At 1:18 what muscle does Rippetoe say that is? The one he is pointing to with his finger. It sounds like he said "this is the center" but I'm not sure...

I'm on 120kg at the moment, but I have a cheap bench thats only intended for bench press. I have to get right down and use my back a bit to squat it out of the fucking thing, am I going to do myself damage?
@Murphy4709 if you do heavy lifts from a position like that maybe, heavy for you that is, try to bend your knees and go down further for unracking it instead of bending forward with your back
@aalexcp He basically means that his knees aren't flaring out. You could draw a straight line from the crease of his hips, along his thighs, across his feet. If they were NOT parallel, then his knees would be flaring, and damaging them and the adductors.
He probably meant to say "his thighs are in line with his feet", but he used parallel.
most people find their knees passing toes so that they can go to parallell or beyond. and that's ok as long as you're keeping tension on your hamstrings, so that your knees won't be overloaded, and focus on the hip drive.

@oggleman You could be right. Since I pay less attention to my squats i lean more forward as ussual and now i feel a strange feeling around the disc of my knee's. I also tried to improve my squats by standing wider, could this be a problem for the knees?
@oggleman Absolutely man, simply saying "it is OKay to lean forward" trains and creates a faulty recruitment of muscles and therefore incorrect movement pattern. This is what will lead to the points you alluded to. Plus in all of his videos he nevers mentions deep contraction of the Transverse Abdominus (TVA)...He is just another old school trainer.
@pwt1969 If you squat right you will be deeply contracting your TVA and just about every other muscle in your body, including some that medical science has yet to discover.
Rippetoe is the guy other trainers and coaches go to learn from. He can be a bit rough around the edges, but as others said he knows his stuff. Just because he doesn't look like Arnold in his prime doesn't mean he's dumb on the topic. I doubt Casey Stengel could run to 1st base without falling over in his later years, but as a baseball manager he was one of the best. Often the best atheltic teachers look like the Pillsbury dough boy.

@Condeycon Agreed. Often those that know most about how to "teach" their area of expertise, usually aren't or were not the "best" in that field. Take Jimmy Schmitz for example. His personal bests in Olympic lifts were never really great in terms of record settings. But he is one of the best trainers in Olympic lifts and was the US Olympic team coach three times.
@GarrettP8 I'm not taking away from Rippetoe's achievements as a lifter but my point remains the same. Just because someone doesn't lift doesn't mean they don't know anything about lifting. There are a lot of Olympic athletes who hardly know a thing about the finer points of their respective sports and rely heavily on the knowledge and advice of their less physically adept but more knowledgeable coaches.

The book is called "Startling Strength." Another volume, "Practical Programming for Strength Training," is more advanced, and should be read after SS. Both are excellent examples of applied physiology and exercise science scholarship.
I guess I should have expected a few ignorant responses from the Ripptoe fan club when I commented... Perhaps when you explore some other methods of doing things, you might better understand what I'm talking about...
I've read "Starting Strength." As an athlete, doctor and physiologist, I find it one of the most thoughtful expositions on exercise I have ever read. His citations need work, but that is a quibble. Rip has clearly thought deeply about his subject matter. His book integrates solid anatomy, biophysics, kinesiology, experience and a no-nonsense, safety-first attitude into a comprehensive volume that you simply have to read. Ditto the DVD. Sorry, naysayers--the burden of proof is on you, not Rip.
@sullydawg To the one person who managed a mature response, I have not read his book, so I can only speak on articles I have read and footage seen. I agree his ideas have been thought out, and like I said, for the most part they are valid. However, as a Kinesiologist, Athletic therapist, and studying Physiotherapist, and having competed in national level olympic weight lifting, there is much about what he does that is flawed, but I guess its splitting hairs at this point. I'll agree to disagree.
Like I said, hes not a bad coach, hes just way overrated in my opinion. People who take his course think hes the king because they usually haven’t explored other ways of doing things. There is no one right way to do a squat for everyone, or one right way to do a deadlift or bench or almost any compound exercise. and there is no one perfect program. This is because everyone’s ideal anatomical position is slightly different, and we all start with different strengths and weaknesses
I wouldn’t go as far as to say this guy doesn’t know shit. But he definitely has a few interesting ideas as to how to execute a lot of the major lifts.
Firstly you don’t need to be "The Best" to be a world renown coach, people just have to know who your are. Second, the people he typically teaches are not exactly experts in the field, and those who are experts would rarely take his course, so that contributes to why so many people think he’s so great after following his teachings.

