No, the Union had about 2.5x the population of the Confederacy. Based on the 1860 census, it was 22,100,000 (71% of total US population), versus 9,100,000 (29% of total US pop.).
The real disparities were in overall manufacturing (90% in the Union, 10% in the Confederacy), and firearms manufacturing specifically (97% in the Union, 3% in the Confederacy).

Slaves were very much a part of the north at that time. Slavery ended in the south in 1863. Slavery didn't end in the remaining northern slave states until 1865. The Rebel Flag was only a part of the CSA army from 1861-1865. If the Rebel Flag stands for slavery, the US Flag stood for it 85 years before the Rebel Flag even existed.

In addition, the slave trade was outlawed in Britain well before it was in America. British authorities were not allowed to board American vessels. So when ships would approach the British slave ships, the ship's crew would hoist the American flag to keep from being boarded by British authorities.

@TheBoberton do it without the use of firearms, and they will generally fail miserably as an official with the use of firearms will have the clear advantage over the under armed assailant.
Also, you really can't compare us to Britain. You can break into someones house, cut yourself on their glass window, sue, and win in Britain, so I don't think they really should be in this conversation. (No I'm not making this up. It really happened.)

Also, in case you didn't know, the ban on Assault weapons, although it DID statistically decrease the amount of gun related crimes, is NOT being renued by the obama administration. They ARE, however, proposing to ratify CIFTA, which puts more regulation on illegal gun importation and smuggling into the U.S.
There is not and will not be any bans on guns anytime soon.

@franksinclair1 If my heritage is one of defending slavery, yours is too. The founding fathers owned slaves, and didn't free them either. The north owned slaves during the Civil War, and didn't free them until forced to by the 13th. Slavery existed under the American flag for 80 years, and it only existed under the Confederate flag for four.

@UnionStatesHeritage The "Sons of Confederate Veterans" is by far the largest Confederate organization around and we have black members. We are 30,000 members strong and were started in 1896. We represent the Confederate Battle Flag more than anyone else can claim.

Yep, and LSskimandsk8...one of the ringleaders of the above mentioned groups is also a member of the SCV...or claims to be.
His group members have discussed attacking US military bases for the purpose of weapons procurement ("and of course, killing some Yankees"), aligning themselves with foreign enemies, etc.
The SCV has become a radical Anti-American group, and many of its original members have left in protest.
How many Black members...you know...there WERE Jews for Hitler.

No, the Union had about 2.5x the population of the Confederacy. Based on the 1860 census, it was 22,100,000 (71% of total US population), versus 9,100,000 (29% of total US pop.).
The real disparities were in overall manufacturing (90% in the Union, 10% in the Confederacy), and firearms manufacturing specifically (97% in the Union, 3% in the Confederacy).

Tells an entirely different Southern perspective of the war. One that the SCV and UDC do not want to acknowledge.
While you are at it, check out the blogs Renegade South, Southern Unionist Chronicles, and Civil War Memory.
CSA was defeated as much by internal dissent, as it was by Union soldiers.

Johnnies like hammering away at Lincoln's quotes on slavery before and during the secession crisis, instead of later years after his views started to change.
Even so, there is nothing at all damning in Lincoln's quote. He was doing his duty as President of the entire nation, and representing the interests of all regions.
Bottom line ...1861 4 million slaves (half the South's pop.) living in bondage. 1865 4 million slaves are free...courtesy of the Union.

The north wanted to keep slaves slaves or deport them out of the country. The result of the war are 4 million slaves are free, true only because Lincoln isn't around to deport them. Bottom line 620,000 men are dead. Does that mean the war was about killing 620,000 men?

LOL...yet another example of sly twisted Confederate propaganda. Yep they were contraband. They were the seized "property" of rebels, who were eventually freed.
In Pennsylvania, Lee's army seized free Blacks and marched them South to slavery, and referred to them as "contraband". Same term, different meaning.
