  • People forget what an artist Mcenroe was - truly one of the greatest natural talents ever.

  • Great idea by Lendl to take a bathroom break during this incident and avoid getting wrapped up in the controversy.

  • Why no using Hawk Eye @ 2:00??? Lol just kidding, i think every average club player from today would destroys these both players....rite?

  • @slatz20

Are you kidding? You must be kidding...

  • @slatz20 yeah. no. lets see you use those wooden racquets lol... If these players were around today, the game would be much more diverse.

  • @TheDrowsyMadcap Those weren't wooden racquets

  • @slatz20 You're stupid... even at their ages today (50+) they would destroy any club player

  • @ARTZY64 hahahahah sure

  • @slatz20 You don't even play tennis. Troll.

  • mcenroe was right, the ball was out

  • that was out fuckk the reff

  • To be fair to Mcenroe, the umpire should have atleast went and checked the mark to confirm.

  • @sskgrs exactly, this time it really is the umpire who broke the rules

  • People smoking cigarets and flicking ashes on the court @ 3:20. WOW!

  • @BartsBeatz LOL I don't smoke and I want to do that now.

  • @BartsBeatz Pure freeeedom at these days hehehe

  • The pack of rabid French fucktards carry on for 5 mins, then they go "shhhhhhh" during the rally.

  • lol. Damn, McEnroe looks like a girl with that skirt.

  • @kojiro99999 You're a moron. The shorts players wear today look much worse.

  • @Nigelxman1 Lol can't really say that bro, there are different opinions. Don't call anyone moron when you don't have the right.

  • @kojiro99999 I don't have the "RIGHT" to call someone a moron? lol. Dude, what fucking backwards country are you living in to have a complete lack of free speech? :-) Just chill bro. Go take another bong hit and go hit the courts.

  • that was CLEARLY out!!

  • a mule could see that shot was out. lendl took a huge swing (didn't need to) and he knew it was out. oh mr. ump i need to take a break. haha. and the other one was in and ivan knew it as well. could tell by his body language. who won this match anyway? i think that wilander won it that year. he 5th set bageled agassi in the semis.

  • Leave it up to the frogs. SCUM!

  • Hawkeye wouldn't help, as clay is clay (they don't use Hawkeye as you can check marks). What hasn't changed in 20 years is of course the Roland Garros crowd getting over the top with their reactions and taking over. This to me is boorish behaviour and selfish and childish all at once.

  • Nice to see two players not toweling themselves off after every f***ing point!

  • the guy in the background havein a smoke at 5:00

  • McEnroe is awesome

  • Tennis is different, but French spectators keep being the same...

  • I love the ladies sitting at court level smoking and ashing right on to the court

  • @nikemac84

Nadal and federer would have killed all of them put together!

  • @Joeylink123pro - Not a fair comparison the technology is totally different .

  • hey, I agree with Akrivas!

Hawk Eye would have been nice in this era of tennis. Thank Goodness they use it today.

  • Could you imagine a player today wearing a sweater vest?

  • @keevon8u

    No lol.

  • I am VERY cynical about today's tennis, where all but 2 dominate ALMOST every competition... Sure, FEDERER AND NADAL are incredible players...but if you put these 2 guys on court 20 years ago, they WOULD NOT have the same success!!! Do you know who were playing in 1990???>>> BECKER, EDBERG, AGASSI, MAC,SAMPRAS, CHANG, LENDL,COURIER, WILANDER, IVANISEVIC, STICH, CONNORS...Let's see how many GRAND SLAMS and FRENCH OPENS FEDERER AND NADAL would have won...Damn, I miss those days>>>

  • yeah mcenroe was right on both occasions, but wasn't it great with the crowd taking the piss out of him.hes still a discrace to the sport but its funny when hes right & gets his ass bitten.

  • @kadaitcha72 I think the fans are on his side here though. They're jeering the umpire.

  • Mc enroe is God!

  • The other baseline umpire who make a mistake at 5-3 was Stephane Guénin.

