
I feel like people are putting bling and special effects before usability and efficiency.
I hope the gnome shell remains an optional feature. It looks to me like something that would perhaps help computer novices, but would impede power users.
Don't be hating, its got a long way. :) Submit a patch or stop pissin'
BTW on intuitiveness: Anything can be intuitive if you don't allow emotions and experiance get in the way. That may be a good skill for you to learn...
Hear that sound ? That's the sound of 99.9% of all desktop PC users walking out on you for being a self important elitist jerkoff... Like most GNOME devs...
A little empathy for the users whom you might actually expect to use the software... May be a good skill for you to learn...
every one please just remember this is still under heavy development and may well change, for example - I have suggested that the sidebar is still segmented by like a concertina in to sections and topics like app, then systems etc so the keyboard isnt used so much .....
At least try to be constructive rather than rubbishing it all!
In fact, this interface makes me feel sick just looking at it. I think it's the unintuitiveness of it, with the desktop zooming out etc. Seriously, what is the point? Why have this? It looks harder to navigate around applications
I really don't like this GNOME Shell. I hope it will never be the default interface. Otherwise I'll move to Xfce the day GNOME Shell will be introduced.
Jeez people, don't have your period. -_- This ain't the Windows world. As is with anything else in the linux world - nobody's forcing you to use anything that you don't like.
You think the new Gnome shell's a bad idea? Just disable/remove it when you have to deal with it. Kinda like what you can do with Compiz right now.
Just because you think it's a bad idea, don't ruin it for people who actually WILL find it useful. Sheesh.
I think people are also concerned about the impression of Linux as a whole to new users as well as their own experiences. I'm not sure what this new shell actually provides in terms of functionality that the user actually needs/wants
this IS useless. compiz can actually be rather useful if u don't run any pointless effects on it. I use things like expo and the cube rotate, but only perform ctrl + alt + left or right to keep from having to perform a really difficult way of holding buttons/moving touchpad on my laptop to switch desktops. oh, and while on the desktop issue, the GNU Object Model Environment, (or GNOME Desktop Manager) is only in stage 2.26, I don't know about 3.0. Gnome-Shell is just that. it goes OVER GNOME.
This seems absolutely useless, and truly decreases efficiency, I can't imagine anybody using this if they want to get the work done fast. Compiz is far less intrusive, specially without stupid effects.
Huh? You're saying that Compiz is the one *without* stupid effects? Compiz is absolutely chock full of gimmicky effects, that's kind of the point.
This looks far more focused to me, and while I wish it would work alongside Compiz, I love the concepts behind this interface and can't wait to try it out.
Are you idiot? This shell has no tend to be "lightweight". They are intensively using javascript there, so it would be very slow. Now it is more than 2 times slower than compiz (2.5 seconds vs 5.8 seconds in gtkperf). The effects are too slow. Activities takes too much time to open. I don't think they can overcome it - they aren't enough competent. They better use their old approach - incremental improvements. This project looks like daydreaming and would be a failure I'm sure.
wow im probably just going to switch to kde.

Is gnome shell as fast as metacity if you turn off all the features?
Can you still use ctrl-alt-left and ctrl-alt-right to shift workspace in gnome shell?

Haters. . . Why don't you get a f**king life. GNOME, Linux, FOSS is moving ahead whether you dig it or not.
KDE freaks--dudes, it's an alternative, if you don't like it don't use it. Options is what makes FOSS come to life.

"I don' like, too inefficient"

I think this should be added as the optional feature. It is clear that it cannot use this easily if the graphic function is insufficient.
vineuser 2 years ago
It is planned as an optional feature for 2.28, and a regular for 3.0
3.0 will be built around this and Zeitgeist, and I think that's awesome.
Currently, the GNOME desktop offers everything a guy could want . . . But the guy needs to put everything together himself.
GNOME without GNOME-Do and Compiz is a very rigid DE indeed.
Mac OS X and KDE 4 have done great on making things move.
I'm glad we are paying attention.
