  • I had this in my TAS playlist and didn't notice until now it was mis-sorted.

  • my fastest run is 12 min, world 8-3 is my problem :( but nice

  • i can't even get past level 1-3 without losing a life... i shouldn't be called a gamer ;_;

  • i beat the whole game in 30 seconds once oh wait i mean 30 min

  • I tried pulling off 0:52 to 0:54 last night about 30 times. I CAN'T DO IT!!!! ARGGGG

  • @spicychicken2 do you slow down a very little bit in there (with a small jump of course) or do you not stop?

  • I don't want to hate on this or anything because it's pretty cool and i don't know because i haven't played the game in a long time but...

2:03 You had a lot of close calls but it looks like you should have died twice

2:06 Did you just walk over air?

There are many other cases like these two. I don't get it lol.

  • Fake 4-2 warp.

  • Not only am I amazed, but I have learned new secrets. O_O You are awesome!!!

  • Comment removed

  • 5:04 How did you do that

  • Hold on...without using an emulator and frameskip you are just 1.41 seconds behind the best tool-assisted speedrun in the world? That's...pretty insane. :)

You are a god among Mario players, good job!

  • @PaonSol The TAS is using different timing. This run would be about 5:02-5:03 using the same timing.

  • @Tomtelala

Ah, okay, thanks for the info. Still an amazing feat, of course. :)

  • @andrewg1990 Hardcore Brother =)

  • Did you Use TAS?

  • This is frickin imposibble!! O:

  • I think the videos games players before the crash of 1984 were better than the ones that came back after.

Atari 2600, Intellivision, CelecoVision were more fun, than Nintendo, Genesis, and Turbographics. Shoot em up games were for Nintendo, were rare.

  • How did he does that wall-jumping in the pipe? D:

  • @Superneeth23 It's a glitch. You just have to land precisely enough.

  • @xAidenMalakx Maybe, tho falling, then jumping again, just to go down the flag again may be a tad more time taking...not sure tho.

  • worldwide success

  • @xAidenMalakx You still have to let Mario slide down the pole. Also, read the FAQ Andrew made in the description =).

  • Caraca, sem pegar um só item ! q genio véi!

  • Mario had to get there under 5 minutes or the princess's pizza is free!

  • i see your making use of the hit frames

  • bowser spends 4 minutes planning how to kill mario and gets instantly pwned

  • you passed through an enemies hitbox alot in this i can hardly believe this is legit

  • Amazing. But what was the point in points on Mario, is there anyone out there that cares for the points they got??

  • @AlwaysUnited Actually, believe it or not, some people do pay to see speed runs of games they like, not saying somoene paid for this, tho, maybe he just wanted to do it, there's a community of speed runners out there who just do it to be no. 1. :P

  • I dunno, man. Been too-too long for me, for sure, but I thought the game was a lot more 'sensitive' than shown here. Maybe I just don't remember. Super cool none-the-less. Put a grin on my face to watch this, so thanks for that.

  • whether the game allows it or not, its not legit

taking advantage of glitches is considered cheating, no matter how you sugar it

  • @nofatchxplzthx It's cheating when you break rules set for what it is you are doing. Nearly all speedrun sites allow glitches, it is normally a part of speedrunning in general. Glitches are part of the game, even though it isn't intentional, and it is the game you are speedrunning. It's also impossible to determine everything in the game what is a glitch or not.

I personally think that glitchless runs are more boring to both watch and to make myself. It's also less skillful.

  • @Tomtelala sugar coat it all you want

  • @nofatchxplzthx Thing is, if you want a "glitchless" run, here you go: /watch?v=hP4q-B7yNUM&feature=channel_video_title

This is what most people who hate glitches like. Or maybe you'd call some of the tactics in that run cheating because of hitbox issues even still. When it comes down to it, it takes less skill to do a glitchless run than a glitch one. Why would I limit myself to playing glitchless when I can get a faster and far more interesting/creative run using glitches?

  • @nofatchxplzthx in speed runs its considered perfectly ALLOWED :P

  • amazing work!

