For the $ this is a good knife. Is it as good as delica? Hell no, but it's 1/3 of the price. This is a great knife to buy and use ruthlessly and not care what happens to it.
The lock back safety bit is CRKTs way of preventing you closing the lock when you squeeze the knife hard. Spyderco has the Boye detent, Cold Steel has the especially deep lock travel on their Triad locks, CRKT has the LBS. Necessary? Who knows, but there are three companies that do it.
Bought one. clip screws pulled out just carrying it. Blade dulls very very quickly. The lock safety very gimicky and activates in the pocket. Gotta fiddle with it if you want to or not. Dont recomend it.
Sorry Nutn, normally I agree with you but this knife is TERRIBLE. Worst blade play I have ever seen on a blade (yes I am aware of how to adjust pivot) and very bad deployment speed on mine. I will be contacting CRKT on this and will update this comment if needed but for right now I would tell TNP'ers to save their money and spend it on countless other options that Nutn has given.
@timberland1108 I bought mine off of Amazon. Amazom seem to have some of the harder to find stuff out there. I love it it works great and it is with me now.
don't get it from MEC. i got one for $25, returning it soon. Horribly rough opening and tilted thumb stud. So bad that I cut my thumb twice (on the thumb stud) trying to open it. Guess I got unlucky, ordered a spyderco delica 4 instead.
CRKT does make some excellent unassuming blades. My fiancee gave me a CRKT Snap Lock for V-Day. I laughed cuz its so small as to be comical and I didn't think it was gonna be worth much. Boy did I ever have to swallow my words on that one. I love the little bugger, It's so handy for EDC, the size is perfect, and the sharpness just blew me away, Just like Nutn said, razor-sharp right out of the box. Excellent.
I have to agree about the baby sitting from CRKT. I ordered a desert tan M16 something model. Anyway it has a seconfary lock that has to be disengaged prior to the primary lock. I love the knife other then that, but I hate stupid safeties. Get rid of them so the dumb people will weed themselves out!
I may be an odd duck, but I genuinely like the tip-down carry, I find that I personally can draw faster with it. I'm starting to get annoyed with manufactures making tip-up only knives. *cough*buck vantage*cough*
What's weird to me is at that price you get what you get from the knife, but that it could be even cheaper (or savings spent on things like skeletonizing the liner, etc) if they just ditched that denim sheath, used a standard torx pivot screw (that one looks cool but it's more plus the added cost of the tool included), and didn't throw on that safety mechanism.
Not that there's anything wrong with it's value as it is. Great review!
I bought that Nerve for my brother awhile back and he had the thumb stud break off. He still carries it and its a two handed opener now. Great nife tho and it was only $18! Looking forward to the review on that! Thatnks for all the great vids!
great video short, sweet, and loaded with info. i would like to see more review vids like this. I dont have time to watch a 30 min vid on a knife keep it up!!!!
Nutn, speaking of Mr. Lake, did you see the "Lake Thunderbolt 2 Razor Edge"? Talk about some kind of cool...check it out and review that one, 18.00 so its a potential under 40 folder. Thanks Nutn!
If any of you have a Strider adjustment tool that comes with any knife that Strider makes and you like the CRKT Lake, you could probably use the adjustment tool on the Lake.
I keep wondering: Why does so many knifes come with the blade up style? It's horible for EDC knifes. And when you can't switch? man... Is there a law or somthing for blade down style someware in the US?
Speaking for my self I wouldn't mind hearing the difference between those steels. I got into your vids back in december of '08 because of how indepth you go into your reviews and all of the philosophy that comes with them.
I would totally get this...if it wasn't for the clip placement and lack of options. I am a lefty. One of the many reasons I always head back to spyderco, benchmade and coldsteel(to a lesser extent)....clip placement options. Kershaw blades are horrible for lefty options, crkt not so good either.
I have Lake111 for about two years now and I can honestly say I hate it. Nothing good to say about it, edge retention is poor, pocket clip comes loose, opening speed decreases drastically, LBS is more a designer thing than something usable.
This is exactly why I have watched all your vids nutn. I really believ youre the only guy out there telling us where to find these ultra high value and high quality products. You are totally the man. Do you have experience with the quickfire trigger mounted rail adapter?? I want to have flashlight option on my p225 for HD and since its railless, im a bit at a loss. Also, would you ever put something like a quark mini 123 on a small framed auto like a p225? I saw your excellent review on that li
hey nutn. how do you get your delica ffg to deploy so quickly? i have one, and when i tried to loosen it enough to make it deploy faster, it just resulted in there being a large amount of side-to-side play. any advice?
@rtmilster It is all in the thumb. Unlike other Spyderco knives, some Delicas are stiff. You need to put the tip of your thumb in the hole, with your thumb bent. Then, a combination of a wrist-flick and quick straightening of the thumb will snap the Delica open. Other knives, I have [like the Tenacious] don't require nearly the same technique. The Delica is a great knife...just not the fastest to deploy until you get the technique down. Good luck!
Nutn you gotta do a review of the Buck Paklite, ive been having good luck with it, good fixed blade, i bought it originally to have a fixed blade but its light, i cant feel it, sharp as hell, 420HC is ok
I like seeing you review CRKT but I really really hate their pocket clip positions. I mean seriously, you can't complain much for 16$ but for the love of god how difficult would it be to drill a few more holes for tip up carry???
@evilsquirrel56231 im really new to knives, so pardon my ignorance, but why are you guys so insistent on tip up carry? How much of a difference or advantage does it make?
@QCprepper Well it's not much of an advantage but I just prefer tip-up (as does nutnfancy). With some good quality knives (such as some Spyderco models for example) you have 4 slots for up and down carry, for both left and right handed people. It's all about choice. Besides, the Spyderco Tenacious I'm carrying right now is much more comfortable in the pocket when worn tip-up... Tip down gets all the jimping on the spine on your way when you put your hand down your pocket and scratches you
hmmm that knife kinda reminds me of the rollock except bigger...and i loved the rollock ive always wanted a plain edge one and its actually cheaper too!
IMO the LBS may be needed in a few instances where a very strong grip on the handle may release the lock. I did some self defence training with a spyderco lock-back knife once and during a stabbing sim I was gripping so hard that the blade unlocked and folded in on my fingers. If it wasn't for the lug at the base of the blade I would have easily lost a finger!
@haloora My friend just got Benchmade 710-D2 for about 100$.Its new but wasnt purchesed in the knife-shop. Check some French knives sites-those got always sth like junk yard. 100$-BM710 was found in such place at Knives.pl. BTW Im from Poland-knives are expensive here as hell but its posible to find them at good prices as shown above;)
Dear fellow Europeans: always buy gear online in the US! (For example on eBay US.) Even including 20 USD shipping costs, prices are often 50%(!) cheaper compaired to Europe!! And I'm talking online stores. Just checked a standard Spyderco Military (my EDC) at knivesandtools.nl in Holland: 192 EUR/284 USD!?! Leatherman Charge TTI: 160 EUR/237 USD!?! (EUR/USD rate changes.) @JDYTC I know dude! Here in Romania there is only one(at least from my searches) good online store that sells knives at the recommended price(the price showed on the maker's site). And you're right! You guys in U.S. get them even half the recommended price.
i think the lock is ok cause if i were to put the blade through some hard use i would lock the lock so there would be no chance of it closing on my hand. and it seems as though u had a little trouble locking it...i know it wont lock in my pocket like my kershaw leek does
I really want that brass version, I might be able to get away with it at work, they only allow a 3" blade. I might also break out the tools and mount that clip the right way!
I wonder, does that lock safety contribute at all to a stronger lock? I mean, I can't see how the mechanism works from the exterior, but for the lock to fail (unless it completely breaks) it needs to actuate. Maybe that silly thing actually serves a purpose besides babysitting us. Even if it doesn't, I like that it doesn't automatically engage as is the case with their liner-locks. I would love you see some strength tests on that if you have the time...
HMMM.. Love this knife. Need POS (Point of Sale). CS (Cutlery Shoppe) No. USC (U.S. Cavalry) No, TKC (theknifecollector) No, EBAY (Echo Bay (interesting)) No brass liner, CRKT.com (DUH - Did Ulook here?) Ok so I found it here but no mention of brass liner... OK I found at Cabela's (thanks yq397r) and am purchasing now...even though I really don't like cabela's...but great price $15.88. I will set aside my resentment for incredible value...occassionally.
No if's, and's or but's, Nutn, I WILL be getting this knife for my birthday in 4 days. You can count on it. SIXTEEN DOLLARS? That's the BEST price range on an adequate EDC blade that I've seen in the project. I can't belive it, honestly. I can't wait to see about getting this knife, it'll be the best present. Thanks for reviewing it!
I ordered this a couple days ago from Cabela's for the low price of $15.88, checked youtube to see if nutnfancy had reviewed the CRKT Lake 111 didn't see anything but ordered it anyway, and now, heres the review! Look forward to getting it soon.
Good looking, inexpensive knife. Don't like the mandatory tip-down carry and the need for an adjustment tool to tighten it up but still, a good value.
I was thinking about getting one of these a while ago. I'll wait on it though because I have a Leek and Scallion in the mail. Don't want to spend all my money. You're making me poor! :P
What are you views on tip-down/tip-up knives when their riding in your pocket?