  • Benjamin Rassat make a famous movie on this match. Philippe Fougere was umpire on this baseline. Fougere said McEnroe show the wrong mark. This ball was on the line. Fougere also said he hoped that Kaufmann ask him to show the right mark. in french, Fougere said : "Je me souviens bien de ce point car j'ai cru que le public allait m'agresser.

  • P.S. If this match had been held in Cleveland the fans would have started throwing bottles onto the court! (hee, hee)

  • McEnroe is correct here but he's like the boy who cried wolf, he just made an ass of himself too many times throughout his career to be taken seriously even when his call was the right one. If he had only blown up rarely he would have had more credibility those times when he was in the right.

  • Everything here tends to prove that McEnroe is right:

    - Umpire wouldn't check the mark

    - People right behind the line umpire clearly disagree with the decision

    - Lendl suddenly goes to take a dump

So he gets robbed twice in the tie break (and was leading 7/6, 6/6 at that moment of the match, which also explains the crowd reaction).

McEnroe almost remains calm compared to usual. At 8'45, he has the right arrogance, then wins the next point in style. La classe!

  • the french are wankers, always were and will be as a tennis crowd. They think they are superior to the rest. This is what true tenis used to be before it screwed up with modern reackets and boring players except for Nadal and Federer. Long live Sampras.imo

  • Lendl sees what's coming and takes the chance to go and take a dump.

  • love it super mac!!!!!

  • like, the best thing mcenroe could have done was junst hitting the umpire with the ball. right in the face!

  • how the hell umpire doesnt go down to check the mark. Its the easiest thing to do on clay in the tennis world.

  • the french crowd makes me laugh. They hold up play so much with noise and mexican waves and then they moan when play has to be suspended for the day because it gotten too dark.

  • the french crowd is too noisy.

  • OOOUUUAAAAAA MDR !!!

  • I like the French... they don't seem to bow down to authority when in the right. Or perhaps its that the French just appreciate unique artistry. Perhaps both. Nice.

  • Lendl to Mac....."i need to use the can....mind doing 4 mins routine with the ump?"

    Sure no prob.

  • A lot of people seem to forget how long Lendl dominated for...

  • Bloody out alright!!!!!!!!!

  • Ah the days of REAL tennis and not this PING PONG mess they play now. The powers that be have so manipulated the game of tennis by slowing the courts, and the balls, that they have affectively eliminated attacking tennis. Now EVERYBODY plays the Women's game, and the Men are NOT as compelling playing that type of tennis. I mean, Rafa wins on GRASS? The ball BOUNCES that high? Its terrible. Bring back the options and contrast of the attacking game. (singing) "Where have you gone John McEnroe"

  • @davidh151 Hey, Borg won 5 straight Wimbys on GRASS

  • John is trying to hold it together here, and I give him props for that. But check out the French woman flicking her cigarette ashes on the court. Classy.

  • mc enroe was a great player and a spoiled little brat

  • i hope that after this match, the ump realized his pigheaded error and started drinking and died of a slow excruciating heart attack... and in that moment, as he lay clenching his chest in agony, he thought about the selfish stubborn bullshit he put other human beings through in his lifetime... and then drifted into the universal gaping void of nothingness... having never come close to leaving any kind of indelible mark on humanity the way that johnny mac did.

  • The look on Lendl's face at 9:15 is priceless. Translated into spoken word it means: "I don't give a fuck what you assholes think, and I especially don't give a toss about you, you spoiled little Long Island brat. I am a warrior, and I will terminate you with extreme prejudice."

  • was that Richard Kaufmann? Him and McEnroe always fought.

  • This was the golden age of tennis! Drama, emotion, tantrums and pure tennis. You gotta love the crowds pantomime jeers to Mc Enroes outburst and the way he interacts with the crowd - they were putty in his hands.

  • lionhunter43, I don't agree at all with you. I do not see the logic behind women earning just as much as men. How often will you see 182 games in a ladies match ? And how often do ladies ever play 5-set matches ? Tennis has been hijacked by the women's libbers, the proof : your idiotic message. If ladies want to earn big prize money, they should work for it, like the men.

  • The referee is really stupid! he can go and fuck himself!

