He would have had to play this on strings that were tuned down so much that they wouldn't make a note when played for it sound like this at a higher speed!

I agree that a lot of guitarists think that bass is easy, when in fact it is much harder than guitar - but the riffs bassists play ARE generally easier. However, try playing a guitar song (such as Sweet Child o' Mine) on bass, and you'll find that it is a LOT harder. So on that point I agree.
