It was a reference to Angeal when he says to Zack that his life is "just a little" more important than his sword. Of course taken literally, Sephiroth has become a little overcooked on the sides as the FF series has continued on, warping his role and image. Likewise, Zack could have been represented as a more mature character in Crisis Core to reflect what he was known as in FF7. I believe the same can be said about Cloud Strife.