He's not unbelievable strong, he doesn't endorse supplements, doesn't conform to the popular bodybuilding hear-say so the only reason I can think why he would be known is because his methods work and work really well. Why would "experts" (and by this I'm assuming you mean educated AND strong) use a beginner program? Workout to workout progress is not realistic to someone who is benching 300, squatting 400 and pulling 500.

@jt339 When I mentioned the lack of experts in his courses, it was ment to make the exact same point you did. It’smuch easier to look good as a coach with beginners because there is so much of the performance curve left to achieve. Most half decent coaches will look like gods in the first 6 months if you give them a committed beginner.
He has been challenged on many occasions regarding his ideas about how to correctly execute many of the major olympic lifts. For the most part, his ideas are correct. Drive with the hips, power from the glutes, this is all basic. But that’s about as far as his knowledge goes. He is stubborn and set in his ways, and that prevents him from taking a step back to understand how some of his methods can be very damaging on the body in ways that are unnecessary to achieve strength, power, and growth.
Does anyone actually care if their joints hurt if they've increased their squat and deadlift from 115 to 315 for 3x5 and 405x1 respectively in 4-6 months? Most people will never hit those numbers in a lifetime, much less half a year. Take a couple weeks off and use some fish oil. Problem solved. I'm hard pressed to believe you'll find any program that produces results faster for beginners than SS.
@jt339 There are many programs that can match those numbers. Again when you are working with beginners its not hard to make gains if you are dedicated. I have achieved it with many clients, some just this past summer. You dont need anything special. You can do it on a Big3, Push pull, or a bodybuilder 5 day split if you wanted.
And when I was talking about damage to the body I wasnt refferening to a little bit of joint pain. I was talking about the unnessisary potential for long term injury.

I've been working on my squat form for some time now and this video helped ALOT especially the part where he emphasizes the lower back and "ass" haha As soon as i started doing it right i felt it BIG TIME. A lower back pump feels really weird. Squats are amazing.
I've been using the techniques from this video for a few weeks now and have already began to gain strength and flexibility. Squats are becoming one of my favorite exercises now that I am doing them properly. Thanks for posting the videos, I hope to see more soon.
@sonofmyrighthandbjh its a reference point so you can tell depth. if ur looking ahead (usually in a mirror) you cant perceive depth as well. Looking in front of you at the floor gives you better feedback.
@AlderMcGregor I've never seen Dave Camarillo fight inside the cage, but his fighters - Fitch, Koscheck, Swick, and Valaquez are pretty darn good at it. I've never watched Angelo Dundee compete in the ring, but Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Sugar Ray Leonard all did pretty well under his direction. You ever watch Duke coach Mike Kryzewski play basketball? What about Laker's coach Phil Jackson?

Jeezus! Wrong! You're supposed to drive your hips up UNDER your chest/shoulders, not behind them first. Behind them is a Good Morning, not a squat. I don't care if he changes it after, he shouldn't get people in this frame of mind. With some serious weight, this is a good way for someone's ass to come up first, and the bar to go down to the squat supports. A squat is NOT a good morning.
I'll repeat, a good morning's bottom position is what his form is gonna end up putting someone in when trying to use serious weight, their ass in the air, and the bar on the squat supports. Thank you Mr. Rippetoe, this was my missing key to a successful squat! I was wondering why I could not drive out of the bottom, b/c I was lifting my chest first. After watching this, I was able to drive 230 lbs for 10 reps and makes me confident I can go much higher than this and not get stuck at the bottom!
This is probably the most useful video anyone could watch to permanently improve their weightlifting quality and success forever. It's all in your squats and this is exactly how to do it right.
starting strength: basic barbell training ny rippetoe and kilgore. if you only own one weight training book, you could do a lot worse than this masterpiece
@ 1Bers, make sure you are looking slightly up for the entire squat - if you look down you will lean forward. Find something to look at which is slightly above eye level, and look at it for the entire time.
@masinacastle : I'm usually looking at myself in the mirror to make sure I'm going deep enough, so that's a horizontal level. Thanks for your tip, I'll apply it next workout. I'm also considering to change my stiffed leg deadlifts with goodmornings.
Actually, rippetoe advises to find a spot BELOW eye level, about 10 feet in front of you. If that happns to be a wall, then look at a spot on the wall.

