  • But OOOOOhhhhhhh NOoooooo They didnt wanna stop the Smoking ....

  • this makes me drowsy

  • love Billy Collins

  • Ah, how I miss the freedom to smoke whenever I want.

This poem gives me a little hope that someday, I'll be able to smoke without fear or judgmental eyes upon me.

  • ISAWATIT!

  • The poem itself is great, the video to the poem makes it ever more real. Thanks.

  • now,im seriously going out to get one

  • The only true weakness is habit, since when it forms, we struggle so to break it. As Beckett said, "Habit is the ballast that chains the dog to his vomit". Cigarettes are, for me, a symbol of this humanity and vulnerability. For when, in a drunken stupor, i feel the butt rest upon my lips, i know, with certainty, that my commitment, my better judgment, my reason and my will have been broken by desire.

  • @MicahIsser Ahh, spoken like a true addict.. Good luck

  • @MicahIsser Addiction is when ''will'' is overcome by ''want''. When you start smoking out of curiosity or whatever reason, you choose to smoke, until after some time you need the cigarette. Desire always breaks reason.

I've always thought it's a very odd phenomenon that people are scared of a virus that kills 35 people, but at the same time smoke themselves to death.

  • OMG

  • what a dark voice =.=

  • Then maybe a cigarette.

  • I would like to have a glass of a fine red wine with Noahthebeast09 and unclejuniorsoprano.

  • Yeah, but how many people mix their marijuana with tobacco and how many people that smoke marijuana also smoke cigarettes? And don't fool yourself, introducing any type of smoke into your lungs is bad for you. All smoke inherently contains carcinogens (i.e. the number one cause of cancer in humans).

  • ohi can't wait any longer! Rescue meh from my boredom

  • What a beautiful poem. Shame on those who attack tobacco companies! There isn't a single shred of evidence that proves that cigarettes are bad for your health. On the contrary, they are actually GOOD for you. They help you think better and improve the circulation. The world's oldest people were all smokers. Look at George Burns and Milton Berle; they smoked cigars right into their 90s. We started out on candy cigs, then progressed to the genuine article. You can't beat a good cigarette!

  • @unclejuniorsoprano

it's okay to say you like smoking cigarettes but saying they are good for you is just nonsense

  • @Spoinkie There is so much you need to learn. When I was a boy, smoking marijuana was so bad that it'd turn you into a madman; e.g., "Reefer Madness." The penalty for having even a single seed was a felony that would land you in prison for years. Now, smoking pot is not only legal, but also good for you. Ever hear of "medical marijuana?"

The same is even more true for smoking cigars and cigarettes. If you want to live a long life, take up smoking or at least chew tobacco. Now, go light up.

  • @unclejuniorsoprano

The same thing is not true for cigarettes or cigars and there are mountains of scientific evidence proving that they are directly connected to a number of fatal diseases including cancer. that same parallel can't be drawn with marijuana

  • @Spoinkie Dear Spookie:

You are a fool! Scientific evidence is bullshit. It can be twisted to show anything you want it to be. I can show you MOUNTAINS of evidence to show that marijuana is a kill in a mountain of ways. The government should completely outlaw tobacco if it's really a killer, just like it banned DDT. The result of banning DDT is the death of millions of Africans from malaria.

Smoking is GOOD for you. Now, go ahead and light up one up for your Uncle Junior!

  • I agree the government should outlaw tobacco so people like me can sell it illegally and make a good some of money.

  • Dear Noahthebeast09: Well stated, only I believe you meant "sum" and not "some." Anyway, it's heartwarming to see intelligent people such as yourself making the right decisions in life. Unfortunately, in your case, the government won't outlaw cigarettes. There's too much tax $ to lose. Besides, in addition to being an illegal alien, Obama would be guilty of illegal possession of a salubrious substance.

  • Well thank you sir, yeah the government makes too much money of tobacco to make it illegal, but political pressure from groups wanting to ban tobacco will only rise, and maybe 30 years from now people will start to make tobacco illegal in certain states I bet.

The American public is becoming way more anti-tobacco and cities are instituting many outdoor bans and banning smoking in bars, believe me when I say there will be a huge sum of money to be made when cigs become illegal.

  • Dear Noahthebeast09: You are a clear thinker and seem to understand the leviathan that government has become. I think the tobacco companies should make Obama the poster boy for cigarettes. It's OK for me to keep an illegal alien in my home, but I could go to jail for keeping a box of Cuban cigars!

  • It's quite hard for the government to track Cuban cigars, I mean you could easily tear the Cuban label of the cigars and replace them with American ones, as for the illegal aliens we already screwed up in not securing our border and getting them out while trying to maintain a well maintained border over a couple thousand miles is near impossible.

I think if we cut trade with China and increased trade with Mexico, we could help Mexico's economy and reduce the need for making them hop our border.

  • Dear Noahthebeast09 : Ours is the only government that cannot control its own borders. Like cigarettes, it's all a matter of dirty politics. On 1 hand smoking is a legal product. On the other, smokers are treated like criminals. They will throw you in jail for so much as smoking on the beach. As for ILLEGALS, DemocRATs want amnesty for their votes. As for Cuban cigars, the government IS able to track them; just as they track counterfeiters. What's right/wrong depends on who has the power.

  • Whats right or wrong depends on who has the most money, money says whats right or wrong, because if one political party has more money than the other then they can pay for more commercials advertising, and have more voice, so were both the wrong immoral wierdos because our point of view is underfunded and unpopular, it is unpopular to support smokers rights, even though I'm a nonsmoker.

I can't stand either of the two political parties, the dems/reps are both part of an anti freedom coalition.

  • Not true tobacco kills over 425,000 people per year in the U.S alone, my step-grandfather nearly died from a heart attack from using tobacco.

