I was a college student extra in a MGD commercial filmed via helicopter the year before this in Panama City. We were all on the beach doing various activities when a huge beer bottle was suddenly to appear in the sand (digitally via post production) - we stopped what we were doing and slowly walked towards the bottle. Cool experience. Although, cold for us as well. We hid winter coats under our beach towels and put them on between takes. Went to Italy that summer and never did see it on air. :0(
Great commercial, remember it well from early 90's sports. Any idea who the woman is, she's very distinctive looking, but don't think I've seen her in anything else.
I, Michael Ciranni, created this commercial with my writer, Walt Bishop, while working at Backer Spielvogel advertising. (No, not the Walter Bishop from Fringe!) It was shot in Panama City, Fla in October. The first day of the shoot was a cold 47 degrees. The heat waves were made with flames in front of the camera lens. Extras (local college students) walked off the shoot because it was too cold. The last scene on the island was shot on a sandbar which was then retouched to look smaller.
@stt2399: Thanks for sharing. It's an effective commercial -- I know that when I found it on VHS tape a few months ago I remembered this ad rather well.
@stt2399 I worked for WJHG TV7 in Panama City at the time and was a hired local to work on the project. I was working Craft Services and busted my butt so hard that I started working as an extra Grip I think it was called. It was a cold October and I remeber joking about working band-aid patrol for all the youg girls and the misting we did to make it look hot. We used those small party barges to carry equipment out the sand bar of Tyndell Air Force base for the last shots.
@jjcotton07 That's right! Do you also remember the fighter jets taking off in pairs every few minutes from the Air Force Base. I think the country was on high alert at the time.
By the way, this commercial broke new ground for The Miller Brewing Company. It was the first time they let any of their brands feature a woman in a two piece swimsuit. That's the truth.
@stt2399 Tyndell is a very active Air Force Base still. I left Panama City the next year to go back to college but I still go over there every October for a Biker Rally. Most of the beach shots were done in Sea Side which is where The Truman Show was shot. I thought we would sink a boat moving the crane and weights to the sand bar. I have a copy of the story board put away along with one of the color corrected bottles. To this day I won't drink MGD because of that week.
@kirbyhero77 I don't remember her name. I think it was the first commercial she did. She also did posters for MGD. I have a whole box of them years ago and gave them out to friends. Here's a bit of Miller trivia-this commercial was the first one that the Miller Brewing Company let a woman wear a two piece swimsuit in!

Victorian homes. I never kept my storyboards or preproduction books. The storyboard drawings were actually drawn by me.

@stt2399 Who was the model? I believe she was in other Miller ads at the time.
