I love the way that old radio looks. I am afraid I wouldn't know where to start operating something like that. Those were long gone by the time I got into ham radio. I wish my hf rig sounded that good.
Read your comments on the R-390A. I have to agree regarding the cost-cutting effort that resulted in mechanical filters. My favorite of that ilk was my R-725. The R-725 was a hybrid using the R-390A chassis fitted with the lovely LC filters from an R-390. I bought 4 of the R-725s fro Fair Radio. Still, for ergonomics and fighting ham band QRM the R-390/R390A/R-725 all fall a bit short IMHO. No passband tuning or XTAL phasing. The band change is carpal tunnel on a knob.
@N0rthwestRadio You are in the AM group on 3870 as well? I listen to the round table down there much of the time and might join you guys when I upgrade to General. The receiver I am using is a modern one Icom R-75 hooked up to a 188 foot multiband dipole which seems to work great the carriers typically hit 20 to 30 over S-9!
I got into amateur radio in the late 1960's and I kind of miss the old AM days! Most of the voice activity back then was still on AM mode and it was always a pleasure to listen to! Thanks for posting this video!
nice radio you've got there mate just seen the video that's a monster size radio but it looks beutiful and well made can you transmitt with it? and I wonder how many watts it pushes out? just outa intrest? good video I must say and it's really nice to see people on here who like the old type of radios it really is take care and best 73's stephen M3SNV from brekfield liverpool england.
I can smell the tubes and the old vintage speaker paper right through the screen! I have an old Hallicrafters s-38b that unfortunatly died on me a few months back, but man, there's nothing like listening to a real tube radio and some real radio operators.
@punishedexistence I don't know if I would call an S-38 a real tube radio. It uses tubes but, besides that, there is nothing real about it. For the best that it is dead, it died before it killed you, which they can do fairly easily since the chassie is hot. Get between that thing and ground, and you will know about it.
Man, AM still sounds beautiful to me, especially with FB TX and RX equipment!
Sounds like some T-storms nearby..
I like your RCA console. It's a classic. I have the original 6L6 monitor amplifier that goes with it.
I sold two Hallicrafters SX-28s last year at a hamfest. They're pretty, but the SP-600 is a much more solid piece of equipment. I had one of those at one time.
nice cool nice to see them still working only if alot more people used am I talk on a 6-meter am repeater thats kinda near me about 20-miles in this stuff is cool in fun to use
That's a BW-66E, an RCA modulation monitor used to track the audio level in an AM transmitter. It also has an audio output channel with a very clean, low distortion signal to view on an oscilloscope or to feed an audio amplifier. This gives a more accurate sense of how a station's transmitter is sounding, compared to typical AM receivers, then or now.
I'm a proud new owner of a SP-600 ,I must say, what a joy it is to operate. Turn out all the lights in the room and gaze into the dials.. The R 390a is more stable ,but for SWLing it's the 600. Nice looking shack
Sensitivity is about the same. Other factors make tube radios sound better, in my opinion, than most solid state receivers. For example, the SP600 establishes its selectivity more gently, and its amplifier circuitry has less noise and distortion.
75M Phone is so cool. I grew up in the 1960s listening daily to Don K4KYV and Con W4EBG and all the other guys on 75. Although he's been gone for years, I can still hear Con's voice from Paducah in my head. 73s Dave WA4FXT
Ah, yes, the AM gang on 75 meters. You guys were my first exposure to amateur radio, listening with my (AM) shortwave radio from Houston, Texas back in 1972. Can't wait to get back on the air and join you.
The R390 is significantly better than the SP600. It can hear a more wholesome chunk of signal at its maximum selectivity setting. Shown is an R390A. The mechanical filters undercut the audio quality but their square-wave sort of rolloff make the "A" more practical when conditions are congested.
Yeah, but the audio from a filter with a gentler shape is exquisite. I grew up with a Hammarlund HQ-129X in my parents' (father's) living room, along with a Johnson Viking II.
people are on here saying how great A.M sounds why dont we all form a net and give it a try....??? i would love to have a chat on A.M on any band ..A.M certainly does sound great and with a good audio quality too
Ohhh so wonderful !!! that's is hamradio old style ! great !!!
On my 20 years of hamradio operation unfortunately i have only one opportunity to listening ham operation on AM... many yrs a go on 10Mtrs... from a US ham operating an Hallycrafter rig....

I tell you, AM sound quality is way above that of narrow band FM, and I really don't know why people don't use it on say, 2 metres these days. It goes further too. Those guys have broadcast quality audio, and that shack of yours is amazing, REAL radio!!
For those non-hams on here that thunderstorm could have been hundreds if not thousands of miles away. In the spring and summer time on the 160, 80/75, and 40 meter bands the thunderstorms come through rather easily. In fact on field day I was told that I was probably not able to get any contacts on the 160 meter band. I got two, but I had to wait for a thunderstorm to move farther away though.
Beautiful rigs there. Reminds me of my SWLing as a kid, when the local hams had a net on 160 AM. I always liked the mode, it's a shame it's not used a lot more where it could be.
Ah,nothing like the warm glow from dial and tubes on a classic rig, keeps the shack nice and cosy on a cold night, thats amateur radio at its finest.73 Don VO1XH
Nice equipment! I miss the old AM days on amateur radio! Great sounding audio! I used to own and operate a Johnson Viking Valiant AM/CW transmitter back in the late 1960's and early 70's as well as Haliicrafters SX-101 and Hammerlund HQ-110 receiver. I was WA7IOK back in those days when I lived up in Oregon.
I used to run a Ranger with an SP-600 on 10M AM a lot. Miss both those rigs and now I'm getting interested in AM again. These guys have some great audio.
if anyone has a R-390 they want to get rid of, let me know. KB8GAQ.
