This was a huge movie in the 80s, I don't know why its so forgotten now. They opened up a ramen store named Tampopo in Little Tokyo here in LA after this movie came out, I wonder if its still there. For what its worth, I think Pho tastes better. Prolly not worth anything.
OMG !!!! Yes Ramen'wa !!!! LMAO , I seen this at a Seattle film fest. a looooong time ago , I was really into everthing Asian back then had many Asian friends back in the day , Awesome Film , thankx for the treeat memory lane !!!!
I know what you mean! After I saw Deliverance with my friends in college we started wearing Caucasian clothes, eating Caucasian food and listened to their wacky music. A few of us even hung out with them every now and then and dated a few too. We were really into things Caucasian. Silly times but it Good times! Sigh.
@neverforget09112001 Racists asses? I have butt only one ass which has no remorse for it's past, present and future actions and is far from being racist. Not sure how you came up with that ASSumption. Living in America makes it very easy to find "actual white people". They're all over the place! High five sister! You're so crazy!
Juzo Itami had a fixation with food and pleasures of the flesh, like me. His films touched the heart .Common people doing every day things. Not typically japanese, yet relevant to the average joe. The japanese are no different in that respect.I admire the jananese commitment to heritage and tradition, some thing we westerners have lost sight of,what a pity.I live in San Francisco California USA and a large population of japanese are here and we get along famousely.A great place to live.
Did you know that the woman, tampopo, was in real life Juzo Itami,s wife? He was having an affair when he chose to jump to his death off a five story building. How tragic! The world is a lesser place with out him. I put him in the same company as Akira Kurosawa. Akira did a film "high and low" in which the truckdriver [in tampopo] was the villian, black and white, 1952,something worthy of hitchcock of which Kurasawa was a fan of. Check out Itami,s "the wedding" great also!
Actually, according to the ImDB, it was the eight story building that his office was located in. His suicide note denied the allegations of the Japanese tabloid, Flash. I checked on the title of his yakuza move, it's Minbo no Onna.
Ken Watanabe was so young back then... :p

@gmrios considering what Deliverance is about, I dread to think what clothes, food and music you were into!

Of all of his movies, Tampopo is my favorite. What's the title of his yakuza movie? I haven't had the chance to see that one yet.

You're perfectly right. Such a terrible loss, when the world so badly needs film-makers like Itami.
