In actuality, though, it only took a couple hours to get working.. and it was intended to be the pre-cursor to making visuals using a wiimote, so this was just having fun in the name of bigger and better things (which sadly never developed.. oops ;).
I've been having the same thoughts recently. Actually a wiimote + nunchuk would do just fine i think, you just need to bind the buttons to useful in-game commands... hmmm, i'll have to give it a try when i get back home (in february ;)
Hehe, I think it's pretty fascinating the using the Wii-remote to play pc games has become the new big thing. Even though it seems like you can't use the motion sensing for most of the games so a normal gamepad would work just as well or probably even better. :)
aaaactually not quite true. Yes its becoming the next big thing, kudos for Nintendo for originality! You can map all the special movements using GlovePIE scripts, i'm addicted to VirtuaTennis 3 atm, all the swing/backhand/etc motions interpret in the game nicely. I'm adapting some diff scripts to translate things like swinging into a sequence of notes, while leaving buttons for other notes. June patch is adding tons o' features such as full 4 octaves(??), sustained notes, drums, etc.
It may work in some games but I've seen tons of forum threads and stuff about playing games like Oblivion with the Wii-remote without using motion sensing just for the fun of it, even though it has to be a lot worse than using a keyboard and a mouse. Sorry, guess I just failed to see what's so great about using the Wii-remote for playing instruments i LotRO. Looked like a keyboard would have worked just as well. But on the other hand I haven't even played the game (yet).
believe me unless you remap your keyboard it's really quite hard to jam, playing songs is perhaps easier but with the Wiimote its great for jamming. Also the low notes i've set to vibrate, so it's like a bassline when you hit it ;) i've been playing since beta and i've spent way too much time jamming on my lute =)
as for motion sensing, i want to add that support eventually so i can compose symphonies like a conducter ;)
Thats the point, you can remap your keyboard or even use a midi-keyboard to jam. As long you cannot control the music with motion sensing it is nothin better than a Wireless programmable joypad.
This is what you call ''having WAAAAY to much time" on your hands lol
