Has anyone heard Tom Jones cover this. His cover is in my opinion 100x better than this one. Go listen to it. It is actually mind blowing considering his age. His voice just booms on this song. Now it is different sounding than this. the music is nothing like this. His is real bluesy. Check it out
obviously the person knows its john lee hooker its fukn cool but it is kinda shit in that its rushed vocally and and i dunno somethings missing... i love the tom jones version but this is like hes off his tits on piss or sumthin... i mean james brown is shit in that theoretically hes a shit singer but u kn0w brown and hooker both have spirit, sumthing that u have 2 earn , sumthing u cannot learn
You're right, the original has got some bite this one doesn't (not that i think this version is bad). Keep an eye out for "The Very Best of" on Rhino -- I think that's got the version you're looking for.
check out the original. it has more guts, and soul. the meanest song i ever heard. can't find it on u-tube. this is tired, and contrived. sick of white pop(rock) stars, teaming up with blues legends. it always sucks. eric clapton sucks. leave the blues to the masters. the blues isn't about technique and learning your scales. it's about heartache and pain, amoung other things. r.i.p john lee hooker. ain't gonna burn, ain't gonna burn........
take that, you evangelicals, you fundamentalists! You can't threaten me, you can't judge me - you don't know the answer either, you only think you do - so hold your peace
Well, there's so much cultural propaganda about going to either Heaven or to Hell -- I've had evangelist preachers tell me I'm going to hell, as if they had the eyes of God and the power to judge - one generally has some kind of psycholigical reaction to this kind of self-glorying proclamation: "is he right? How does he know?" etc - so the protest is a defense against being manipulated, proselytized, bullied, intimidated - I'd prefer that God existed, myself -
This version is shit compared to his original version.. which I can't find ANYWHERE! No one has uploaded it for some reason? Along with Awful Dream by Lightnin Hopkins. I can't find that one either? This sounds like the shit he did in the 70's with Canned Heat. This is not the best version of this song people! Just him and his guitar from the late fifties is the best version!
@hizerjason. Maybe you should think before you make statements like that. This version is not what you would call "shit". Come on man, this is John Lee Hooker - the king of blues.
I've heard Hooker's solo version, yes, you're right - Hooker & guitar, very stark, rough, angry & despairing, almost -- and one can see his point: the only defense against the threat of damnation is to disavow the existence of the afterlife altogether -- kind of a devil's bargain, fear and faith go out the window at once, and a man is his own but life has no hope anymore -- remains a powerful song, and nobody else ever came close to writing anything like it
@hizerjason I've heard three versions, this, the solo old one and one inbetween where he has a backing band but it's much more dark and intense than this one.
@hizerjason By God son, you are an ignorant and useless son of a bitch.. you just can't feel the 'boogie' it is probably because of where you come from right? some can transcend that affliction. You? you is a poor, poor sucker and deserve to swim around in your own mess. John Lee decided to make many affiliations with white artists, to move the 'feeling' along. This drummer right here got the feeling and the lyric is the message pal.
@hizerjason Dude...you're totally right. That version is AMAZING. So deep. All the other versions, including all the covers by people who shall remain nameless SUCK. But you can buy it on Amazon if you want. Just google burnin hell amazon, or burnin hell hooker amazon, or something like that. Has a dark cover with fire, if you remember. I just ordered a back up copy myself for ten bucks. By the way, if you like deep raw blues, you might like some stuff on my channel. Good luck.
This is BAAD ASS! All the elements are fantastic. Why is there not a full rating on this one?? There's worse with 10. Wow. This gives me chills and puts it all in perspective.

I always find it so amazing the amount of energy Atheists put into stating their objection to the truth.
I mean if you do not believe....so be it, your call. That is why we have free will.
"doth protest too much" .....you got issues.

@SupernalOne no body can definitly say if somebody is going to hell or heaven that judgment is for God alone.
But we can get a pretty good idea of things by simply understanding Gods word and history.

@junioussuna No, no it's not. John wrote this song in 1949. And the original recording was a lot better.
