@XraineX if you want to play the flute with music or live you have to order the concert D one, its more expensive but its standard 440 tuning. I'm not sure what you mean by the 21 tuning, I didn't order the concert d and it came in D# . hope that helps.
@alxk78 well the more inexpensive one is labelled the sakuhachi 21 tuning... What does this one not have compared to the concert key one? And also, why is it called concert D? I thought the universal concert key tuning key is C....
I purchased this flute and let me tell you it sounds incredible, it took me 5 hours to find the sweet spot now I'm hooked. The only thing, is that its tuned to D# not D most . If you are going to order this specify the exact tuning you want.
I love these videos Erik maks. When Im down, tired or frustrated i just sit back and watch his videos and feel such a peace flow over me. Erik, you bless people in ways that are so helpful and I thank God for you and pray your life is also filled with years of peace and happiness. :)
@Xlander1000 Hi there, this video was made in 2007, hence the prices have gone up since then. Erik does sell a bunch of his flutes at a much discounted price on his website under "WHAT"S NEW" and check out the Cascabel flutes. Hope that helps.
@Xlander1000 Eriks flute are absolutely excellent in every way. I own many of his flutes including this one. Its well worth whatever price he asks because your getting quality and the time to correctly make and tune these flutes. You wont be disappointed if you choose to buy one of his. :)
@Xlander1000 Eriks flute are absolutely excellent in every way. I own many of his flutes including this one. Its well worth whatever price he asks because your getting quality and the time to correctly make and tune these flutes. You wont be disappointed if you choose to buy one of his. :)
@shatomea I'm sure Erik's flutes are wonderful and I have no doubt that they are worth every penny. I will just have to stash some money away until I have enough. I was just surprised that he would say the flute was only $20 in the video and then when I visited the website I found that the price was actually much higher so I was a little surprised and dissapointed.
Yeah, the Shak's utaguchi (mouthpiece) looks kinda rough. Ever thought of making a Chinese Dongxiao? The mouthpiece isn't as easy as the quena's, but looks easier than the Shakuhatchi. There are a couple sites that give you the scale.
To anybody sitting on the fence about buying this guys flutes....DO IT. I got mine a few days ago and it's great. Build quality is good and the tuning is almost perfect (he tunes by ear). I'll post a video when I get the chance showing what the average joe can do with it right off the bat.
@thatmomentwhen I've been asking him that for forever. Trade secret I guess... Your best bet is just to Google the name of the instrument. What I do is find pictures and scale 'em up. I hate math, but ratios and proportions are helpful.
@heavymusic1scool The only thing his amplification system changes is a reverberation quality but yes the flutes really do sound that good once you get the technique down.
@heavymusic1scool Yeah. He has a microphone hooked up to an amplifier. He plays his flute into the mic. The signal travels through the cable to a reverb pedal. Said pedal gives the sound the light echoing effect. It's similar to how you'd add reverb to an electric guitar.
@heavymusic1scool I spent $150 on a flute from him for my very first side blown flute and I would do it again. Totally worth it in my opinion. You just can't get too frustrated, it'll take time to master. Like guitar, or any instrument for that matter.
@nuclearbulldog Im thinkin of buyin one for 123 dollars form his website but do you think its worth it if you want exact the same sound as in this viedo?
@nuclearbulldog cant you just put up a video of just some clear tones im sure it would be apreciated by many cause theres barely any videos of oriental flutes speically this one without mic ^^
@Saturnstales He is playing a bamboo one! Check out his website in the description if you want to purchase one for $90-$150 plus shipping. They are traditionally made out of root but a true high quality one made from root can cost you thousands. You can probably find them for $500+ if you search online hard enough. Remember that the end blown version is the traditional one.
Is there a specific name for the type of Shakuhachi that are blown into from the side rather then the top? Because I'm interested in buying one, and I can only seem to find Shakuhachi that are played from the top.
Unbelievable. There is no better sound in the world. I ordered the shakuhachi side blown from you a few days ago. I tried making one from the bamboo growing in my yard but I think the price to have one of yours to copy will be worth it.
I have a Shakuhachi which I am learning to play but it does not look like this - you blow down the end as though into the neck of a bottle. Moving the flute up and down creates octaves and a rich variety of sound - not sure how you would do that on this flute with a conventional sideways mouthpiece - sounds lovely though ;O)
how to make an oriental flute?....pls guide me.. its better i can make it that flute...what the reuirements things to do?.. what the dimensions? thnx a lot..
Your instruction on each different flute...now i understand so much better of them. I purchased a traverse bamboo flute about 12 years ago but the instruction that came with are so difficult understand...and i gave it up. Now your video provoked me to start again. i also will check into your website.
Oh yeah, btw can you actually play a shakuhachi like a transverse flute or do you have to make a copy of it (as a transverse flute) like the one in your video? O:
Actually, I think it's because of a reverb effect added in while they edit the audio/video. In Erik's latest videos the reverb is still present outside, and occasionally can be heard while's talking.
I'm having so much fun with this side blown shakuhachi I bought from you Eric.
I've never played a wind instrument before and so I spent the first 45 minutes blowing on it, confused as to why it wasn't making a sound. :p After reading your instructions I managed to produce a tone and quickly noticed that if you don't blow correctly, you can still produce a tone, but the finger holes (one by one) won't make a difference. It's really subtle and I'm really loving the learning process.
With a school band background in your normal instruments such as trumpet and sax- I had never thought of musical instruments as having "voices" and "songs" of their own, I just thought that every instrument could play every note within the key it was in- flutes included- using half steps and other fingerings to achieve this.
Since taking up collecting flutes, making, and playing them I haven't read any music- and every flute I have has its own character and songs and melodies that it seems to like. I play what I want, but I also think that the flute itself is a character, and participates by telling me what it wants to be played like by how it sounds.
Thanks for the display of the diversity of flutes, scales and fingerings from throughout the world and highlighting the various and vast "souls" of flutes.
No, it's not difficult at all to play... provided you already know how to blow into a flute. The only thing I find difficult is that it's -almost- too big for my hands to completely cover all the finger holes.
relax your lips and blow 45 degrees downwards and blow gently for lower octave and tigten your lips abit and blow abit force. i think quena and transverse flute are very easy to blow and very relaxing
This flute is so interesting! Why does it sound like a Shakuhachi? Because a shakuhachi is played vertical. Or is this a side-blown flute with a Shakuhachi tuning? It is really cool though!
is it hard to blow in side blown flutes? i made one out of pvc pipe and it is hard at first to get a wistle is this how all flutes are at first or is it dificult becuase i made it out of pvc?
if you had listened carefully you would here that the flute he was holding in the beginning of the clip is a copy of the japanese flute (not sure if i spelled right) sakahaji
