  • @portstewartsam When I first heard it, I thought so, too. But the more I listen to this song, the more I realise how essential the coda is. This song is about hop, hence the title. Just when you think it's all over, the song is finished, there is nothing to hope for, first we hear a hopeful little motif emerge from the accompaniment (which we don't hear in this version) and then the song is reborn. It's a deceptively simple song working at several levels.

  • i love his voice!

  • During the last football season I often found myself singing this song between the time that the offence went on. Such a lovely song!

  • 1:41 = Alleluja (jeff buckley)

  • Amazing.

  • Fuckin' beautiful!

  • It is a peace song

  • :( its too low

  • One of the best songs ever !

  • I'm from Enniskillen :)

  • This song is fantastic, its message should never be forgotten. We should listen to this and affirm, 'we are not going back to The Troubles.'

  • Whoever did the sound mixing was on valium or something :(

  • Awesome. Peace and love.

  • Neil est le meilleur tout simplement...

  • with a few lyrical changes it could certainly be a new anthem for Ulster. beautiful song

  • What lyrical changes would you suggest? Just wondering...

  • im not a lyricist so anything i came up with would most likely be detrimental to the song, but neil's a clever bloke so i'd leave it to him, if he so wished

  • @portstewartsam I sometimes think the song would be perfect just ending at "...beneath the ground". It might punch the heart a little more powerfully that way. I imagine Neil didn't want to end the album on such a dark note, but personally I feel the whole "sunrise" coda puts the song into soft focus, taking away its rawness, and leaving us thinking, "well, that's sorted then." There's still a kind of hope implied in the "who cares?" verse - it says, we're all human, so let's stop this now.

  • Always puts the hairs on the back of my neck standing on end. Really good song. It's more than just a song though. It always inspires national pride.

  • Far and away the best song ever written about Northern Ireland, and one of the best on Fin De Siecle...

  • @Dipthefal not forgetting the police 'invisible sun' of course. have you seen the video?

  • Lovely song.

  • Such a beautiful and poignant song and Neil always sings it with such passion.

  • This give me the collywobbles every time. :)