I would slow down this motion "the drive" and practice it in front of a mirror, SLOWLY lowering and raising, making sure you're hitting every point of the motion. Your body will adjust and your stabilizer muscles will adapt. Time and patience are needed!

Let's start off with bodybuilding is completely vain and serves no purpose other than to greaten one's own ego. A bunch of guys on stage wearing thongs with spray tan and oil? Give me a break. Secondly, power lifting is better than bodybuilding because it develops the body the way it was supposed to be developed, with compound movements.

you're kneeling instead of squatting and your core isn't active so you're bending over at the waist too far causing your lower back to overcompensate for poor form.
Drinking 1 Gallone of Milk a day plus about 1500-2500 calories by solid food will end up in a lot of size. And not just fat. But since you are doing Squats 3 times a week your body will unleash a big amount of testosterone which will cause your whole body to grow.

@Condeycon Agreed. Often those that know most about how to "teach" their area of expertise, usually aren't or were not the "best" in that field. Take Jimmy Schmitz for example. His personal bests in Olympic lifts were never really great in terms of record settings. But he is one of the best trainers in Olympic lifts and was the US Olympic team coach three times.

@GarrettP8 I'm not taking away from Rippetoe's achievements as a lifter but my point remains the same. Just because someone doesn't lift doesn't mean they don't know anything about lifting. There are a lot of Olympic athletes who hardly know a thing about the finer points of their respective sports and rely heavily on the knowledge and advice of their less physically adept but more knowledgeable coaches.

The book is called "Startling Strength." Another volume, "Practical Programming for Strength Training," is more advanced, and should be read after SS. Both are excellent examples of applied physiology and exercise science scholarship.

I've read "Starting Strength." As an athlete, doctor and physiologist, I find it one of the most thoughtful expositions on exercise I have ever read. His citations need work, but that is a quibble. Rip has clearly thought deeply about his subject matter. His book integrates solid anatomy, biophysics, kinesiology, experience and a no-nonsense, safety-first attitude into a comprehensive volume that you simply have to read. Ditto the DVD. Sorry, naysayers--the burden of proof is on you, not Rip.

@sullydawg To the one person who managed a mature response, I have not read his book, so I can only speak on articles I have read and footage seen. I agree his ideas have been thought out, and like I said, for the most part they are valid. However, as a Kinesiologist, Athletic therapist, and studying Physiotherapist, and having competed in national level olympic weight lifting, there is much about what he does that is flawed, but I guess its splitting hairs at this point. I'll agree to disagree.

Like I said, hes not a bad coach, hes just way overrated in my opinion. People who take his course think hes the king because they usually haven’t explored other ways of doing things. There is no one right way to do a squat for everyone, or one right way to do a deadlift or bench or almost any compound exercise. and there is no one perfect program. This is because everyone’s ideal anatomical position is slightly different, and we all start with different strengths and weaknesses

I wouldn’t go as far as to say this guy doesn’t know shit. But he definitely has a few interesting ideas as to how to execute a lot of the major lifts.
Firstly you don’t need to be "The Best" to be a world renown coach, people just have to know who your are. Second, the people he typically teaches are not exactly experts in the field, and those who are experts would rarely take his course, so that contributes to why so many people think he’s so great after following his teachings.

He's not unbelievable strong, he doesn't endorse supplements, doesn't conform to the popular bodybuilding hear-say so the only reason I can think why he would be known is because his methods work and work really well. Why would "experts" (and by this I'm assuming you mean educated AND strong) use a beginner program? Workout to workout progress is not realistic to someone who is benching 300, squatting 400 and pulling 500.

