I'll say this...I think Ricky Bell "grew into" and developed his voice over time to the point where he became a very good vocalist. It was right around the Heartbreak album/the first BBD album where he hit that "lead singer" level. You can tell that the command over his voice wasn't quite there in the earlier New Edition years...in my opinion, that is.
Ricky was NE's lead singer before they got a record deal & MStarr (& later MCA) decided to push Ralph to the forefront because his voice sound more like a young MJ's which in part pissed BBrown off as he wanted (deserved) just as many leads as Ralph afterall NE was BBrown's group that he originally started.
Ricky's voice has always been on point given that he was the oldest in the group his voice was almost fully mature when NE hit the scene with Candy Girl.

Ricky is very undertated and talented as well. When Ray Parker Jr wrote Mr Telephone Man, he had Bobby sing the lead and most of the leads because Ralph couldnt hit the notes he was looking for.
This song(which had a little pop sound to it, but i like it),and Still in Love With You, were underrated and should had done better on the charts as well on the radio.

@magicalochild it wasnt that underrated it was there only debute album at number one on both reg and r&B charts, it kinda surprised me when i found out cuase i always thought they had at least one mreo album go number 1.
