  • Thumbs up for the There Will Be Blood soundtrack.

  • I used to love playing this game....

When my ship took damage....I would try to ejaculate into space just before it blew up. I did not always ejaculate in time :(

  • OMG STAR RAIDERS! I played this on an Atari 400 when I was a kid. Wow....

  • i always died randomly on the SNES version ¬¬

  • Really cool first part. Cool to hear Privateer mentioned, I'd almost forgotten about that game and it's sequal.

  • I think the Wing commander game is the Amiga CD32 version

  • It's not. It's the original PC version played via DosBOX. :) The music in the intro though is a remix.

  • @rvcontre78

Actually it's George Oldziey's re-orchestrated version from the Kilrathi Saga version of WC1.

  • Wow, where did you find that awesome remix of the Wing Commander theme?

  • Sounds like its from the Kilrathi Saga version?

  • I forgot to mention Starglider 2 inb 1988, which would be one of the better counterexamples of space combat sims in the late '80's.(albeit with surface levels as well).

And, collaborating with Nintendo, Argonaut Software would produce Star Fox for the SNES, along with the Super FX coprocessor wich went on to be used in many other SNES games.

  • You also forgot to mention 'Starluster' for the nes.

Possibly the greatest space combat game till WC.

  • There were also similar following games to Star Raider like Mattel's (Intellivoice) Space Spartans and simpler Space Battle (Space Attack on the 2600 and intended to be a BSG game) and iMagic's Star Voyager for the 2600. (unrelated to the later NES game)

As well as the often critisized Star Voyager for the NES by Acclaim and Argonaut Software's Starglider, both in 1986.

I also noticed that you used the SNES (or Sega?) version of Wing Commander rather than the DOS one.

  • Wow, I wasn't aware of Starglider. That's off the map for me. :)

    Nice!

Also, I didn't use the SNES version for any of the WC clips. If you're judging from the music it's because I used a remix of the original.

  • I only found out about it when reading about the development of the original Star Fox, only Starglider 2 made it to DOS on the PC. (prior to the devlopment of Star Fox, I beleive they also had a prototype of the first game running on the NES)

  • On the MUsic, I recently found a clip on youtube of "Wing Commander .1"

The Graphics looked slightly improved and the sound was a bit different, but the music was dramatticly better. (similar to the remix you used)

I think this was the 1994 re-release on CD titled "Wing Commander I"

Also I checked out the Sega CD version and don't much care for their change in music or the voice acting.

  • You forgot....STARLUSTER.

That WAS Wing commander until the real thing came out, but only in Japan.

  • Oh, neat, I wasn't aware of that one.

  • Thanks for the tip. I looked up some info on Starluster. Definitely interesting! I also looked up some videos on Youtube and noticed that you had just found out about it 5 months ago. So I'm not really that late am I? :)

  • LOL, no you're not late.

I was REAL surprised when I found it and even more so when it turned out to be a very good attempt for an 8 bit system. I play it on the GBA so it looks even better on a small screen.

In case this has slipped you by then you HAVE to try 'Wing Commander Standoff'.

Its a just completed mod for WC special ops. Special Ops is free and with this mod it becomes a 50 level game with sim levels AND bloom HDR FX,all for free.

Check the vids on here, its VERY nice and freeware.

  • Star Raiders looks a lot like the space section of Ultima I which was out in 1980-81 if I'm not mistaken.

  • As much of an Ultima fan as I am I've never been all the way through Ultima I. I'm only loosely familiar with the space section of it. But the clips in the vid are from the 2600 version or the pictures from the 400/800 version made in 1979.

I guess I'm confused by the intent of the comment.

  • Great Research on other games in comparison to Wing Commander. You should do more! I like it =)

  • Thanks! Yeah, I've go the audio all done for the rest of this series (parts 4-6 or 7) which should be up this week or so. I'm still deciding which game to do next. Suggestions are welcome! :)
