HDD motor's are 3 phase, he connected up just one coil which means that he had to give the motor a little push by hand to start it up. The coil is connected to his amplifier which is connected to his computer. On the computer you can use Cooledit or a similar application to generate a raw wave signal. I've been fiddling with those motors in the past too.

The platters on a hard disk are usually mounted by three screws on top of the middle ring on the platters. Each platter is separated with spacers.

how did you remove the spindle? the ones that I have are firmly attached. I think i'm missing something.

Did you look underneath the platters? That's where the screws will be, if any. Some new drives have the motors built as part of the casing.
