@clewi1091 - Definitely edited some stuff out... I heard that some of it was just cut out by the network sensors because it was too 'inappropriate'... stuff that would probably have made it in easily today.
@Yellyist -This is because after he served as Lyndon Johnson's vise president he once again became Minnesota senator from January 3, 1971 to January 13, 1978 (his death). He was currently serving as senator at the time of the taping of this program.
@verytallone ok. well. They always adress a higher offical servant by his highest rank, and Vice President Humprey was a Vice president that`s why i think he should be adressed as mr. Vice president. Cause it outranks a senator.
Granted I was 100% correct He was in the Cannonball Run 2, As the drunk fisherman in the boat. Jack Elam was in both films as Dr.Nicholas Van Helsing Professor of proctology and other related Tendencies, Graduate of the university of Rangoon and so on.......
71superbee3 I am in complete agreement, I am from the UK and up until tonight I only ever knew Foster Brooks in the cannonball run, I found these clips on here by accident and I have not laughed so much for a very long time. The film did not do him justice.
This kind of subtlety and camaradie is what's missing in the roasts I've seen these days. When I see this kind of humor and approach I want to kick Lisa Lampanelli off of a bridge someplace.
Foster was definitely "one of a kind". There can never be another like him, that mold was shattered upon his arrival. Anyone who can have an audience in stitches without saying a word has real talent. He was and will be sorely missed. I'm just sorry I never got to see you while you were still living. At least there is YouTube. Thank you, YouTube.
@Stinkyjig No, I mean there's a clear edit at the very end that had Martin bouncing up against the wall. It was taken out and the last laugh from the joke we heard was doubled up.
This roast is the first time I ever saw Foster Brooks go out of character while still on the podium. Whatever he said at the end that made everyone, including Dean, laugh so hard...Foster is smiling. It's amazing how he physically looks so drunk while doing his shtick. He was comic genius:-)
@BuddyNovinski Watch Foster Brooks roasting Don Rickles! He's hysterical. Also watch his skit with Dean Martin as an airline pilot. You can't stop laughing:-)
@clipper321 HuBird was a real ASS and a war criminal as an accomplice of and apologist for his boss, LBJ. Now Brooks and the Hump are both gone. The world is a poorer place without Foster Brooks.
If you go back a quite a few comments.. apparently when Dean Martin went to shake Foster Brooks's hand at the beginning of the roast he had turned round to meet HHH so Dean nearly stuck his hand up Fosters ass!
The only other man to make Dean laugh so easily was Frank Gorshwin when he did his Burt Lancaster impersonation.
At the end, rumor had it that he farted at the end. Take a closer look at the end and see poor forster standing near his seat looking a little embarrassed. And Hubert is asking or saying something to the comedian next to him. But again it is just a rumor.
These shows were highly edited. The "cut-a-way" of Martin laughing so hard might have lifted from any part of the program and might have been used once or twice during the full hour. Brooks is absolutely great here. HHH was a great Senator who I met a few times in Minnesota.
@SidFortune no, hes shaking foster's hand so it had something to do with the end of his bit. I just wish I knew what it was. I am wondering if it was edited out of the TV broadcast and never made it to tape/DVD
This is pure comedic genius at work . You don't need to use profanity and sexual references to make people laugh like comedians do now a days . I love old school , classic comedy with the likes of Foster , Rich Little , Phyllis Diller , Bill Cosby , George Carlin , Moms Mably , Johnny Carson , et all !
"Who voted for Nick'n...Nixon" and "had voted for Hummmmmmm......had voted for Humm Hummmmmmmm.........for the Senator..." had me in tears, laughing so hard my sides hurt!!
I'm dying to know what the last joke was. They tried to make it look like the laughter was from the line about paying off broads but something else was said or done because Dean was standing up in the next shot and we never saw him stand up. It must have been a beaut because everyone is hysterical.
The line about sending the residents of a burning Watts a truckload of marshmallows puts me away every time. Hard to find anything as funny as this one.
