Nintendo 8bit NES had quite a bit difficult ones. I think i'd replace Contra with first Turtles, Robowarrior or Goonies II. How about Shadowgate? Nevertheless like your list. :) Not that Metroid, Master Blaster or Bionic Commando were easy either.. or Rygar! Man just too many. If looking of MMORPG's, Ultima Online definetely has quite brutal learning curve especially on PVP part.

I remember Battle Toads. Me and my cousin played it. At first we were like pretty cool that it has Co-Op.But then we realized there was a thing called friendly FUCKING FIRE. We hated each other for like days because we could not complete the third level. We then realized that the game was a piece of shit. I traded the game for a diglet pokemon card or something. It was totally worth it.

I remember that once I lend BATTLESTATIONS PACIFIC to my dad. He was cruising along whole map surprised where is he going. Then he managed to sink enemy light destroyer and he felt like- Aye, challenge completed! And quickly left the room. It took him more than 10 minutes to sink that destroyer. Difficult?

@Zzarcon1 sorry but i disagree, in games from say 2002-present (with few exeptions) 9/10 times you will lose/die not because of lack of skill but because of an outside factor like you say combat system or bad camera or some other design flaw . not to say old games are not flawed or even cheap at times but most of the time it's just you vs the game and when you die it's because your not good enough not beacuse enough factors went in your favour.

the most difficult games I played on the hardest mode and enjoyed it was Metal gear solid 2,3 and 4 and God of war 1 and 2. they are very challenging yet possible to win. unlike others that are impossible, purely base on luck and waste time.

My best was Metal gear solid 2(extreme mode) where they hide the bombs, took me few hours to find it.
