Too bad there was no way Jaycie or Mary Lee could have went over to the judges and explained that the back roll was a new element Jaycie had just inserted into the beam routine. "Yeah, I think it's like a D element or something."
@roch202020 Heartbroken for his gymnasts is what he should have felt, instead he appears in almost every scene to be heartbroken for himself! Big difference.
Ugh Tom Forster. I can't stand it when a coach decides that they want to coach a gymnast to the Olympic team, with their own personal aspirations emphasized far more than those of the athlete herself. Same reason why I soured on the Rybacki's in 2000.
I was watching the 08 games and saw a coach that was questionable in that respect too. I don't know his name, but he gave a pole vaulter really negative feedback about her getting a silver and not a gold right there on camera where everyone could hear. It was horrible, they were from the US. It was so uncalled for
I felt bad for Tom Forster. Didn't he also coach Kerri Strug in 1995, but then Kerri returned to Bela? Also, he coached Doni Thompson, who was so talented, but I remember hearing that Doni burned out with gymnastics, and then switched to diving.
yeah, but Kerri switched back to Bela after she found out he had come out of retirement completely.. she would have stayed with him had he never retired in the first place. I was not surprised when she left Tom to go to Bela again.
@1996gymnasticsfan he's the typical example of living vicariously through the athletes, a coach should want the athlete to succeed, not so they (the coach) gets praised more than the athlete. What happened to loving the sport and wanting to see it grow and continue through the athletes they train?
@HeyButtahfly I totally agree with you, especially with the Rybacki's - they had their chance with Atler but insisted on keeping that stupid comanici (sp?) movement in her bars routine to the point where she was unable to do bars at all and left the gym. She was amazing and they blew it.
I think the decision to have her sit off of beam was a good one. She had a pretty risky routine and very rarely did she outscore Phelps and Strug. On floor, there was a lot of controversy surrounding her Dixie music leading up to Atlanta after the Trials. Dumb, I know. I think Jaycie was just a little more consistent with staying in bounds. If I was to replace someone on floor it would have been Amanda. She was the weaker tumbler of the 7. Amy was also suffering from some injuries, so...
@miamivicepastels83 Absolutely not. I mean, I realize all athletes would rather have gold than silver, but silver is a tremendous accomplishment when you consider how many athletes would give their right arm for the shot to win any Olympic medal at all. I think it's awful when coaches choose to rub in the loss rather than celebrate the athlete's accomplishment. It was her first Olympics and she lost to the best female pole vaulter in history. Nothing to be embarrassed about.
I love Amy Chow's gymnastics. She never hesitated before a pass or did the time-wasting arm waving in the corners...her movements just flow.

What was amy's last pass?

Tom is a great guy! He's NOT gay, he was or is married to Lori.

I've always loved how Amy does a COMPLETE triple twist, unlike most of the other gymnasts at the time that did more of a 2 3/4!

This comment has received too many negative votes show
I guarantee you Tom Forester is gay/bi.

My heart goes to coach Tom Forster, he seems like a very likable guy, he was genuinely heartbroken!

I remember that and thought the exact same thing. I mean seriously, is silver all that bad at the Olympics???

Doni left elite gymnastics in 1996 and then returned to the gym (I'm not sure when) and ended up competing for UCLA in NCAA gymnastics.

yes she switched to diving then back to gym for NCAA

I would have had her do all 4 events in Atlanta. Her beam is better then Kerri Strug and floor better then Jaycie Phelps.

Amanda usually outscored Jaycie on floor. Jaycie was unimpressive on floor. Weak tumbler and weak dancer. Just my opinion.
I have no idea how Strug ever got a 9.5 on beam to be honest. She was awful on that event I found.

Ok seriously Amy Chow's music has to be the worst piece of floor music I've ever heard. And I'm from the south!!

Yeah I agree also! And I'm actually from Atlanta! I went to the final at the Dome and that music would have been weird but hilarious!
