  • mine just did this, but the apple store said mine was to far outta warrenty :\ they said like around $300-$400 to fix mine

  • THANK YOU!! I went to the Apple store with the exact same symptoms and they said I would be charged $1600 for a whole new logic board! I have the same model and everything so I should be able to get it fixed free then

  • THANKS A MILLION FOR THIS!

  • So I have this exact issue, and I took it in to an apple certified service place. They did the Graphics Processor Test, and it "passed", so they said my computer wasn't covered under the recall and it'll cost me over $1000 to replace. I guess I'll actually call apple and see if there is anything I can do. The computer is 3 1/2 years old... I was hoping that such an expensive piece of hardware would last longer than that.

  • if my macbook pro brokedown within a year i would ring up apple an tell them to replace it straight away, not repair. same as i do with my ps3 , ive had 6 ps3's so far an they replace for free, but tried charging me 130 to replace, so i hung up an tried again an spoke to a new person an they sed they would send 1 out tomorrow :)

  • Just happened to my Mac book pro black screen. Sent it to be fixed hope i don't have to pay for the Nvidia chip. Its 3 years old which is nothing really.

  • mine does that but after im using it. you think its my video card too?

  • My wife and I bought two MacBook Pro (13 & 15-inch) macs in the past two years. They both failed with the logic board issue. And the replacement would cost us a fortune. I bought those fancy but not long-lasting MBP for regret. We had owned PC (HP, Dell and Sony) laptops before, they are all last more than 5 years still in use. Then we started to using Mac. We were happy to own the good-looking, light-weight, fast-bootup macs at first, but are very disappointed with their longevity after use.

  • I had the same issue, and my logic board and graphics card has been replaced, everything seems to be working fine but I was wondering if anyone knows; does the graphics card eventually die no matter what?, is this an issue with the a certain few or is the graphics card just faulty altogether?

  • @moewahba35 Yes, it will die again, my 1.5 year macbook pro had already 4 logic board replacements because of this failure :(

  • My MacBook Pro is doing the same thing, unfortunately.

Contacted Apple support and I have a case number. Hopefully, the repair will be free and expeditious.

The 8600M GT GPU lasted about 3 years of almost constant use, though, so for a defective GPU, it held up okay. And, up until now, my laptop had been working perfectly.

Would have preferred if it wasn't defective, however.

And, good to see I'm not alone and not just with Apple, but with other computers that have used the same basic GPU.

  • I am in the middle of getting this problem fixed as of March 30th, 2010. IF this problem shows up within 3 years of original date of purchase-- Apple will replace the logic board free of cost-- Irrespective of having warranty or not. My problem is identical to this video shown here. Apple do what is known as the GPT=graphics processor test before undertaking the repair. IF you have this problem, you wont be able to get a display on an external monitor as well. Hope this helps anyone reads it!

  • that happen to me haha....

if u have apple care they will fix it for free..

those graphic cards were failing on alot of people from what apple told me

  • I have same problem with mine MBP. What did u do? I can't fix that problem my self, cuz i can't buy that graphic card... :S

  • I am taking Apple to small claims court next month. My battery exploded in this model. Then the video card went out. Plus, the entire computer fried. I purchased this computer for $4100 and it's been nothing but problems. If you have this computer, you need to call Apple. The battery is bad and will separate from your computer too. See you in court APPLE! It's the last $4100 you'll screw me out of.

  • Just happened to mine. Took it into Apple and they said they would have to send it to the main Apple to fix. I paid over $3000 for this piece of crap. The battery exploded too. In addition, the entire system wiped 2 weeks ago. I'm starting to lose my faith in mac.

  • @TrentStudios damn man that sounds really bad, howlong u had ur mac?

  • im on the same situation. but a few days ago i pluged it into another monitor and then it started working , the worked normally for two days and now again the screen is dead i fucking hate it.

  • I'm pretty sure this is a well documented video card problem. Nvidia knowingly unloaded a number of faulty video cards onto the portable market and now customers, including myself, have to deal with the hassle of having a $2000+ product become worthless after less than two years of use. A few customers tried putting together a class action suit against Nvidia, but that never amounted to much. Too bad.

  • That kinda sucks!

Not as bad as me! I've dropped my New MacBook Pro! I'ts dead :-(

  • I had this same problem, and recently had it repaired at a mac store free of charge. Now that I have it back, about 3 weeks later now, my screen has developed horrible bright spots, and at least 6-10 dead pixels in a group. I'm taking it back in to have the display replaced, or have the laptop declared a lemon and be given a new one.

  • Since apples offered to repair the damaged macbook pros for free, have you got yours repaired? did it take long? cause im in the same terrible situation :/... please reply

  • Mine is being repaired for free, and I have to wait more 2 weeks. I think it will be ok.

  • my powerbookg4 aluminum 1.67ghz/100gb/1gbram/128mbvram and i have a total of 7 apple repairs 3 hard drive failure 3 faulty logic board/and undetected memory module and perhaps another logic board problem...apple says...my warranty will end oct 25 2008

  • mine is completed dead, i am looking for the reset button is becoming like a g spot challenge can seemed to find it. i get no sound no video and no power even the power cord does not show a light like it did when it was working, i have a macbook pro.can someone help thanks..you can emial me with the responds thanks..

  • Died last Tuesday...

Bought August 09 2007 - out of warranty

    17inch/HighRez screen/160gig 7200rpm drive.

Mac Authority wants $700 to send it off to fix it. Going to the Apple store in Green Hills to see what they say.

Almost $4000 (including FCP Studio) and it's currently a brick. :(

  • I fix it, you need another apple to connect the bad one ...delete some files, and do some thing on terminal... 48 hours it take me to do it... but I wanna let you know mine was like yours..dead screen only,

  • im on the same situation. but a few days ago i pluged it into another monitor and then it started working , the worked normally for two days and now again the screen is dead i fucking hate it.

  • this would appear to be an inherent fault and therefore would fall under many countries' goods laws - eg UK sales of goods act - ergo Apple have to fix it because the flaw was there when you bought it.

  • Same problem here too, died yesterday and guess what...out of waranty.

  • you might have to take it apart and re plug in the monitor cable.

  • I have tried to use another monitor, and it didn´t work too.
