the worse thing of our generation is that now nobody does anything for free...this song is so sweet, she plays piano in such an amazing way, I wish I could have seen her once...
It's funny how this is one of those songs that encapsulates a thought and feeling you've had, but never know if anyone else had it, and this song captures it so perfectly (well not the whole limousine part), but the experience of seeing someone "play real good for free."
Amazing talent and a very special and humble song. When she sings, you are right there as bit player in the scenario, caught in the headlights of her words and melodies, what marvellous piano virtuosity.
check out her recent remake of Amelia with the Herbie Hancock orchestra if you need further proof. Stan the Man from Donaghadee
I honestly don't think there's a greater musical talent in her generation than Joni Mitchell. Heartbreaking lyrics, stunning voice, phenomenal melodies, and complete originality. She is like no other, now or ever.
i usually care a lot about the voice or playing skills but when the lyrics are as amazing as joni mitchell's...i wouldn't care even if she sang like a whale. i fell in love with her. i discovered her in Love Actually, but i was, i guess too young to appreciate her
I have often thought about this song, but could not remember the title. I don't know why I searched for it tonight. I'm glad I did. It is better than I remembered. Now to buy the download somewhere. I'll have to come back to this collection in the future.
Joni is an extraordinary artist with a beautiful voice as well as being a superb guitarist & pianist & has composed some of the most poignant lyrics & gorgeous melodies ever written.
Funny, how if YouTube had existed back when Joni started, she'd have had a gazillion subscribers & even more comments here on this delicately penned, meaningful, selfless song.
I still hear this song in my head after all these years- like so many of other of Joni's songs. LIke decades ago, listening to this extraordinary talented artist makes me get through the blues of this holiday season, like it did 40 years ago. Thank you Joni. You have no idea how many persons you helped ease through difficult periods.

I am so thankful I grew up in a time when songs like this were the music of the day. This is what sincerity in music is all about.

A musician and songwriter, seldom found nowadays, among the mindless drivel churned from the itunes toilet.

Happy to find this video. This song always evokes my daughter Gillian (1975-2001), with her long blonde hair and her clarinet.

For Free has always been one of my favorite songs and the message remains as one my guiding lights in a world that is often crazy and confused.
