I have been involved with show dogs, dog breeding and rescue work since I was 19. I'm now in my 30s. I can tell you from experience that attitude isn't just humor. There's also this unspoken assumption among them that rescue work and dog care is something especially suited for women and not in the realm of masculinity. Your observations are not off!
