Bobby if you do the Dark Brotherhood quests you're given a spell that allows you to summon a badass companion who doesn't go away until he gets killed. And you can summon him again if you wait 24 hours.

It's kind of a glitch if your companion dies, they should just go down. The next time that happens, just load before the death of your companion ( they mostly die if you kill them)

If you are still looking for a new companion, you should do the companion guild and complete the quest line, from there you have a choice of about 3 or 4 good people to have as your companions, maybe better than lydia, hope this helped :)