  • Bad umpiring, if a player asked him to look at the mark then surely its the umpire's duty to point to the "correct" mark even if the umpire is 100% convinced he knows where the ball landed. On a clay court it is easy to see that the ball is in or out even at full speed. Glad the game has changed with the hawkeye being brought in, but also umpiring has gotten alot better. Now all we need is technology in football.

  • WE are such a good crowd ^^

  • I grew up in communist Czechoslovakia, and I can certainly associate with Ivan Lendl. In the 80's it was not easy to be Ivan Lendl. He was hated in Czechoslovakia, he was hated in the West. He was persona non grata everywhere. And he still managed to be #1 in the world!!! Not easy task to achieve. I'll remain his fan forever.

  • @S6666M Why did they hate him in Czech? Was it due to the fact he defected?

  • @S6666M thats too bad, lendl was a great player. why was he hated in czechoslovakia?

  • This is a classic trick that guys like Gilbert explained in their book. Whenever a Lendl or a McEnroe were playing bad and losing, they would intentionally stoke a giant shit storm and slow EVERYTHING DOWN to a crawl. Mac had no real issue with the point, the issue was in trying to upset his opponent by stopping the rush of winners.

  • @kegsterino12 not really. Mac was taken a point away before in this tie break and on the last point the referee could have at least gone and take a look at the marks. Mac was right making a case for it.

  • Ivan Lendl was John McEnroe worst nightmare on the Tennis court and Lendl loved to piss him off too.

  • omg so happy theres hawk eye nowadays

  • @solopiece. There is no hawk eye at the French because of the mark on clay.

  • I know, read my comment carefully. I said if he had taken care of business 4 years ago....

Also the '79 U.S. Open final is online in B&W. It's pretty cool watching Mac & his friend Vitas go at it.

  • Dear Ivan Lendl all the best for your 50th birthday!

  • If only Mac had been so cool as Lendl...

And Lendl a bit more aggressive...

  • Mac´s volley was in !

  • This time I believe Mac was right on two counts:

    1. I think the ball was out.

    2. They should have checked the mark

But of course if Mac had taken care of his bitness 4 years earlier it wouldn't have mattered quite so much :(

  • @KingCast65

No this is 1988 not '84 when mac sucked and was pretty much out of the top 10 and Lendl was now the big cock on the block

  • Mac "tanked" @ the 84 French Open.....

    probably his biggest regret.

    otherwise, Mac DOMINATED in 1984.

do you know his win/loss stats for that year?

Mac did NOT "suck" in 1984.

it was the best year of his entire career.

  • @ZebZachary

No, I meant Mac sucked in '88 when this vid took place, he was'nt in the top ten. Mac was almost unbeatable in '84 at 83-2 only losing to Lendl in the French and Vijay Amritaraj in Cinncinati in Master Series before the Us Open '84. That win loss record still holds as the best single season record percentage for a tennis player though Roger Federer came close in '05 or '06 don't remember at 83-3

  • Tanking is when you deliberatley lose points or games to get the set or game over with... "choking" is closer to what John did at the 84 French,

  • Get the fuck off your fat arse and LOOK AT THE MARK!! That sucks man. I understand how McEnroe would get pissed by that.

  • @SpruikerSlayer

Did the judge finally give the decision (about the ball being out) to MacEnroe?

  • McEnroe the King...........of crybabies.

  • Y tú eres el rey de WEONES....you are the king of asshole

  • McEnroe was right

  • he actually looks alot like andy murray haha

  • @itachi46

    Vice versa.

  • 99% of his complaints was actually right

  • I remember watching the match. It was extremly close, which just tells you how good Mcenroe was. He was on a bad, slow surface, playing the best player in the workd, and he still camvery cklose to wining. Mcenroe understood how to work a point, fight hard and win better than anoyne else.

  • Lendl was not the best player in this year, it was Mac, Lendl possibly was Nr 1 in that week. Mac only lost 2 or 3 matches in 1984, and one of those was this one in Paris.

  • oops, sorry mistake. I thought it was the match of 1984....

  • I have a DVD of this match and I can't tell whether that ball was out.

