  • The 6 people who disliked this video listens to Justin Bieber and lady gaga

  • The film was Take Me Back to Oklahoma (1940). Bob Wills would record his most famous record, "San Antonia Rose" in 1941. He would later appear with Russell Hayden in a Columbia series and also with Charles Starrett in his Durango Kid movies.

  • He seems effeminate to me just a bit!

  • @TheDuggero

Maybe so, but did you notice the sock puppet in his pants?

  • Awesome sound.... But is he packin a pistol??? That would be the ONLY time I have ever seen someone play the fiddle with a gun at the same time lol

  • MrUranus : thats the sweet sounds of a Lap Steelguitar. Awesome clip !!!

  • i recently found out that bob wills had the hot's for my grandma and used to get off stage to go dance with 'ethel' ha aparently the grew up together :) whata small world

  • Hot Fiddler-- Bob was the first to brace Judge Hay about 39. Pee Week King went nose to nose with Hay in 40 or 41. Bob and the Honorable Ol' Judge never failed to battle. In the late 30s, Judge Hay needed theTexas Playboys. By 49, Bob needed the Opry promotion, as Johnnie Lee at Tulsa and Billy Jack at Sacramento were much stronger than Bob. Starting about 1937, I probably heard 90% of KVOO broadcasts for Bob and Johnnie, with Leon on KTUL after 45. Saw Billy in 87. Saw all hundreds of times.

  • once your in texas bob wills is still the king.

  • The guy on the left with thelittleguitar thing in his lap ismy great grandfather!!

  • Leon McAuliffe? Wow!!

  • That isn't Gene Cronover, is it? I played with him.

  • The lefty fiddle player "Joe Holley" is my grandpa..

  • what did you do? run around youtube looking for Papaw??? LOL

  • @sonicgauge1 Bob is my great great great uncle.

  • @sonicgauge1 he seems like a nice and fun guy...

  • @arlichar11 He really is..

  • these guys did not fuck around...

  • Truer words were never spoken.

  • yeah that marijuana thing is pretty random... lol

  • You gotta give these guys a lot of credit by making music without ANY electronics. Pure music, I tell ya!!

  • im all for that, but buddy on the left is playing a lapsteel...

  • Well, they were one of the first bands to use the electric guitar, so that's not quite true...

  • Sure as shit...about 1:35 listen close. You hear "Marijuana!"

Kind of odd for this time period, but some were tokin' it up back then.

  • omfg lol that's so funny!!! s

  • I never know how to take Bob wills -these old clips are great they give another dimension to my music collection. One minute you think hes a serious musician next moment he's doing his silly jig and always with that inane grin on his face- too bad he missed out on playing the Joker in Batman!.Thanks for the post. Jim.

  • Bob Wills could make you laugh; cry, or dance...all within 5 minutes of ea. other! I saw some of the Playboys, incl. Johnny Gimble, as the house band for "Best Lil' Whorehouse in Texas", around '79. The band was as good as the play.

  • no disrespect to Bob Wills here, but at the very end of the clip it sure sounds like that bearded guy is hollering "Marijuana"

  • "Bob Wills is still the King."

  • Aint that the truth.

  • That's my great uncle on the right! He played with Bob Wills when they were the ArnspigerWills band and The Doughboys. It's so exciting to see this clip!!! I have to show my dad!

  • I mean left! Sorry!

  • Which one is Leon Mcauliffe?

  • sitting, with the steel in his lap

  • wow, awesome! my grandfather loved these guys, and it's nice to remember him when i hear this music. btw, bob wills deserves major kudos for being the first to bring drums onstage at the grand ole opry. they told him "no", and he pretty much said he wouldn't go on without his drummer. bad-ass!

  • Actually it was 1949 and he agreed to compromise and have the drums set up behind the back curtain. Then, at the last minute, Bob ordered the drummer to move the drums out in front of the curtain, and history was made!

  • His first Opry date was late '38 or '39. With town promotions, county/state fairs, rodeos and other bandstand and grandstand appearances --- I saw Bob, Johnnie Lee and Leon's bands perform at least 500 times and heard 90% of their radio shows for 16 years. Every trip to the Opry and the first Hollywood trips were big deals. The big surprise was Bob changing "uniforms" after the western movies appeared. Several musicians objected, feeling it labeled them as hicks.

  • "Best in the west"...who can doubt it.

  • i think michael jackson stole his moon walk from old bob.

  • HA! I never thought of it like that...lol

  • Watching Leon McAuliffe on that little 6 string Hawaiian guitar.....awesome!

  • great post. that wasn't bob playing by the way. I believe it to be either keith coleman or johnny gimble. considering the date, most likely the former.

  • Says who? Johnny Gimble didn't join the Texas Playboys until 1949, and Keith Coleman was an even later addition (c. 1953). This film was made in 1940, when Leon McAuliffe was still with the band, and yes, that is Bob Wills playing the Lone Star Rag.

  • Just ask Waylon, or Willie, and they will be the first to say that Bob Wills is still the King of Texas Swing!

  • this is just like a bluegrass standard called Stones Rag...that cool!!

  • it's the same tune, just called lone star in Texas.

  • Hey, did I see him almost do a moon walk ?

  • That is great! Thanks a lot.

  • Oh my god, that was Tex Ritter who made the comment "That they are the best in the west". For some of the youngsters, Tex was John Ritter's (three's company) Father.
