Went to the Hacienda in October 1989 it was a Thursday (student night) 10.30 I was introduced to the pulse, the heart beat that became known as Acid Music.... I saw a guy going mad on a podium, arms jolting to the rhythm of the beat of life, he was plugged in and from then on I was charged up too ! Mike Pickering, Graeme Park, Sasha - The guys on the door who I knew through their cousins.... The industrial fridge doors that, when opened, made you give sacrifice to the music - I miss those days

Sasha says he used to warm up for JDS and ruin his night by playing all his tunes, I used to do the same thing to Sasha at OZ in Blackpool, though I used to also drop some Ron Hardy & Blackpool mecca oldies like Slave and Atmosfear etc :-) People couldnt wait to get me off & him on :-) E'd up with Sasha
i am 100% sure this is bugsys in ashton because i was there and i bought the tape the following week and i still have it .i still listen to it every now and again. i was a bit confused to see it saying its the hacienda its definetley not.
Further to my post below. Check the link above - in his own words. He did warm-up slots before moving to Shelleys in '89. He did scratch, as most DJs did back then. The music was more eclectic back in those days
For everybody who says he didn't play there read the following.
Hacienda DJ and next door neighbour Jon Dasilva got Sasha a try-out at his favourite club: "I played from 11 to 12, of all the biggest records, a cappelas over everything, and scratching. I must have completely ruined his night!" says Sasha.
@littleandy77 Fair enough, I stand corrected. My memories(& tapes) say a spring 1990 debut, but we're all clocking on now I guess, so thanks for the info and quote. Some of us are mentioning Konspiracy as well.... The first time I saw him play there the decks were on wallpaper pasting tables in one of those tiny rooms, long before the clanging piano's killed the 'bleeps and beats'. That was late 89 as well, but major shady... Totally different vibe to the Hac' eh folks?
@APublicDomain To be perfectly honest I didn't think it was him either! I knew he did a few slots there but didn't think it was 89. Time (and other things!) take it's toll though. I remember Konspiracy - those little rooms (caves) were scary and the vibe was a little threatening. I had to laugh at people saying Sasha didn't scratch - they just think he played 15 minute Blue Amazon remixes I suppose! Like you say though, a bit of history - you can't take that awy from us.
Sasha was playing in the smallest room of Konspiracy in '89', working his way up. If this is 89, it'll be either Konspiracy or Bugsys in Ashton. That scratch on 'Young MC' was one of his tricks for sure, but this is pre Hac' and Shelleys I reckon.
Paul Cons was promotional genius who disappeared off the radar far too quickly. I last saw him in a Tesco supermarket in Rugby circa 1990 arguing with a queer.
ian brown said he was there this night, and straight after 12 o clock, some 1 got glassed,.he said it felt like the end of the good times,..fk ,i was only just findin out about it,..lol
young mc what a tune the hac what a place. 1989 what a time we had ....r i p hacienda...did you know that they turned it into flats....funnly called that hacienda
I can just about remember the late 80's early 90's, when we used to go out the music ws was house or rave and that coverd a hole spectrum of music that was being played back then. If you ask me that was much better than different DJ's playing there one style of tunes.
ha ha this is funny how all these people are saying its not Sasha!!!
Get a fucking clue, this exactly what he played for years and this is the stuff that made him into a legend - And yes, he used to screath a lot because that was the style then - 88-90 was heavily influenced by breaks, hence the hip-hop smaples thrown in.
Er, those questioning, did any of you ever go to Shelleys? Sasha could scratch and beat mix very well - it's basically what set him apart from other DJ's of the time. That and big big piano tunes. He made a BIG switch from those kind of tunes - northern pill anthems - to progressive house after binning Shelleys before residency at Rennaisance Mansfield. Other commenters have noted that there were other DJ's around doing similar things - Nipper's been mentioned. Vertigo was another.
to the dude who says whoever is just chopping up the start of young mc......have you heard the single or what?oooh it makes me mad, it's not the most tecnical of scratches but back in 89 it was pretty pioneering stuff, on the uk house scene anyway...
I really was there that night and for 20 years i thought it was Mr Greame Park bering in mind id had a yellow burger ,a disco biscuit and half a strawberry acid tab,if you live by the sword you sure as shit die by the sword. Parks,Sasha,Pickering who cares it was a special night i still remember like it was yesterday-20 years on.