  • @krosero

if you have this match, please post it !

would love to see the entire match.

  • Great to see this without television commentators, you can hear the entire argument.

  • is a chair umpire allowed to refuse to look at a mark when a player requests it? This was a claycourt, it clearly makes a mark when the ball lands. Does anyone know the exact rules regarding this?

  • excellent point.

i also wonder if the rules concerning an issue like that have changed at all since this match.

  • I do not know the exact rules regarding this issue, but back then in the 80s it was not as common as today that an umpire came down to check a mark. You can watch it here and there are also many other examples, i. e. during the 1984 final Lendl vs. McEnroe the umpire did not leave his chair once, although requested several times by both players. They tended to ask their linespeople to check the mark instead of themselves. But nowadays it could be that they HAVE to check it themselves.

  • the umpire can refuse if he thinks the call was correct. In this case, I can't understand why he wouildn't just go look at it, or at least have the other official look at it

  • Linesmand and women are fucking assholes. That ball was out, fuck them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • McEnroe's ONLY purpose for delaying the game was to upset Lendl's hot streak.

It wasn't about the call - it was about pissing off Lendl SOOO much that he has a shot at some cheap points. it works time and time and time again.

  • I bet the umpire was worrying that Lendl might have to leave the court to do another turd.

  • another example of how awful the FO crowd is.

  • This is one of the rare ones i have never seen before, ive always wondered why these things always happen to him, maybe he was just unlucky?

  • lol lendl's shot was clearly in, and his shot was also out by my eyes

no point arguing, no hawkeye back then, he really shouldn't be a big bitch about it everytime, other players have the courtesey and dignity to just win by sucking it up and proving they can overcome unfairness at times.

  • He still does this stuff now on the veterans tour, it's all part of the act though now, the crowd love it

  • i actually enjoy it sometimes, it's funny and exciting, but i can find it annoying at times, when the game matters more.

  • well, u have to understand how Mac was raised.....to stand up for yourself when u think u've been wronged.....

perhaps an Irish Catholic thing.....i'm not sure....but in Mac's book, he explains that he was raised to stand up for himself.

  • well his dad was alawyer, so he certainly knew how to argue

  • What a difference 20 years makes. Today you have Hawk Eye, smoking is banned on courts, and the umpires are being watched carefully. Oh, and ladies' players are grossly overpaid, and men hopelessly underpaid.

  • @cytotoxix. Men's tennis is boring without Fed. Can you honestly tell me that you can watch a men's tennis match without Roger? Anybody who plays Roger, deserves to be paid. I rather watch a sloppy Williams sisters match because they play like raging alcoholics during a board meeting or at the dinner table.

  • are you kidding me? Women have only got the SAME amount of prize money at Wimbledon in 2007, it took 130 years for women to ever(!) get the same prize money as men @cytotoxix

  • french crowds suck

  • LBHE. (life Before Hawk Eye) was crazy

  • That umpire fucking sucks

  • lol @ 3:20 the chick flicking her cigarette ash on the court

  • jajajajaja...

  • why does ppl in the past kept using serve and volley tactic...its like so predictable

  • the the balls were lighter and the courts off the clay were faster, it was the easiest and quickest way to win a point

  • actually the tactic is just the opposite of

    "predictable".....in my opinion.

McEnroe made an entire career out of it.

    so.....it must've been quite effective.

    wait....it was !!

i hate to see that the tactic is virtually dead .....these days, though.

  • It's good to have variety. Too much serve and volleying made the game so boring. Wimbledon used to be mega boring with Sampras, Krajicek and Ivanisevic blasting aces and volleying all the time. A good match is a baseliner vs a serve volleyer.

  • i agree with you

  • Now you know why Mac was paranoid bout the Chair Umpire..... Because some of them are PATHETIC! I think the recent incident with Serena has sparked interest in 1980's McEnroes Tantrums because I just see big time Hits on McEnroe video clips.

  • les français l aime et ces pas étonnant ! on dirait meme une pure attitude francise ! john tes un dieu !

