I remember this was all the safety car's fault. The safety car was speeding down the stretch and everyone was trying to keep up and then the safety car suddenly slowed down. You cant see that far through all the roostertails and everyone checked up behind the safety car and got into each other.

I read about this crash and the pace car crossed the start line at 93 miles an hour then slowed suddenly when everyone braked they hydroplaned causing the acc. He had plastic surgery to his face and cannot use his arm ending his career. I do not know if he lost his eyes either. 90 secs in 800 degree fire

Watch the second half of the video; another driver stops and helps put the fire out himself, then pulls Ota from the car, who amazingly and thankfully survived. However, the visor melted onto his face, and there's a really horrible bit in the next video where he is lying on the ground with smoke coming off his helmet (very disturbing). Thank god for modern safety equipment to ensure nothing like this happens ever again.

Racing in the rain is perfectly normal. The marshals are behind the barriers so they don't get mown down by things like this. They can't really do anything until the track is clear otherwise they just put themselves in danger. Besides, that's what the guy going ape with the flags is doing - signaling there has been an accident and calling other marshals to the scene.

Prior to this accident some cars used fuel cells, and others used stock gas tanks, this one had a stock gas tank obviously...

The driver of that Ferrari F355 is Tetsuya Ota and he was badly hurt.He is still living today but he was unable to function his right arm, right shoulder and fingers properly, causing an end to his racing carrer