It was GP or possibly even Steve Williams, but not Sash' or 'back-spin' Pickering (all great blokes/DJ's though). I too was there, all the time. Infact, I built the podium that lived in the centre of the dance floor in '89. I charged them £600 plus my name +1 on the guest list. Great times indeed.
Did anyone else go the night the bouncers got stabbed or shot and we all had to leave out the side door and walk through a tunnel of police riot shields? man that was crazy...everyone was off their rockers!
@fingy5515 Hahaha I remeber it very well, we'd trekked all the way from Leeds that night, managed to get in and about half an hour later all hell broke loose, we ended up spending the rest of the night tripping our bollocks off on saddleworth moor on the way back listening to the KLF's Chill Out with the sheep!!! lol, if I remember rightly it was a Salford crew who shot the bouncers.
@fingy5515 Yes i was there,It was over the control of the doors, back in the day if you had control of the bouncers?doors you had control of the Deals, seing it was £15-£20 for a pill £10 for phet,a lot of spondulies to made back then, for as Mad(chester) as it was, there has not been a party time like it since, shame the Warehouse days & the 24hr party people ended due to greed 7 gangsters!
I was there, it was great because they closed us in for ages and we continued to party for a couple more hours till we had to file out and face a barrage of riot police and dogs, crazy night.
lots of djs added rap songs to their sets because as im sure you all know 88 to 90 was a mix of anything which sounded good because there was no hardcore or defined house scene which fitted our uk thing! its such a shame that everything is labeled and sub categorised now!
all the breaks and the scratch are on the record yeah.. who does nt know young mc ?? know what im sayin!! :~) sasha chops it with the fader a little!!
Na bud, i've been to a few P & W nights back in the day.
As far as i was aware though, their was a 2nd Sasha(an imitator) who came on the scene a few years after the man hiself. He was no (real) DJ Sasha but used the same name..
yes this is Sasha. he used to play a lot of varied records when he used to come up from Wales to play the warehouse parties and clubs like the Hac. The first record is 'Know How' by Young Mc, which is a stone cold veritable classic and was played by all kinds house DJs like Oakie, Carl Cox etc who dropped a lot rap such as this King Bee, De La Soul, Hijack etc into old school acid house sets.
well said. I hadn't bothered looking at his age or where he was from. He's probably seen him DJ over the last few years in Oz and assumed he'd been playing trance and progressive house on his laptop since the 80s!
Let me tell you, Sasha was still DJing at Bugsy's in Ashton-Under-Lyne when this was so called done. If it's really him I'll show my arse in Harrods front window!
yeah he did, all the time as did everyone else at the time and he still does live sometime. it's just in the acid house days the breaks in the records were used more because they were playing such as varied amount of records
Hi def confirm this is Sasha.I have the full set from Dec 89 at the Hac and got the mix at the time.He was a warm up DJ at the venue plus he and S Williams took Hac nights around the N West in 1990 (Man Heights/Shaboo/Rickys etc)Its his scratch style where he roll repeat scatches the same beat or stops and scratches mid tune both styles you'll hear on loads of his mixes around 89-91.if you wana hear a really good example check out his first Eclipse set where he scatches Spectrum into The Tape.
hoorah, at least someone knows wot they r on about !! I have many tapes of Sasha when he played at Shellys in Stoke between 90 - 92. & have the video of NYE somewhere from inside Shelleys. That scratching of spectrum into the tape is awsome !! (Then black box accapella over the tape - THEM WERE THE DAYS!)
agreed - he can and did, plenty of scratches at Leeds Warehouse New Years Eve 1990. I'm not sure there are any live scratches on this outside the bit at 3.00
based on his current music? it was certainly his music at the time, he caned Know How and played at the Hacienda. Unless thedarpacheif knows othewise I would trust the poster
im sure this sasha mix was at shelleys

Parks,Sasha,Pickering who cares it was a special night i still remember like it was yesterday-20 years on.
subsub808 2 years ago 17
It was GP or possibly even Steve Williams, but not Sash' or 'back-spin' Pickering (all great blokes/DJ's though). I too was there, all the time. Infact, I built the podium that lived in the centre of the dance floor in '89. I charged them £600 plus my name +1 on the guest list. Great times indeed.

