i found it sad when watching the end of evangelion and shinji almost relives a different version of this scene (as they are in the same clothes etc. it is clearly the same scene) it made it seem as though shinji was trying to relive that one moment because it was the only time he felt somebody need him or could help him, but then obviously in the second one he ends up strangling her :/ i reaaaaaally hope he changes that in the final film remake

If they were two years older, she'd propbably get that poor, shy, obedient kid who has something of a crush on her to fuck her before he is truly "ready" for stuff like that, thinking she is. In fact, she is ALMOST doing that - kisses, expecially the first ones, are seen as something very intimate in Japan, but it is only realistic for teenagers to "experiment", no matter where they're from, and I like how this is shown here, because, sadly, not EVERYONE's first kiss is uber romantic....

More "mature/advanced" youngsters taking advantage of more inexperienced, insecure ones to "experiment" - It happens a lot. while ppl tend to think that guys do this to girls more often, it's also possible the other way around - and pretty probably, since girls mature faster and boys are under the pressure to act "manly".

Shinji (and the audience first time round) think that Asuka really is bored and just wants to kiss for the sake of it. But when she runs off, you can sense by her silence that she's mad. Of course the bleh! from the english dub makes this less obvious. I didn't pick this up until I read an article on the Eva wiki of Shinji's and Asuka's relationship

Yeah. I'd stop short of saying that the English dub was horrible--actually, I think it was very good--but it could have been better. It messed up some of the more subtle touches like this scene.

Wow. I didn't realize how much difference there was between the English and Japanese versions. In the English one, they make a lot of noise while kissing, and Asuka gives the obligitory "BLECH!" at the end, giving it all a very comical feel; whereas this version seems to portray the psychology behind it all a lot more clearly.

You're so right - This is not saying that the dubs are bad in general, but they're not in the position to "correct" an Artwork like EVA by randomly inserting stuff like they see it fit! This isn't comical or erotic, it is a very DEPRESSING scene about misunderstanding and the hardship of human communication - these two actually have the hots for each other, but they both royally fail to communicate that to each other - they've kissed, but they're both feeling unloved afterwards.