The 7255 is the plain edge, the 7256 is the combo edge.
Also the aluminum/brass clasic has been discontinued .
They come without the case but a much better collectable, especially
now. The msrp was $50, compared to the Zytel which goes for $30.
The aluminum/brass is the one to have.

Then, a combination of a wrist-flick and quick straightening of the thumb will snap the Delica open. Other knives, I have [like the Tenacious] don't require nearly the same technique. The Delica is a great knife...just not the fastest to deploy until you get the technique down. Good luck!

i started w/ CRKT's, and still love em
love the scamp, 3.5" blade is MY choice for edc.

i think the lock is ok cause if i were to put the blade through some hard use i would lock the lock so there would be no chance of it closing on my hand. and it seems as though u had a little trouble locking it...i know it wont lock in my pocket like my kershaw leek does
Mrbowgod 9 months ago
I really want that brass version, I might be able to get away with it at work, they only allow a 3" blade. I might also break out the tools and mount that clip the right way!

I like the lock.

The denim sheet is so damn hokey... Knife looks great, though. Tip-up would be better IMO, though.

@luke812 Wait Wait...No freakin straight edge -only combo on Cabela's. Won't do it. ^re-insert resentment here.

Hey Nutn I know its not about those knives but im a long time subscriber and I never seen any Karambit style of knife review in TNP.
What are your thoughts on those?
Will we see any in the future in TNP?
JoeDurobot 9 months ago

The denim sheeth looks pretty cool. Not sure if I'd actually use it, tho.