@fingy5515 Hahaha I remeber it very well, we'd trekked all the way from Leeds that night, managed to get in and about half an hour later all hell broke loose, we ended up spending the rest of the night tripping our bollocks off on saddleworth moor on the way back listening to the KLF's Chill Out with the sheep!!! lol, if I remember rightly it was a Salford crew who shot the bouncers.
pipkins1308 7 months ago
@fingy5515 Yes i was there,It was over the control of the doors, back in the day if you had control of the bouncers?doors you had control of the Deals, seing it was £15-£20 for a pill £10 for phet,a lot of spondulies to made back then, for as Mad(chester) as it was, there has not been a party time like it since, shame the Warehouse days & the 24hr party people ended due to greed 7 gangsters!

I was there, it was great because they closed us in for ages and we continued to party for a couple more hours till we had to file out and face a barrage of riot police and dogs, crazy night.

there are no scratches on young mc. it starts with a straight beat, thats a live scratch. fuck knows if its sasha or not and tbh who cares
snodin99 2 years ago
lots of djs added rap songs to their sets because as im sure you all know 88 to 90 was a mix of anything which sounded good because there was no hardcore or defined house scene which fitted our uk thing! its such a shame that everything is labeled and sub categorised now!
bobbitt187 2 years ago 3
all the breaks and the scratch are on the record yeah.. who does nt know young mc ?? know what im sayin!! :~) sasha chops it with the fader a little!!
bobbitt187 2 years ago
Their were 2 sasha'a mind one the REal one DJ Sash Manchester, the other was a coloured fella..
which one this is i dunno, but DJSM changed his sytle to go a bit softer about 91, and was still quality.
bomberzak 2 years ago
You're getting confused with Parks & Wilson I think....
mickeymusicstar 2 years ago
Na bud, i've been to a few P & W nights back in the day.
As far as i was aware though, their was a 2nd Sasha(an imitator) who came on the scene a few years after the man hiself. He was no (real) DJ Sasha but used the same name..
bomberzak 2 years ago
this isn't Sasha. He wouldn't play this crap.
StAllawah 2 years ago
yes this is Sasha. he used to play a lot of varied records when he used to come up from Wales to play the warehouse parties and clubs like the Hac. The first record is 'Know How' by Young Mc, which is a stone cold veritable classic and was played by all kinds house DJs like Oakie, Carl Cox etc who dropped a lot rap such as this King Bee, De La Soul, Hijack etc into old school acid house sets.

How would you know what Sasha was playing in 1989 when you were 7 and from Australia? lol
outy1978 2 years ago
well said. I hadn't bothered looking at his age or where he was from. He's probably seen him DJ over the last few years in Oz and assumed he'd been playing trance and progressive house on his laptop since the 80s!

Hi def confirm this is Sasha.I have the full set from Dec 89 at the Hac and got the mix at the time.He was a warm up DJ at the venue plus he and S Williams took Hac nights around the N West in 1990 (Man Heights/Shaboo/Rickys etc)Its his scratch style where he roll repeat scatches the same beat or stops and scratches mid tune both styles you'll hear on loads of his mixes around 89-91.if you wana hear a really good example check out his first Eclipse set where he scatches Spectrum into The Tape.
indexia69 3 years ago 2
hoorah, at least someone knows wot they r on about !! I have many tapes of Sasha when he played at Shellys in Stoke between 90 - 92. & have the video of NYE somewhere from inside Shelleys. That scratching of spectrum into the tape is awsome !! (Then black box accapella over the tape - THEM WERE THE DAYS!)

Are you sure it's not DJ Nipper? He used to scratch like this...
mickeymusicstar 3 years ago
Actually Sasha can scratch like that, but most of the scratches are on Young MCs track Know How.
woodalldaniel 3 years ago
agreed - he can and did, plenty of scratches at Leeds Warehouse New Years Eve 1990. I'm not sure there are any live scratches on this outside the bit at 3.00
sohosq 3 years ago
ok i wasnt in the scene back then. ~
but im sure this isnt Sasha
rossmorris 3 years ago
based on his current music? it was certainly his music at the time, he caned Know How and played at the Hacienda. Unless thedarpacheif knows othewise I would trust the poster
