mine went down a while back, my valve cam blew a bearing and wore into the head . it then overheated and streched the piston shaft, scored the cylinder and blew all the seals in the gear box. a new engine, cdi box, and a few small parts later, its about to run again. just waitin on a stator coil
That engine is in a relatively high state of tune for an air cooled motor. They're notorious for overheating when run hard, the cylinder head cracking between valves, dropping/cracking valve seats, and other ailments.
It was meant to be an offroad racer and won't last as long as a dual-sport or roadbike.
None of the competition machines tend to be long lasting, regardless of where or who's making it. I think the liquid cooled XR650R is the only exception, and even that has it's own issues.
Connecting Rod. It's the rod that holds the piston to the crankshaft. Sometimes they just break despite proper lubrication and care. Not much you can do about it unfortunately.
laraki - it was full of oil, and had been serviced just 3 days before, - so no stupidity involved - the only thing stuipid is ur comment and failure to read the ones below!
It had a hard life, ex race bike, then, hammered by a loony called Gunny, then hammered buy me, but I spent loads on servicing and oil, - age related.
I am a certified tech. Sometimes rods just let go, nothing you can do about it, it's just simple metal fatigue. Sorry to see this happen, I get buggered-up engines in the shop all the time, usually from a thrown rod; causes too much damage to save. :(
It had an oil change and filter change just 2 weeks before and I topped it up with oil just before going out that day!!! , yes, proper oil, not crap, and no it didn't "run forever"
How did it die? I've heard they're really reliable and am moving up to one next month but this is slightly worrying!! I have the xr125 (check my video) and it's never broken down and I ride it from devon to hertfordshire and back every couple of weeks and commute daily.. great bike!
Nah mate, got broken up, and sold for spares, got back what i paid for it :)