Marijuana use alone has not been linked to a single death in recorded history.

  • Well I don't think they are good. But they are not as bad as people say. 7 cigarettes per day wont do ja anythin

  • and this is how much the cigarette companies have addicted you fools

  • Yeah because Billy Collins is going to work for the cigarette companies. Why dont you actually listen to the poem and find out what he is actually saying in the poem.

  • @JohnnyZina just like a typical non smokers attitude.... smokers dont have any rights in this contry any more.. cause people like you. If u dont like the video dont watch and comment. This video should be called "Another Perfect Cigarette Ruined By A Non-Smoker" ill quit because i have to...not because i want to.

  • just dont smoke to much :)

  • yup all about moderation.

  • did he get a big commision from phillip morris??

  • In fact he implies that he stopped smoking in the line: "Having sent my last one out a car window (...) years ago".

  • the best cigarette is after a big meal...the kind of meal that you can't move your ass after, so you just sit on the couch and light up one...

  • if you smoke and dont have any, stop smoking then!

  • If you live, the probability of dying is 100%. Some people smoke, others like racing cars, climbing mountains, skiing, scuba diving and all manner of risk taking. All can result in injury or premature death but if they get some satisfaction out of it so be it. It's not the years you put into your life, but the life you put into your years.

  • That, Is by far the greatest way to put anything! I've ever heard!!!

  • @Xyndrone23 Right of your mouth...

  • cool... really cool :)

  • Awesome poem, soothing graphics

  • really great graphics.. sweet video

  • yeah..! smoke while you drinking cofee..!

    the best.!!!

  • This actually reminds me of my best cigarettes - those nights during my last year in college when I would stay up late trying to complete my assignments on my laptop on the kitchen table while brewing the coffee - I still can not recreate the satisfaction I would get from those cigarettes.

  • Why is there any discussion about pros and cons of smoking?

Maybe I'm missing the point, but I am pretty sure this is poetry.

    Discuss that instead.

  • This is f'ing cool, nice work :)

  • The best cigarette is the one I stuck in my dick-hole this one time on groundhog's day.

  • eww!! bet you still smoked it aswell dirty bastard =D

  • ROFLMFAO!!

  • titties at 0:14

  • i say do what you want. if you want to smoke, smoke. if you don't want to smoke, don't smoke. if you want to be fat, be fat. if you want to lose weight, lose weight.

  • so which is the best ciggarette?

  • You were waiting for a brand name weren't you? You consumerist bastard.

  • prince from sweden 0.9 nickotin somthing

  • I am 129 Years old and the wiser choice of my life is to be a smoker. Too bad i realize that i prefer Dunhill than Camel only at the age of 93. Keep walking, keep smoking

  • GO CAMEL FILTERS OOH YA!

  • I love this video and the conjuring of the smoke. I love that it is about the "task" aspect of writing and the pleasure of finishing the thing that was written.

  • I really liked the animation, however wished that the voice over was less robotic.

  • Billy Collins' tone is beautiful and wry. You will understand when you're older, perhaps.

  • I concur!

  • There appears to be some confusion about what's going on in the poem. The man quit and is talking about the desperate longing for something that was enjoyed years before. For him, it was a cigarette, but the poem is not only about smoking, it's about nostalgia. Beautiful and touching. Perhaps I'll go have my own nostalgic moment over a cigarette.

  • Boo. You stole from Hicks.

  • He was such a cranky grouch while quitting. Still an amazing poet, though. Nostalgia, like wine, tastes better with a cigarette. I think I'll join you.

  • Why bother.

Waste of money, and anyone that doesn't have enough sense to see that hasn't been raised right.

  • Jeez, I gonna have one right now :D

  • quit smoking guys -_-;; why risk it

  • why risk what?

  • you know, IT

  • non smokers should in fact want other people to smoke. assuming you are rarely in secondhand smoke environments, other people smoking saves you money. smokers die earlier and collect less government benefits.

  • Really? Stop eating meat. Stop drinking soda. Stop driving fast cars. Man, who gives a fuck? Live your life...

  • I have something to tell you non-smokers that I know for a fact that you don't know, and I feel it's my duty to pass on information at all times. Ready?.... Non-smokers die every day. Enjoy your evening. See, I know that you entertain this eternal life fantasy because you've chosen not to smoke, but let me be the 1st to pop that bubble and bring you hurling back to reality... You're dead too.

  • Boo. You stole from Hicks.

  • Something to tell you, smokers die every day, most of them due to smoking related illnesses, no we non smokers are not immortal, but as long as we have a relativelt healthy life we will face no smoking related health problems and be healthier, and not DIE from smoking which man smokers do.

  • lol ur an idiot. ur response didnt prove anything let alone have an arguable point

  • Vegetarians live 3% longer than meat-eaters, but you don't care about that because you're just spewing 5th grade propaganda about smoking.

We all know smoking is a horrible addiction, so go eat your antibiotic and steroid infested hamburger, and I'll go smoke my carcinogenic mini-stick of doom. See you in the graveyard.

  • 5th grade propaganda about smoking? You mean heavily proven research, you obviousley do not know what your talking about, if you think that is 5th grade propaganda i suggest you go do some research, the vegetarian thing is not proven and if you haven't realised meat (some meat) in the right amount is healthy for you and a source of protein for a balanced diet, cigarettes are not healthy for you.

  • ill kill you one day u dumb fuck. did u know that cigarettes have 1000 chemicals? well did u know coffe has 1500 or the fact that ratposion(sp?) has 30. theres some of your 5th grade propaganda you high school looser. you fucking cocksucker. go kill yourself.

  • Okay so we all hear about smokers dying everyday, what about all the non-smokers that die everyday.

I say live fun die young, i dont regret taking up smoking, we're all gonna die some day may aswell live with motivations.