@jt339 When I mentioned the lack of experts in his courses, it was ment to make the exact same point you did. It’smuch easier to look good as a coach with beginners because there is so much of the performance curve left to achieve. Most half decent coaches will look like gods in the first 6 months if you give them a committed beginner.

He has been challenged on many occasions regarding his ideas about how to correctly execute many of the major olympic lifts. For the most part, his ideas are correct. Drive with the hips, power from the glutes, this is all basic. But that’s about as far as his knowledge goes. He is stubborn and set in his ways, and that prevents him from taking a step back to understand how some of his methods can be very damaging on the body in ways that are unnecessary to achieve strength, power, and growth.

Does anyone actually care if their joints hurt if they've increased their squat and deadlift from 115 to 315 for 3x5 and 405x1 respectively in 4-6 months? Most people will never hit those numbers in a lifetime, much less half a year. Take a couple weeks off and use some fish oil. Problem solved. I'm hard pressed to believe you'll find any program that produces results faster for beginners than SS.

@jt339 There are many programs that can match those numbers. Again when you are working with beginners its not hard to make gains if you are dedicated. I have achieved it with many clients, some just this past summer. You dont need anything special. You can do it on a Big3, Push pull, or a bodybuilder 5 day split if you wanted.
And when I was talking about damage to the body I wasnt refferening to a little bit of joint pain. I was talking about the unnessisary potential for long term injury.

I've been working on my squat form for some time now and this video helped ALOT especially the part where he emphasizes the lower back and "ass" haha As soon as i started doing it right i felt it BIG TIME. A lower back pump feels really weird. Squats are amazing.

@AlderMcGregor I've never seen Dave Camarillo fight inside the cage, but his fighters - Fitch, Koscheck, Swick, and Valaquez are pretty darn good at it. I've never watched Angelo Dundee compete in the ring, but Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Sugar Ray Leonard all did pretty well under his direction. You ever watch Duke coach Mike Kryzewski play basketball? What about Laker's coach Phil Jackson?

Jeezus! Wrong! You're supposed to drive your hips up UNDER your chest/shoulders, not behind them first. Behind them is a Good Morning, not a squat. I don't care if he changes it after, he shouldn't get people in this frame of mind. With some serious weight, this is a good way for someone's ass to come up first, and the bar to go down to the squat supports. A squat is NOT a good morning.

I'll repeat, a good morning's bottom position is what his form is gonna end up putting someone in when trying to use serious weight, their ass in the air, and the bar on the squat supports. Thank you Mr. Rippetoe, this was my missing key to a successful squat! I was wondering why I could not drive out of the bottom, b/c I was lifting my chest first. After watching this, I was able to drive 230 lbs for 10 reps and makes me confident I can go much higher than this and not get stuck at the bottom!

@ 1Bers, make sure you are looking slightly up for the entire squat - if you look down you will lean forward. Find something to look at which is slightly above eye level, and look at it for the entire time.

Actually, rippetoe advises to find a spot BELOW eye level, about 10 feet in front of you. If that happns to be a wall, then look at a spot on the wall.

I would slow down this motion "the drive" and practice it in front of a mirror, SLOWLY lowering and raising, making sure you're hitting every point of the motion. Your body will adjust and your stabilizer muscles will adapt. Time and patience are needed!

He doesn't say there's no need to keep the back straight.
In fact when driving with your hips it's the lower back that gets most of the stress so yes, it has to be kept straight.
You can deadlift more than you can squat normally so if your lower back can handle the weight then you can squat with your hips no problem.

This is a great comment actually, until the phrase "bodybuilding exercises" comes into play. Nothing Mark Rippetoe ever says will explain a bodybuilding exercise. What you're saying is biased and makes no sense at all. Bodybuilding is not only what you're describing. It's an activity like so many others. Ego or not, so what? What's so wrong about that? @MrKuken911 whilst these exercises can and should be used as the basis for any serious bodybuilding routine, that's not their sole purpose. I think "weight lifting" (not the sport), "compound" or "strength" would be a more suitable term.

Drinking 1 Gallone of Milk a day plus about 1500-2500 calories by solid food will end up in a lot of size. And not just fat. But since you are doing Squats 3 times a week your body will unleash a big amount of testosterone which will cause your whole body to grow.
