Wow!!!! this white boy here really likes this, why I did,nt hear him back in the seventies? This guy was underated¬ given more attention&respect as other black artist.
I remember this like it was last week. None of today's black music can touch this. I'm 55 and white, a classic rocker, but this along with many, many other black artist's of the 60's/70's lives on in my memory. Scott-Heron, Wonder, Mayfield, SlyStone, IsaacHayes, etc., all had that urban vibe goin' on. I hope they play this stuff in heaven, because I'd hate like hell to leave it all behind. To my brother's: Listen to some EARLY "Chicago", jazzy, bluesy, soulful classic rock with the same message
@H1wyStr excellent taste in music...there is room in all of our ipods ofr multiple genres and you are evidence that diversity in music brings us all closer...thanks!
mygod where is he we are surrounded by gyrating self absorbed idiots but hey I still remember sitting on those hills in Berkeley and listening to his concerts we stood up we demonstrated and all over the world today others are making a stand
The Hollywood Jews can never be forgivin for releasing the virus of Jew-created Rap and hip-Hop in order to destroy black music, culture, family and future and turn black music into an international commodity of crime and depravity to be used as a weapon by the new world order to destroy societies around the world.
As a 77 year old disabled veteran I still find Gil and his songs so relevant today. Gil is simply the best there is. I have listened to him all my life.
OH MY WORD,the man is singing the heck out of this song, go baby, wish I could have met this legend, maybe in the new world, his music just touches you in a way no other music can, sing that song.
Gil was a man of vision and a revolutionary! I can't believe some of these post? This music he set out to make we as Black people want to change our lives for the better to move forward. He did fall to the ways of wickedness in America, but that does not take away his mind and conscious effort to bring truth to us all! He impacted millions and that should never be forgotten. In term of this type of message in the music now, it is being blocked and we the people have to demand it for our youth!
@roburrage I disagree, no music in america is being blocled and it would be difficult to do so. With so many social media, blogs, free music offerings and other ways to make a message public, the Internet ensures NOTHING is being blocked.
I do agree that Gil Scott was a visionary and a pioneer. If he were in his productive years today he would be a superstar!
And the detractors here do so out of ignorance...nothing else - and so deserve our pity - not our scorn.
@11918239 I'm sorry but being in the industry there is a lot of music and artist that have been (more so then now) and are still being blocked. If you don't believe that I am sorry, but I know it first hand. I am not looking to get into long debates or arguments going now where, but whom ever you are I don't believe you are in the industry. Yes there are several means net, web, but they too are monitored and if you are current it is clear evidence as it soon may not be open or free.
Wait! Wait! Wait! Stop!! Doesn't he mean 2011??? History repeats as the profane take advantage and allow the prophets to prosper. To acquit yourself by accusing a man of being a lazy paranoid revolutionary...anger is the one true incorruptible emotion. It separates us from those animals and it's power should never be underestimated. History says so.
Brother Gil Had vision and insight and Truth of Heart but not piece of mind Listen to the drummers military cadence in this song that of a 2nd line funeral march and it was purposly done that way to show the slow desinacration of our society and our removal of our spirit
This is simply amazing. I was on a plane from Rome yesterday and heard this on the jazz channel. It knocked me out. This nation can't stand much more; the Constitution - a noble piece of paper. OMG, as they say. Ain't nobody fighting 'cuz nobody knows what to say...
I didn't know he passed! Last I knew he was in some upstate jail for posession -- the Rockefeller drug laws victimized him, at least that was the pretense the authorities used to attack this revolutionary. The live version is incredible, too. The Nixon years were even worse than the Bush years.
Rest in heavenly peace brother...you were the voice of the voiceless, deploring and not glorifying the daily horror of life in the ghetto, unlike the punks who came after you glorifying and trivializing the violence, drugs, alcohol and brutality of life with the excuse of just trying to "get paid." You never received Grammy Awards or million dollar contracts, but you earned your rightful place in the hearts of those whose sanity was preserved by listening to your words.

