The ability to bend like that is a byproduct of playing without any excess pressure, relying on the tongue a lot, and finding the optimal half-valving so that you're always getting the right sound as you move through the range. It should be a very effortless thing, not strenuous at all - just like buzzing on the mouthpiece.
