im still a little confused, can this be treated long-term? Like what happens to someone who has this as a child? Is it hurting them everytime it happens or is it just a space out?
@yankeeschamps2010 I had these spells as a child. I could tell when they were coming on. I would start to relax and everything would go bright white. It was very warm and relaxing, but coming out of them was not fun. It usualy involved drool and a bit of teasing.
@yankeeschamps2010 Treatment and prognosis depend on whether the absence seizures are the main or only component of a seizure disorder - like in Childhood Absence Epilepsy - or if they're just one of several different types of seizures the child suffers from, like in most other epileptic disorders. In the first case, most children outgrow CAE. In the latter cases, outcome is extremely varied and yes, seizures often have long-term effects on brain organisation and functionality.
i had that kind alot b4,nobody belives me,they think im faking 2 get out of school or something.im NOT faking!! and like i said im annoyed of people making fun of me,i see alot of videos of people faking it and it makes me mad!
im epilepic and i have at least 1 seizure a day and ive had all the seizures known, and it is very seirous,im SICK AND TIRED of people making fun of them. its mean innapropite ect! thank you for seeing the other side to all of u who see the other side. i was born with epilepsy and so far have it forever, they have yet found a med that works 4 me.
Our Son had same seizures and others, but before a couple months prior to the surgery we decided to take the doctors assistants advice and start giving him Vitamins the kind you find at Target in liquid form for children, we also came to accept of what he had and to adapt to his life style, we also took him away from the place where he was being cared for and they cared for him at our house, we always prayed and had everyone we knew prayed for him as well, he didnt get surgery they stopped

My Daughter has done this a few times , & Ive never heard of absence seizures' so I always thought she was just kind of spacing out or ignoring me , well actually my son will do it too & its out of nowhere . like your video for ex. theyve been playing and have spaced out . My kids are 3.5 and 23 months . How do you even talk to a doctor about something like this ? how was yours daughter diagnosed ?
Just curious, why do you scream her name when she is siezing. I don't think it is effective or helpful and can probably be a bit unnerving. From the outside looking in, it appears to be a bit obnoxious. Seizures are issues with synapses and neurology in the brain. Screaming her name isn't going to help end the seizure. Now that you are ware of what she is doing, have you stopped the name calling behaviour and just let her come thru her episodes without being yelled at?
@jaemarie830-- "screaming her name isn't going to help end the seizure" i don't think you know one thing about epilepsy. i'm 15 years old and have absence seizures myself. when my parents say my name or snap their fingers at me it makes me come back. so i suggest next time you want to state your opinion on a condition that you obviously know nothing about, you should research. because you made yourself sound like a rude p.o.s bye.
Strange, I don't think I had ever had one untill I was diagnosed with Chronic Lyme disease...Now I have them from time to time, a few times a day, Sometimes I find myself at work looking at my computer and I just come back around after a few seconds!
One time i put my bag in the boot of my car, had an absence seizure, then i couldnt remember where i put my bag. I was looking on the floor saying 'mum, wheres my bag?'
These seizures always throw me off. I hate them because they are the most difficult to explain to people. "Well, I just go out of it for a moment, and then I'm back like nothing ever happened." In fact, if it weren't for the short term memory loss, I probably wouldn't notice them much at all.
Question for you- do you notice short-term memory loss in your daughter? It's such a young age (I'm 30) so I wonder if there is any difference in long-term effects.
@choirgrrl im 21, I started having "possible absence seizures" 3 weeks ago. its still not for sure but my dr is going to test me for it. but when i have my episodes i usually get a series of them, the weird thing is i know im having them because i suddenly get a headache and really tired. but ever since i started having them 3 weeks ago i constantly have like the short term memory loss & confusion. but i dont completely lose memory, its just everything is a haze in it. is this like what you had?
this is gonna sound crazy, telling a mother but my wife had the same seizures all her life.shes 23 and her meds dont do much. in 2005 she had 75 seizures and in 2006 100+ seizures... when she started smoking mariwuanna in 2007 her seizures dropped to 20 and last year 10.this year she had 3..NOW im not saying to have ur six year old smoking, but try to find out what medications are made with cannabis..im sure you can get something from overseas, shes adorable i hope she gets better :(
i have heard that too...something about an interruption of the processes of the brain? i guess essentially thats what weed does anyway. i don't exactly remember the science behind it but i have heard of this.
You're wrong shoubash88. She should absolutely publish this. It's national seizure awareness month and people need to realize that conditions such as this should not be hidden away and treated as an embarassement. In fact many people (including myself) believe that seizures are associated with higher intelligence and creativity.
i i swear id be talking to my friend...if my shoes untied ill kneel down to tie it...then out of no where i jus stop and think nothing,i dont hear nothing either...just stare at my shoes after like 5 seconds ill be like WTF?
One more thing. In my case, the epilepsy didn't go away. I am now 30 and have Petit Mal, mostly due to photosensitivity (light flashes and heat). However, my Dr. thinks it could have been avoided, but wasn't because I was given too week medication that I even avoided being an irresponsible girl. Please don't let that happen. Make sure she understands to never deprive herself of good sleep.
I am 36 and have temporal lobe. Diagnosed when I was 5. Sometimes I cry after I have a seizure because it hurts. Your right on the sleep issue. They can be worse if you are tired or emotionally upset (for me anyway). I never found answers as to why I have epilepsy. I hope you do have answers.
My absence seizure started when I was 7 and lasted for only a few yrs. What was odd is that I could hear them calling me, off and on, which makes me think that there are nanoseconds of a conscious state during seizure, but not long enough for me to react, and so I never told my parents that I indeed heard something being ashamed that I didn't answer the calls.
I have a 3 year old daughter who suffers from absence seizures and hers last about 30 - 45 min long and that really scares me do you have any advice for me.
Epileptic seizures are "electrical storms" in the brain, where the neurons fire out of control. These can be located in any functional part of the brain, so not all seizures are the "grand mal" type most people associate with epilepsy. There are absence seizures, emotional seizures, talkative seizures, and even "musical" seizures. These are often misdiagnosed as other medical problems or even as mental illness.
The way she explains them is that it is kind of like a "space out" she is not aware of them when they happen but realizes it afterwards because she knows she missed a few seconds (between 5-30 seconds). She usually snaps back to what she was doing before a few seconds after it is over.
@tamradewbre1822 -- dont take this wrong cause i know its not gonna sound right really i have seen a few of these videos of this kinf of siezure now them other vids the poor kid/kids happen to be wearing a pull up. does she also lose bladder control as well. or is this just random different person different reaction to the siezures?? my son has asbergers syndrome and i have noticed he spaces out once in a while but not untill i watched these did i really pay attention to it.
Thank you for sharing this...I have absence seizures a lot...its good to get a perspective on the other end, so to speak, of what its like to watch the absence seizures occur instead of being the one having them. When we have absence seizures, we barely even realize we had one until its over.
I am a bit curious on how it feels to have such absence... Does it feel like a blackout, or is it like someone made a cut in your life, like in a movie (hard to explain)?