  • screwattack send me here.

  • now beat minus world

  • thats awesome!

  • Many reason why this is fake: 1) Mario never gets hit despite touching enemies he should had die, in level 1-2, he hit a piranha plant and still makes the jump. In level 8-3, when he jumps over Bowser's, he hit one of Bowser's hammer and still makes the jump not to mentions there's a ton of Game Genie codes that will make Mario not get hurt by enemies. 2) the game glitch too much. 3) At 2:05, that pipe doesn't lead to the warp zone to world 6, 7, & 8. 4) the no cheating verification is bs.

  • @blueswan1984 read the full description of the video..

  • @blueswan1984 oh come on, it's common knowledge all those glitch are real and legit. For god sake, the game is 25 and there was speedruns of it about more than a decade now using the same tricks. Just take some time and read the Internet, SMB speedruns are the most known worldwide.

  • @blueswan1984 Learn the game propely as well as reading Andrew's cmoments before making dumb comments that lack knowledge. Just a tip.

There are loads of videos of Andrew playing live, even at a 25 anniversary event in New York in front of Shigeru Miyamoto. There is no cheating involved with this awesome gameplay.

  • @Tomtelala Awesome or not it's still look bogus, I want to actually see the guy playing it in able to believe it (meaning the guy, his NES, the game, and the actions all had to be seen in the video to be proven), not just gameplay (which could be mistaken for emulator or save-states playthrough). With a dump video like this anyone could assume anything. I know there's hit detection and glitch and all that in the game but it usually doesn't happen all that much.

  • @blueswan1984 I know that he has made videos on his channel where you can see everything while he is playing: TV, game, console, controller and him.

He has also, as mentioned with the anniversary, made several live performances in front of an audience. In January there was a speedrun charity marathon where he was playing this game, both blindfolded and normal.

Glitches in games more often if you know about them and actually try to do make them in a run, such as this.

  • @2:05 FAKE no sube por la planta pero aparece arriba, se ve que lo hizo por partes. No lo paso seguido lo grabo por partes.

  • I am not a big fan of glitch runs... but what can I say? You are crazy. And I can't even consider beating your glitch-free run ever (my time sits at 5m25s so far). Great work sir!

  • 4:37 Wait... how did he do that?!

  • @TheBlueArmadillo Yes, I would like to know as well.

  • @TheBlueArmadillo Also explained in Andrew's comments.

All walls are made out of 16*16 pixel blocks. If you manage to land just between two such blocks, with enough speed, Mario can get stuck in the wall for one frame. During that frame you are able to jump.

  • @TheBlueArmadillo He's using the Super Mario Bros: Parkour Edition mod.

  • @TheBlueArmadillo glitches, glitches everywhere

  • I always challenge myself to never stop running while playing this game. Very difficult.

  • how can he jump with such perfect timings it is IMPOSSIBLE MY BRAINS HURT

  • just friggin impossible how can you jump so perfect every milimetre and milisecond? Aint the clip edited or something?

  • @rafahenara It's achieved through many many hours of practice. The whole video is one playthrough of the game, nothing edited or put together. He is just this good.

  • @rafahenara I guess I played it a lot and it became like a reflex. The run is only 5 min, just think how many time you can play a day to train yourself. ;)

  • @andrewg1990 Isn't it possible to finish 8-3 at 244? I'm almost positive I've done this before, but it might have been in an emulator where the timing is off.

  • @PooFlingingButtmunch if you take the time to read the uploaded comments he said he didn't want to get fireworks

  • Sweet!

  • "Mario I need your help!" "I'll be there in less than 5 minutes".

  • @PRjumpman124 comment of the day

    lol

  • Surprising that the use of a glitch is allowed. The 4-2 vine/ pipe glitch.

  • I have a question that's intreguing me o__o. Why did you hit the wall on 4:08? It was acidental, or what? Because I totally know, and I've done it several times, passing that final part of 8-3 without any problems and without hitting the wall/slowing down.

