Get to know your professors outside of the classroom and lecture hall. You'll be so sorry later if you don't. They can open doors nobody else can. A letter or two of recommendations from your professor can mean life and death to your career choices. Don't let a good librarian go to waste. They are an incredible asset. They can make what seems arduous into something exciting. Get to know them.
I hated administration in the early 80s(hated it), but I got a great career from the choices I made.
I was a student at college 8 in the early 80s. Pick your major carefully. Get the best advisor you can, if you aren't satisfied with the one you are assigned to, get someone else. If at all needed, find a good student assistant/tutor to help you with your term papers. USE YOUR LIBRARIANS. Can't stress that enough. They can do MARVELOUS things for you if you let them. Find one and talk a while. Not every professor here is terrific. Find the one's that are and skip the rest.
hee hee hee. "Different Perspectives." Hardly. It's a fascist/leftist place. Everyone thinks the same. The exact opposite of diversity. What a waste of air space.
If you don't find a great counselor, you may find yourself dropping out. Get a good one. Fire yours rather than stay with a bad one. And there ARE bad ones. Ask lots of questions and keep asking. You have to be assertive to do well. Get to know your professors. See them at their offices and get to know them. You'll need their letters of recommendation; something you might not get without putting some time into getting to know some faculty. Remember this, you are paying them.
Select your Professors VERY carefully. There are, as said here, world class programs... asn terrible as well. If you scout out the classes over the first week, pay close attention to what that class is going to be all about. Chances are, when you graduate you'll say 1/3 classes were fantastic, 1/3 boring and 1/3 just horrible.
Really, make sure you get a very good counselor. That too can make or break you.
I really want to go to ucsc anyone who is currently attending or got accepted for fall '11 could you please flll me in on what they look for and what I should focus on doing to increase my chances. Thank you so much i'll he a senior this fall.
sooo I have a 3.2 gpa and got a 2000 on my SAT. can i get in? my grades showed tons of improvement (4.0 second semester junior) and i have extracurriculars pouring out of every crevice
I'm a sophomore in high school right now and I'm not a California resident and my grades freshman year and first semester of sophomore year were terrible but I'm working really hard now and I really want to go to Santa Cruz. Do you think it's too late? Or if I keep working really hard and do really good the rest of my sophomore year and my junior and senior year I could maybe end up getting accepted? Thank you.
@CoreyL11 I'm an out of state student here in Florida and I was accepted UCSC looks great and I would say keep at it the most important year by far is junior year. The only problem is the out of state tuition which cost so much I want to go but at the moment I have no way to pay for it. Which is a dream killer but Like I said before keep at it and as Long as you stay involved in school activities and sports you'll most likely be accepted.
you should have a chance my grades were horrible even getting an F in a class and I got accepted into Santa Cruz. lol. but get ur SAT up mine was decent not too good but I guess that's what kind of saved it.
@Avatar831 haha, okay me too. well, first of all for me I wanted to go to USC, not UCSC. The fact that it is so close is one of the biggest pros and cons. I grew up in this area so nothing about it is really adventurous. But, I think YOU would like it....this place just isnt for me, im not a nature person and I need rain boots to get to class cause of how much forest paths are used to get to class.
Ya UCSC is a great place for the "Open minded individual".....As long as you're; intolerant to anything remotely conservative, patriotic, religious, civilly obedient, rational, heterosexual, or abstinent (including sex, drugs, alcohol). But if you're a spoiled rich liberal kid with a "I want to protest everything just for the sake of feeling self-righteous" attitude, it's a great college! And if you love doing drugs and fucking people like it's going out of style you should get a dorm in Porter!
@ninuchi UCSB is a party school besides Berkeley, if you really want to learn and be an environment such as UC Santa Cruz I would definitely go for it. UCSC is my top choice to transfer to
Born and raised in Santa Cruz & SC is grweat but I made the terrible mistake of choosing college 8. I chose to major in Environmental planning, but the counselor, a geology professor seeing I was female, told me to major in women's studies... what the ...? Attending UCSC without a counselor was a disaster. Miserable.
I studied Russian instead and became the International Studies Specialist of Slavic, East European, Central Asian and Baltic division at a much finer university

My best wishes to all those who will be attending UCSC. I graduated from there in the 1970s and it is a beautiful campus with lots to offer, especially to students who like independent study.

@aiptext umm to be honest man, i did fucking lame in high school, my gpa was a 3.0 exactly, this school really doesn't loook for gpas, it mainly looks for students who are out their and involved in their school. however, my sat was decent i guess, i got a 1800, and i participated in like a whole bunch of programs throughout high school: leadership, student government, soccer team, robotics team, math club, and a whole bunch of other clubs, it's easy to get in to be honest man

Only go to UCSC if your major is one of the majors most acclaimed. Not all professors are as informed as your middle-school teachers.

@imagineers0 I'm sure the undergrad experience for any ucsc student has drastically changed from 30 years ago
