They are people just like the rioters, and in many cases shares the same views as the rioters. But unlike the self-indulging rioters, they are also tasked with the responsibility of maintaining the peace.

It's really messed up. The riot police doesn't even carry guns when they need it most and most people fail to realize that those guys are usually only 18 or 19 years olds since Korean men must join the armed forces or riot police when they reach a certain age. My friend has to join in about a year and it's a real shame

wat do you mean, police fight back all the time, thats where the adrenaline rush is in. And the reason why they problebly don't go in gung ho is for two reasons. one, to keep in formation because there's strength in numbers and (because authority has already been established) to determing who is exactly causing damage or harm. and to Fliboi36612, if the riot police use firebombs or LIVE ammunition, its a sign that the government has failed and many people police or not, do not trust its ideals

Poor riot police. I feel so bad for them. I saw them all the time during the beef protests this summer. They are just kids and they are forced and drafted to this section of the military. I know a friend of my who is in the riot police now and I worry about him so much. Most of them are only 19-22 years old. I was caught in a riot once and I an American girl so I was pretty scared, but one of them helped me figure out how to get out. 오빠 화이팅! :)

South Korea's military dictatorship allowed South Korea to become a economic success. They did more good than bad. South Korea's dictatorship was necessary to fight against North Korea. Compared to North Korea, they are saints. Also these riot police are mostly conscripted men who are serving their mandatory military service.  Most of the recent protests in South are being conducted by labor unions and farmers. They want more pay and no FTA with the US.