Anyways, freaking awesome speed-run, and I recognize that this is in a real system.

  • @TetsuyaSantos If you check his video description, question 3, you can find an explanation to how it works and why he did that.

  • My hearth go boom boom you idiot you almost kill mario lol

  • Guy used an emulator to cheat you can tell cause of the bad quality. Then he is a cocky bastard no less don't worry someone really soon will break your fake "record"

  • @odcrl1 You, sir, are an idiot. A very jealous idiot.

  • 2:05 I never knew that was there! O_O

That's what I love about this game; you can play it for years and still be surprised when you discover new secrets.

  • You unnatural beast! How?!

  • Even though I like speed running, I'll likely never match such awesome skill like that :O

  • @ldcanete All walls contain of 16*16 pixel blocks. If you manage to land just between those such blocks, with the right speed, Mario will get stuck in the wall for one frame (1/60 second). During that frame you are able to make a jump.

  • @lipnox88 Game Genie is a cheating device. A TAS is NEVER EVER using cheats. You only add input to the game but you record it in slow motion while using save states. Check the website TASvideos to learn more about as you currently have the wrong idea =).

  • this seems to be fake, there is a walljump off a pipe, a secret with the vine ive never seen, and the koopa would have def killed him near the end. awesome run but if nothing else he had some sort of invincible cheat initiated by gamegenie and a few other small tweaks that feel very gamegenie like.

  • @lipnox88 You should read Andrew's description to have these answers answered. It is all played on console in real time without any cheating devices.

  • YOU win a girl friend

  • Bowser: Ha! it will take Mario forever to get here so i have plenty of time to prepare!

    4 minutes 58 seconds later...

    Bowser: FUUUUUUUUUUUU-

  • @ldcanete He answers it in the description.

  • Sorry Mario but the Guinness World Records employee is in another castle!

  • good job!!

  • 4:06-4:08 bullshit

  • @unorthodoxJ The game is programmed that if Mario is falling, he'll stomp on an enemy no matter where he hits it. I know this is weird, but that's actually how it works.

  • @unorthodoxJ Read the description. If this is "bullshit" he wouldn't add such seemingly blatant cheating, would he now? This game has retarded hitboxes.

  • Try the second quest! Unless there's not a fundamental difference

  • Can somebody explain the hitbox on those piranha plants for me? My NES isn't working at the moment so I can't test it myself.

  • @GiantMoth When hitboxes were made back in the early days, the programmers just made a square in the enemy sprite. This square is usually a lot smaller than the actual sprite. This is an easier and lazy way to make hitboxes, as if you want every pixel of the enemy to be part of the hitbox, you'll have to put more effort into it.

Another reason is to make it slightly easier.

I hope this explains it for you.

  • @Tomtelala Thank you, that was quite comprehensive.

One more question, though. Does this mean the hitbox is somewhere around the middle of the stem? Would make my own runthroughs a little easier if I knew.

  • @GiantMoth Check this youtube video eDaYK1cOCmw to be able to see the hitboxes display in the game. If Mario's hitbox is touching an enemy's hitbox, you'll die.

I hope that will help you!

  • @Tomtelala That actually was really helpful, thanks!

  • Imagine this guy playing Sonic 1!

  • @andrewwg1990

Bowser and the Hammer Bros. don't throw axes, they throw hammers. Hence the name "Hammer Bros." :)

  • TAS -.-

  • @Dingo1336 Incorrectly.

  • You must get so much pussy now!

  • WTF 5:06-5:08 O_o No....just No! Did you see all those hammers King Koopa threw? And Mario just......I.....don't even....

  • 02:04 - Clearly goes THROUGH the top piranha plant - Tool assisted.

  • @bilsta1000 First off, you don't seem to know what a TAS is. They aren't using any cheats or such. Everything done in a TAS works exactly the same as on console.

The reason why he can jump through flowers is the way the hitboxes work in the game. The sprites of enemies are a lot larger than their hitboxes. You should also read the explanations Andrew made in his description.

