Did you for example know, that prior the sea level rised (ice in north and south melted), most of The Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea was land araes with lakes? An event present time, can be compared to same type of event in history, and a prediction based on facts (words and evidence on that what have been said is the truth) can be made; "If we do like that, this will happend".
Then there are examples of different made decitions of same event; "But if we do like this, this will happend".
And "if we do nothing, this will happend".

One mistake I've noticed even skeptics making is the assertion that the Mayan calendar actually ends this year. This December will mark the end of a time period called a ka'atun (may be spelling this wrong), but there are plenty of examples of Mayan artwork with dates far into the future. This period ending for the Maya is kind of like how we celebrate the turn of a millennium or century, but with more religious significance.