It's not just the comic timing, nor the funny lines, nor the perfect parody of a drunk, but the ability to keep a straight face and stay 'in character' while EVERYONE within earshot is horizontal with laughter that makes a brilliant comedian - and Foster Brooks was one of those. Superb.
@mozman1111 Oh, you're so absolutely right! All the prerequisites you mention were crucial to his comedy, but everyone knows laughter is infectious. How the hell Mr. Brooks kept a straight face is more than I'll ever know!
Pure comedy. No vulgarity needed. Watch as he simply stands there and without saying a word has people laughing almost uncontrollably. How I miss you Foster. Rest in peace.
@71superbee3 ... Yes, indeed. Your few words capture my feelings precisely. Today's entertainers don't have "it," and when you don't have "it," you have to scrape the proverbial "bottom of the barrel," thus all the vulgarity and cheapness they often need to use. God bless the "old timers," and yes, Foster Brooks, too.
Notice how after his introduction by Dean a measurable amount of time passes before he speaks and yet he is able to garner the laughter he does. A sign of anticipation of what will follow and truly a sign of just how great Foster Brooks was at his craft.
Wow~Foster was at his all-time best, here."He thought Barry Goldwater was a Urologist"! I thought Dean Martin was going to fall over at the end of this routine.BRILLIANT!
@fredblassie123 C`mon, get with it! Foster made a career out of being an intoxicated man who was trying NOT to act drunk.A brilliant character but, RELAX! it was just an act.
How'd they get Vice president Humphrey on the roast? Laugh-In wanted him on their show, but he didn't,because he thought that he was going to get splashed.
Actually, the man who ran Humphrey's '68 campaign was Larry O'Brien. O'Brien was a Kennedy strategist, LBJ's Postmaster General and DNC chairman. It was HIS office that got broken into at the Watergate complex.
@MegaObserver1 Yeah, this was just a comedy routine Foster Brooks made up to make people laugh on the Dean Martin celebrity roast. Its not to be taken literally
I was in junior high when Foster Brooks started doing his Celebrity Roast appearances, and I grew tired of his drunk routine, because I was only watching him for that reason. Watching these Youtube clips now I realize his talent was much greater. His jokes were always original, clever, extremely funny, and delivered wonderfully. I'm glad Youtube has allowed me fully appreciate his comedy genious now!
Dean Martin roasts were a national treasure. Where else could you see the most important political and social figures of the day ridiculed good-naturedly by such incredibly talent satirists? @jmccuen I'm with you, that had to take practice, and it was what made the routines that much funnier. A true professional, we shall never see his like again.
Foster Brooks was a great comedian. And Hubert Humphrey is one of the finest public servants America has ever produced. He was a decent, compassionate man who would have been a superb president. I say this, in rebuttal to the person who has described him here as "evil."
@ShermansAlley What is evident to me, that even at that time, Hollywood's very leftist proclivities. They hated Nixon from the time he brought down Alger Hiss and Helen Douglass.
Like 01RUBZ, I too want to know what Brooks said at the end that got Dean Martin in hysterics. It was not as MAGOS369 stated "Cause I'm the one who paid 'em all off." There is editing at 05:19 when Hubert Humphrey takes to the screen. LAFFTHERAPY, do you have the 05:19 portion of the tape to post? I would love to hear what he said that got everyone rolling in such laughter.
Foster Brooks was one of the all time greatest stand up comics ever. Never before or since has an act like this been this funny. I met him in 1974 when I was 9. He was a wonderful man and a genius comic.
I can't even do this half as good . . . when I'm piss drunk. The guy's timing was genius. And it kills me each time seeing Dean Martin lose it . . . even before Foster begins talking.
it's a bit..... he was in an eara that was the best in show biz. these people entertianed !!!!!!! Look at the end of this bit. he's taking bows. a lost art.

This guy is genius, period - one of the best comics ever. Notice how the crowd was out of control with laughter before he even spoke!

One would need to include Jonathan Winters to that list.

I can't even do this half as good . . . when I'm piss drunk. The guy's timing was genius. And it kills me each time seeing Dean Martin lose it . . . even before Foster begins talking.

Dean went to shake Foster's hand not realizing that Foster turned to Senator Humphrey to shake his. So he almost ended up shaking his butt.