  • @Tomtelala Like I said he went through the middle of the plant, hence through the hitbox, should have been a death.

Means there's something stopping him from dying.

  • @Tomtelala The name "tool-assisted" means using tools to modify the game, either by speeding up or slowing down the emulator. You can't use tools on a console.

  • @LotsaSpaghetti84 Many people think that Tool-Assisted is the same as using a lot of cheats to change the game, the game is the same. The tools used are used to find the limits of the game, how fast it can be beaten when everything is perfect.

Slow motion is used to simulate perfect human reflexes. Save states are to overcome the human errors. In the end you'll have a file with pure input that is added to the game, if this input would be used on console, it would be the same

  • Comment removed

  • @LotsaSpaghetti84 Of course it does. That's why Andrew has been practice like insane in order to achieve this run.

You don't need to explain too much stuff to me, I'm very used to everything speedrun and TAS related as well as knowin Andrew. But still =).

  • Comment removed

  • Tool assisted

  • @LittleLeeHere It's Andrew assisted, not Tool Assisted. All made on console in real time. No hacking, no modifications, no tools, no cheating.

  • Well, Merry Christmas indeed haha. This is awesome in so many ways, you are truly the best Andrew. Congrats!

  • Oh Great AndrewG, I beseech you. Teach us mere mortals the secret of 370 on 1-1.

  • That's insane. Well done.

  • @TrevorSeguin Thanks! :) Hope you're doing well Trevor.

  • I've seen your run during the marathon it was very cool and entertaining !

Btw I have a question for you. Mario seems to hit a bit two blocs, the first is the brick block when you reach the "upper level" at 01:58, and the second when Mario fall down he seems to hit a coin block at 02:00 or 02:01. I know it's practicly invisible but don't you think it slows you a bit?

SMB TAS a approximatively the same time so i think it doesn't change anything...

Very good run btw, congrats !

  • @crapaud65 He does it on purpose. As you see the pipe the goes through brings him to the wrong location.

  • Isnt getting less coins going to improve your time? (the score countdown at the end of levels)

  • @iiYoan The score countdown is the time you have left at the end of the stage. And it isn't faster to be slower in order to get a faster score countdown.

  • CONGRATS! Excellent run.

  • Comment removed

  • @MrBroken030 No. This was done on 8-3 in the last run and was one of the things improved in this run. Grabbing the flagpole at the bottom causes mario to walk slower after getting off the pole. I believe grabbing the top of the flag pole saves about half a second.

  • 5:06 Don't blink.

  • @Ztrigg I think what you are trying to point out is that the video skips. However, it actually does not skip at all. When Bowser changes directions it simply creates the illusion of the video skipping. Watch again and focus on Mario and the hammers.

  • @resident0evil0 That's a good point, although pointing out a video skip was not my intention.

  • @Ztrigg If you are trying to point out that he got hit by the hammers I think you are wrong again. It's VERY close and I even questioned it myself. So I downloaded the video and went through it frame by frame and he missed them.

  • My goodness, that's fast. :D

  • Wow, congrats

  • I don't think you haters out there know just how legit Andrew is. He has made this attempt in front of the Legendary Miyamoto before at Nintendo World. He has played this game in front of the Twin Galaxies refs. He also plays Donkey Kong & is godlike at it already, nearing Hank Chien, Billy Mitchell, Steve Webie etc & those of Legends of the Arcade. That's just my first point, the second one is, just copy what you see here & you'll find you can do EVERYTHING too! The game play & he is legit!

  • @EmpireArcadia This commenter, TriForce Johnson, has a world record on this Super Mario Bros., being the most points on the Playchoice-10 version. I saw him do that, and if someone of that playing ability says that this run is legit, it is.

  • @EmpireArcadia I thinak its a fake on the first world there is no warp to the end

  • @ponchdaddy13 But there is one to world 4, which he used.

