I will never ever forget when I heard this album. Smack dab in the middle of an era of bad rock. Then these guys came along and changed rock music!! I like a lot of music from R&B to Speed metal, just as long as the music has "artistic soul" Roth-Era Van Halen is Raw emotional youthful energy, They definiely captured summer of 1978 for me
This album helped to revive hard rock and heavy metal in 78-79.with bands like kiss, aerosmith, and black sabbath declining and the punk movement, this album gave hard rock and metal a much needed shot in the arm.
I agree the real Van Halen is DLR on vocals... But don't forget they had huge success with Sammy also... I still bought their stuff 5150, ou812, etc... Was it as good as VH 1 OR VH 2, Fair warning etc...? No it wasnt but it was still solid... Who knows what would have happened if DLR would have stayed on through all those Sammy years.. I dont waste time on that... It is what it is... I am just happy DLR is back now with a new Album coming out and tour...
@TheJasonCombee76 --- Do yourself a HUGE favor.....take your Van Hagar CDs out to your driveway and pour lighter fluid on them.....then light a match.....watch 'em burn.....that's what I did about 10 years ago.....best thing you will ever do!
@StuffedGames --- Hee hee....I think any true VH fan needs to listen to the entire Van Hagar catalog to fully understand what boring, pedestrian music sounds like....otherwise, you will never fully appreciate how good the Roth-era was and still is
There shouldn`t be a dislike choice on any of the tunes on Van Halens first album. The whole first album is rock and roll perfection that just gets better with age. Van Halen with Ted Templeman producing was pure magic.
@huntersingle You may be right. But, didn't you like the smokin baby album? Kid must have emphysema by now. But seriously, their first two or three albums were as good as it gets. Remember, those were different times.
@tuvan06 Thanks. I always thought they had a harder edge to them in those first few years, more of a hard rock band. With Sammy, they got a little too commercial for me. Saw the reunion tour a few years ago with Dave, and it was well worth it, even though they're a little older now. Can't wait for this new album they're working on. Hope I don't have to wait another 20 years.
@atomicpunk48 ..Yeah I know what you mean...but those first years/albums of... 'This is it..!?!?!?...... are worth a lifetime of ...'What ifs..??...(AND ...we were there!?!?)
Jon is that what I think it is? Funny I didn't see it til now. I forgot some of what I saw Ben writing and drawing. I remember his beautiful pictures of wild cats. I wished I could draw that good at the time. Don't suppose Lucky Eddie and Alex mentioned Mastodon between doing Mammoth. Sammy was a great bass player. Glad your far away from my sister. Sara was a little doll wasn't she? I hope she's doing well along with Danielle. Say hi to Jen for me.
I just listened to the almost half of this album, and this is the first song that I find to be something worth listening to. Oh, and if you're wondering I listened to Feel Your Love Tonight, Runnin With the Devil. Ain't Talkin About Love, and On Fire.
@ghost20063 if it took you 5 songs to finally enjoy a song off of this cd/album, may i suggest you go to the row that has " Wham" in it, you obviously do not have an inkling on what the term Rock N Roll guitar is.
i know has anybody seen how gay mtv has become, i mean what the hell, you think it would fucking kill them to play what people really want to hear, i mean who gives a shit about some punk ass little brats reality show anyway. most of those little fuckers dont know what reality is. play the videos rock and roll. fucking station has no game anymore.
Awesome. VH is where it started. Glad to here about their new world tour and album. These legends have rocked long and hard. Dont forget it kiddies!!!!
This became my fist favorite VH song back when I was a kid. Probably bought the first 6 albums at least 3 times each. Eddie gets one of his best tones on little dreamer, his best riffs, and this is Diamond Dave at his finest hour!
@usmc18111 Man did you just cause a flashback! Cept' mine was a Mercury Comet with a 302 Boss. The world WAS rock and roll with Van Halen screaming from the sub woofers. oh... and Budweiser. Great times!
@usmc18111 I was havin a sweet hot brunette tryin to drive my 67 SS Camaro, in 78. 4 on the floor. Every Start was either a kill or 20 feet of rubber, Lots of rockin and rollin going back then.
@usmc18111 ---- Sippin' a cold Stroh's on the hood of your GTO in '78 while Roth Van Halen cranks on the stereo on a warm summer night ---- I'm not sure life gets any better than that
they opened for black sabbath in 78 in cincinnati and blew black sabbath away. they played the album from start to finish for their set. eddie was phenomenal.
David Lee Roth is one of the few white frontmen who could pull off singing like a black dude and make it sound as natural as possible. The little bit before the bridge on this one is priceless. And Van Halen was at its best when he was still in the group. DLR forever!
Hard to believe this was late 70's. Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, Ace, Player, Little River Band are all good, then this came out, mind bending riffs, that will blow your socks off. Gimme more VH!
The fact that the riff starts right on the first beat, in stead of half a beat later which feels more natural, just makes it a million times better than it allready is.
Probably the most under rated song on the first album, yet it's one of my all time CVH songs of all time... But you were young and bold and baby didn't that change with a wink of your eye!!!
