@marseillaisdd well that is your opinion, if you think that you can do reviews better, then get a camera and respond to this vid with one of your reviews, cause i would like to see how well you do it. And by the way, your comment isnt really relevant to the topic at hand, this vid isnt about me
POP! POP! Not at all!!!! Dude so what if they want to do Led Zeppelin sounding music!!! If it wasnt for Led Zeppelin there wouldnt be metal bands like their are today drawing inspiration from them! No person that is a metalhead should talk shit about any bands like Zeppelin. No one!!
eh mastodon never really had a certain genre to stick to in the first place. crack the skye is living proof of that compared to songs from remission. this doesnt seem like a pop rock track to me, it reminds me of Sabbath in a few ways but only mixed with Mastodon's might. but i respect your opinion dude
"It is a good song by itself, but it is not a good mastodon song"
I get what you are saying but this song shows there real taste in music. During the making of crack the skye brent had made it known that he hates all the screaming that the band had been doing and hoped that they would go with a more groovy stoner rock proggy feel sometimes. thats this song. Also, whats wrong with trying to emulate led zepplin a little?
as for criticism, use a list to help you stay on point when talking.
Really I find the majority of metal listeners closed minded. Fuck, if a band.changes there sound we must crucify them. Bravo Mastodon for not stagnating!!s
If you'll notice, Mastodon have been getting progressively less heavy. There is no "what you'd expect" from Mastodon; each album is different, which is why its interesting to see what they do next.
u`re right. it is a great song, but not a great Mastodon song. Anyway most of the bands move on a path, so they don`t stay in a position. It`s a progress that is needed. For example lots of jazz musicians do the same stuff they did twenty years ago, and they kinda suck. So i am not disappointed if they do something that is far away from "remission". There is no way they can disappoint me > they are the MASTODON for God's sake! ;)
we can all have opinions, but we don't have to agree... and I don't. If you want mastodon to shout and scream at you listen to remission (witch is a good album) but not there best for me. I would say though that this is not mastodons best song but it is still of a very standard. with all there songs they need more than 1 listen I wasn't sure about black tongue but now I love it so give it a chance. mastodon are not going to keep doing the same thing so get used to it or get over it just listen.
i like it and i think that every band evolves at some point, but as a fan, its hard to convert from loving a progresive slugde metal band to mainstream comerical music. they need to stick to their roots
For the people who actualy pointed out your opinions and your insight to the song, i thank you, you have made exellent points on the song, but i still say its not their strongest song single thay put out. but as for the people who keep trying to insult me, i recommend that you get a life, and go back to your trolll cave.
You know I didn't say that it was a complete crap song. By itself it's a good song I've been playing the heck out of it, my point is that it's not a strong mastodon song so a lot of the original mastodon fans may not like it, thinking it's too pop/mainstream sounding.
@demonslayervirgil600 it seems kinda weird to call this one a left turn just because the album before this one was crack the skye...a much spacier cd than blood mountain or leviathan. I actually think there might even be a little Remission in the released tracks so far...
@palmerpoop and this is all that should be said, can't think of how many times I've heard Brann say this in interviews. Love it or hate it the evolution of Mastodon continues, and I for one love it.
@RIVURSTIX666 Precisely, it took me a while to come to terms with Curl of the Burl. I had to listen to the song at least 50 times to properly digest it. And the truth is Black Tongue isn't that much different from their older work too. So the album could be a surprising mixture. I think the reviewer has looked to far into this song. :-)
I was definately hoping for something more like crack the sky so I'm disappointed in that regard. I wish it was more trippy and edgy like some of their previous music
It sounds like CKY (which is not a good thing). I think every good band that we like to keep in our back pockets will eventually come out with a record like this eventually, once they get big enough... People are right, Mastodon is always evolving, and evidently they're evolving into MTV/radio jargon.
@MetalBassist1000 crack the skye still had a sense of brutality and haunting sound to it, and crack the skye had way more complex riffs and drumming than this. Not only that but the vocal range on CTS was wider than this as well.
@demonslayervirgil600 dude chill your drawing assumptions and making yourself look like a close minded douche because your judging an entire album on two songs. This is Mastodon the same old mastodon ive been listening to since remission whether you like it or not. But your entitled to your opinion
@MetalBassist1000 i didnt mention anything about the album, im still getting the limited edition, im just saying by the sound of these two singles, they are going mainstream pop.
@demonslayervirgil600 Mainstream Prog.....is that a bad thing? would you rather the masses listen to lil wayne? or Mastodon? reaching a broader audience is not a bad thing
@MetalBassist1000 im not saying its a total bad thing either. getting to a wider audience is good and all, but there is a yin and yang effect to it, some of the old fans of mastodon who started listening from day one will feel alienated by the new direction. Mastodon had the ability to go from remission to crack the skye because they were still able to produce the same feeling from day one, feeling like your on a journey while being brutal with drums and haunting with vocals and guitar
@demonslayervirgil600 Well Im still getting the same feeling from their new stuff as I did with their old stuff....Suffice to say I cant wait to hear the album
@MetalBassist1000 hey that's cool man, i personally can still listen to the song and enjoy it, but since i started listening to mastodon around the Leviathan album, it was a bit alienating to me, so yeah.
Mastodon evolves. They have a broad spectrum of heavy music. Judge it for what it is, not has been done. For all we know this could be the lighter end of the album. Song sounds good. Can't wait for the rest.
Nothing that Mastodon does sounds like their earlier works. And saying that Mastodon "screams to your face" clearly shows that you haven't listened to their last three albums. Song is good, sounds like Mastodon and is clearly not pop.
@guitarbassist95 I actualy have heard the past three albums, and most of the songs, even on Crack the skye, they have had screaming in their songs. All im saying is that what they did with this song is major departure from their original material. Also i didnt say it was a bad song, im just saying its not a good mastodon song.
@demonslayervirgil600 Which pretty much means it's a bad song. I mean no offense to you and I mean not to troll or anything, it's your opinion and I appreciate it, but I think It's a fine Mastodon song. I agree that's It sounds far worse than tracks like colony of birchmen, divinations or march of the fire ants, but it's still a pretty strong single. I liked Black Tongue better, and I hope the rest of the album will sound like it, but this is not a bad song.
My greatest hope is that this just happens to be a very polished, very approachable, palatable song from a proggy, rifftastic album. Like you said, the song is not bad in and of itself, it's just a poor example of the mind-alteringly complex songwriting and musical craftsmanship for which Mastodon have become legendary.
Dude, you suck. And you look like shit.