I used to crave this man. I saw him at the Bijou Cafe in Philly. I didn't know he was HIV positive until about a year ago. I'm sorry to hear about that. He was a good looking man.
@lizwisler11 i'm guessing you are very young & possibly very white. the point is, he was creating music of his era, funk & soul based sounds, combined with strong social based lyrics that were delivered in manner of of spoken word poet as much as a singer. that pointed the way toward rap or hip hop. but history is not simply linear, this guy was creating something new, that effected an audience, who then responded & one of those responses was extension of what he was doing, ie rap
NOT UNDER THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE ULTIMATE LIAR BARRACK OSAMA I MEANT OBAMA .. WHO NOW EATS FRIED CHICKEN ,WATERMELON AND COLLARD GREENS,SINGING KUMBAYA WHILE SHOOTING HOOPS AFTERWARD WITH AL SHARPTON.... AS OF 4/11 READ IN THE PAPER I AM BLACK LIBERAL FEMALE SENIOR CITIZEN
gil scott-heron could musically verbalize the emotions that we feel with his songs because he never, ever stopped being one of us even when he reached fame. I will always love this man.
As a 54 yr old fan of Gil Scott-Heron, I have definately been influenced by this great poet. I pledged Kappa Alpha Psi at Lincoln University in 1976 (attended West Chester University about 15 miles away). He was then and is still a legend there.
I have been layed off many times since I have been a working adult. Now, I truly understand the lyrics to "Pieces of A Man". RIP good brother.
I'm 48 & grew up listening to Gil Scott-Heron. I love reading comments from the younger folks who have come to know and love the music from back in the day. This is my favorute G S-H song. R.I.P. Gil.
I remember wearing this lp out back in 74-75. And we thought it was winter in America then! Then came Reagan & more reagan & bush & all this endless war bullshit. Perpetual winter in america. If you want to honour this GIANT MANs memory, then start getting it on in the USA, taking it to the man just like the brave brave brothas & sistas are doing in Tunisia, Egypt, Palestine, Bahrain, Spain. Revolution today, USA. Long overdue. See you all on the barricades
@elps84 I feel you. discovering this Brother in the early 70s was an epiphany for me. His brilliance and ability to express himself musically is unsurpassed. Thanks, Gil Scott-Heron!!!!
Word @elps84!! I couldn't agree more with what you said... and I'm not a citizen of the US but "we got to save the children" as this prophet said... keep spreading that truly democratic posture! Congratulations and blessings.
I'm just so glad that my Grandfather schooled me on Mr.Gil Scott-Heron because I have been listening to him him for atleast 9 years now and I'm 20.
Many of you just don't know what you have been missing. He made deep music that caused one to reflect and music should also be made to teach or enlighten listeners.
THANK YOU GIL. Your music, poetry and ideology escorted me from adolescence into manhood. Your rhythms provided a background for my early development. Thanks for leaving BIG footprints in this thing we call life. Thanks for helping to wake up black America and serving notice to white America. I only hope that your death re-awaken the social conscience of America and help to renew the absolute hunger for cultural knowledge that's desperately needed amongst our people....................THANKS GIL
Like so many others, I just found out about Mr. Scott and after hearing a few of his pieces, he was brilliant!! Just think, his work was done some 40yrs ago and yet it still rings true in 2011! Sad but true. Not only was he a poet, he was a prophet.
@OMG100ism may i say this to you OMG100, be glad that you have heard of him today, we only have the moment...be happy to hear this great man's work in the present day...yes i agree it is still 'winter in america'! i was a teen when gil scott-heron/brian jackson made this song..i saw him LIVE in boston years later and he rocked ...as the young folks say! (smile)
Respond to this video... rest in peace brother gil scott~heron... tears for in my eyes when i hear this song..it speaks to your soul whomever and wherever you may be at the time you hear this song...
Com' on, young folk . . . show us Forerunners of Gil's Untelevised Revolution whatchu workin' wit! Spit sumptin' real . . . we listenin' ;o) (go check out his poetry, WINTER IN AMERICA). Each of his songs started as a poem. Get his book of poetry.
Com' on, young folk . . . show us Ol' Skool Students of Gil's untelevised revolution whatchu workin' wit! Spit sumptin' real . . . I'm listenin' ;o) (go check out his poetry, WINTER IN AMERICA). Each of his songs started as a poem. Get his book of poetry.
the late great RIP brother gil scott, down the road with the prophets that have been wiped away before you and before your time, thank you for your work and for your memories, like an angel dust, flying away
Can we really say his messages went un heeded? Took me a while. I finally straightened up my act. Few more speed bumps to go. Thanks to brothers like Gil reminding us the 'Revolution' starts in your own mind.
SuperXavier- you did lose a close friend. We all did.. Gil was more then a poet- he was a Prophet and he came to warn us all, but like all of those who went before him, his warnings went unheeded. . I read a tweet that said " RIP GIl, I didn't know you, but it seems you knew us all"....
haunting piece , born as he was in such troubled times , no change without the pain , he gave us all a continuous heads up he seen everytin god bless u blud, n thanks for ALL u works respec
This is one of his most beautiful pieces. I remember listening to him as a very young person. To think he was only about 25 years old when he thought of these lyrics, what a genius!!
@theniecygirl he was the chosen one to let us know .god was speaking through him at a very young age how could he foresight and make predictions .he was gifted.
Gil Scott-Heron died yesterday?? Why the hell wasn't it on the news? THis guy is an ICON>> OF AMERICAN SOUL>>> OF THE AMERICAN SOUL/SPIRIT, .. May he be Blessed
He will always be with us!............An aware conscientious spirt sending information to the unobservant.....God bless him and may he rest, knowing we will carry on his thoughtfulness!
R.I.P. GSH the only word I can say is like Joe Strummer, Curtis Mayfield, Nina Simone they were my teachers and I developed my sense of right and wrong and intellectual curiousty from these griots. TRAVEL WELL TO THE ANCESTORS GIL SCOTT HERON.
thou I have only listened to his music now and never heard of him before today , it seems to me he had a vary difficult life in this percutory of ours, I hope he found a renewed life in a much more peaceful place.
I had the great priviledge to see him perform twice at Cornell in Ithaca, NY, in the mid- 70's. He was a superb poet and performer. It is so sad that he never reached the heights that he should have. His drug addiction simply crushed him. I am so sad right now as I listen to "Winter in America". RIP

I used to crave this man. I saw him at the Bijou Cafe in Philly. I didn't know he was HIV positive until about a year ago. I'm sorry to hear about that. He was a good looking man.

@lizwisler11 THANK YOU !!!!

RIP