  • @ponchdaddy13 ... I watched him do this speed run live in front of thousands. He actually raised something like $300 in 10 minutes for charity by attempting the run blindfolded too. Fake? Nope. Everything he does in this run is for a purpose right down to the amount of coins he collects if I remember right.

  • @EmpireArcadia I know your a point presser with this game, but have you ever tried to go for speed yourself?

  • @Ztrigg Nah, I don't like time trails or speed runs to be honest with you. Even if I tried...I'm not competing with Andrew. I'll get bodied for sure.

  • @EmpireArcadia I don't blame yeah, it's like using cheat codes in a sense that it takes the original idea of fun out of it. I tried it once with the first Sonic. I only did the first act though. It took 30-31 sec and I got the achiev for it on xbl but that was about it.

  • Such a flawless run! I should buy you a pizza!

  • Wow, congrats! I'm very curious, since the 4:59 was already without flaws, where did you gain that extra second exactly???

  • Game GenieCode-YNPPPO-Invincibility-from-all-attacks.

  • who cares if this is fake?

  • @Davy2612 stfu

  • @Davy2612 Glitch = Not intended to be in the game, cheat = Against the rules, neither of these here.

No one said all levels, and it IS a speed run, maybe if he had said Speed run of all the levels then yeah, he'd be cheating, but he didn't, there may be a different record for that, tho.

  • @silverleon777 as in speed run, one usually assumes it will be all levels.

  • @Davy2612 Incorrect, the goal of the speedrun of a game is to finish the game as fast as possible, if one can skip levels, they will, unless specified by the runner, or the one the speed run is being made for.

There are different kinds of speed runs too, so there's no real "set" rules on speed runs other than the obvious not using hacks, and such that require outside help to finish them.

But other than that, this speed run is entirely legit as far as regular speed runs go.

  • totally fake: Humans cant jump that high. Mario jumps like 7x his own height, that would prolly break legs! Also, the bushes look just like the clouds, and Ive never successfully traveled through pipes. totally fake!!!

  • 4:35 that's a very tough move

  • fake you missed to much coins

  • Nice run mate, The end with bowser and the hammers is a bit dodgy, but ive gotten through them like that before in the old days when i was a kid :)

  • What the hell bowser hit him at the end this sucks and is fake

  • @bethodman Look again, he managed to jump between 2 of them.

You do know the hitbox is a bit smaller than the actual body, right?

  • Does running into the side of that block at 2.00 count as something that could be improved on?

  • @dark0ssx No, that was intentional. Doing so made him move a little bit forward on the screen, and, in doing so, he tricked the game into making that pipe send him somewhere else, in this case, the warp zone.

  • wtf dis game grafics suk

  • to darn good... how is it even fun to be playing a game this fast..

  • @gtafan110010 If you actually know the game inside out, it becomes fun. It's just like any game, master it and it becomes fun. More when you're at a competitive scene, in this case, speed runs.

  • Andrew is well known, but this video is either fake or editied? Which one is it Andrew?

  • Nice dude well done!

  • Mother of god...

  • Comment removed

  • This comment is to all the actual people commenting on the legitimacy of Andrew's skill. I try not to get into people's business "when" I can but...in all fairness, I use to be a doubter just like you guys but I know Andrew personally on a competitive level...he is legit. He's not some random guy trying to make a name for himself. In the classic gaming scene he is well known and well respected by some of the pioneers and legends that started competitive gaming. He's the real deal.

  • @andrewg1990 Congrats! Your too Godlike. Oh a piece of advice...ignore the haters.

  • As for the hammers at the end, I must say I've never done that before, but all the piranha plant and 'double jump', I can say is real. I mean, the best I've done is 5'09, but I'm convinced this is pretty much legit.

  • @andrewg1990 wow, either this is a coincidence or they are just the same person who is jealous of epic speedruns because they are a miserable fail.

  • @originaldib try doing this and see how possible it is to jump through bowsers hammers and through piranha plants at the right time and speed.

  • It is not hard to play bad. But it is hard to play as good as Andrewg here.

  • game genie never beat an NES game without it

  • @Jerry4050 nice!!