  • I don't like McEnroe much.. but he's got a point there - no pun intended - the umpire could have double checked.. perhaps he was afraid of the reaction of this horrible crowd hahaha.. wtf are they whisteling for??

  • they are booing.

  • that was out Mac was such a jerk

  • your mama's a jerk bi-otch...J mac was right..not wrong...

  • where is hawk eye lol

  • this reminds me of the movie gladiator when mcenroe has his hands in the air while the crowd is chanting his name--ha especially on the clay

  • in a way, mcenroe is in right, because if i ask the umpire to check the mark i've seen, he has to check in all way and then choose, if the ball was in or not.

  • It was probably out, but seriously he was being a crybaby about it. Every player gets bad calls at times and most just let it go. It's not always about being right.

  • This video's awesome. Without the announcer's voice or any other commentary, it was like being in the crowd and watching it myself. How did you get the video without commentary?

  • The reason why the umpire Richard Kaufman, by the way a very famous umpire back then, did not come down from his chair to check the mark was that umpires, as a contrast to today, did not do this quite often back then. But at least he could have ordered his linesman to go and check the mark.

  • Mac looked like Bill Nye.

Anyway, I'm glad that Chang owned Lendl for Mac in 89!

  • I like Ivan Lendl, yeah !!!

    The very 1st professionnal player.

  • this was a turning point in the match. Had Mcenroe won this. He prob would've taken the match.

  • looked like it hit the line to me

  • i hope tat umpire dies in hell

  • that's why he was the host of "the chair"

  • i hate the french crowd so much

  • @kusta678 Fuck you Kusta

  • legendary

  • That ball was miles out! If they had that cam technology of today McEnroe wud hav won more titles.

  • Not on clay. Even with today's tech, Mac would have used his challenges just to argue with the ump.

  • No, he had his angre as part of his strategy, he wouldnt had won many matches without his battles and fury

  • how can i see shit with this quality

  • 6.29 slo-mo. That ball was well and truly in and Johnny knows it. He just had to have a spaz-out because he knows he has no answer to that class of clay-court forehand. It was not his best surface and it really told on his impatient temperament and overall lack of conditioning.

  • dude no one can tell shit from this video xD You had to be there (not that i dont think it was in or out) but the ref really should've got off his lazy ass to see. John didn't even get so much as pissed this time.

  • Lendl had such a great forehand...

  • Both McEnroe and Lendl took endless time before they started their service motion. That was one reason why they played so many long matches of 5 or 6 hours. Nadal or Djokovic are nothing compared to this.

  • Mac, the best ever. And you know what, most of the time he was right on his complaints to umpires. Just see the videos. With the cam these days, he would get most of those lost points back. And yes, he was entertaining and good. Not like today's chaps playing. So boring.

  • lol funny guy

  • I liked watching Lendl playing, then only problem was serving, it would take him forever to serve lol.

  • french crowd is horrible...

  • McEnroe was right. It was too important a point not to at least check the mark.

  • Ach, it was total gamesmanship. They all did it...

  • That ball was out

  • These guys are awsome.

  • the question jerk...the question lmao :p

  • McEnroe was SUCH a ruddy-faced, punk-@ss, really.

He should have been peeling potatoes in the kitchen at night doing KP as "good-training", to keep him EXTRA cranky for the next day/match due to poor nutrition, lack of sleep, jet-lag.

    Got WORKED here!!!

    John...you're only dancing...

    ; )

  • He was a great entertainer, he made Tennis a little less boring, and he was a great player too.

  • lendl was fuckin awesome. not only did he have the best power game, but most importantly had the best cutome designed shirts. you gotta look good too

  • Mac only argued calls for one reason: to upset his opponent's momentum whenever he was in danger of losing. However, he would never employ that tactic against Bjorn Borg, the only player he ever respected.

  • you "stupid, moronic jerk"! - if you get cheated 2 times in a tie breaker, in ways like these, let me know about your reasons!

  • how the hell did they not ban smoking yet? The players dont complain in the 80's about breathing or odor problems?

  • fuck these retard americans!

  • R U fucking french?

  • im a rothschild.

  • I think John was right. That ball seems really out to me
