@SupremeDigitalArtist Theoretically it can go forever. In practice, I wouldn't trust the redstone to work right past maybe double your render distance or so. I'd start to worry that the computer wouldn't recognize that it's hooked up way over past the horizon.

can't you do something like this, but with a fully secure tram that people can stand in? and then just have redstone torches under to power the pistons? and maybe use the rapid fire despensor system to speed it up? but surely the repeaters would have to be immense amounts. i don't see how it would go very fast. plus, it would take forever. so it would actually be slower than walking using my idea. the system? the pistons are kind of slow. not fun, but effective.

hey i tryed this (on 1.8) but it kinda failed, i tryed to do it about as good as yours, but one problem, the redstone only powers the non-stickey piston, and doesnt give the stickey one a "turn" meaning it just stays there....so uh...any idea how to fix that?

there is one that is faster then the speed of walking but it uses a diferent engine and can only last 14 blocks so every 14 blocks you have to have another engine

Cool I think I will try this out it's much simpler than your last train design. So pretty much you have powered redstone going down the entire track powered by a redstone torch every so often. Nice also a download link would be helpful..

@StortebeckerSF It's called a redstone clock generator. It generates pulses that vary depending on the model. The uploader seems to have used a piston-based clock.

@EGarrett01 sadly not at the moment, not in vanilla anyway. Every redstone related block is broken by pistons. I'm sure it's doable with mods but that would defeat the purpose.

@TheOneCalledGamer i see where your gojin but even if u managed that you only be able to power the front piston of the engine, not the back one. The conundrum is that for every block you add to try power them, you have to push that block and so it's simply undoable =P

if you put the last repeater right next to the main power line, you can use a lot less to power the same distance

@spulet43 Use a redstone repeater every 15 blocks, it will continue the current an additional 15 blocks. You can do this until the current reaches 300 blocks covered, then you need a new power source:)
